I had to leave my old fountain in Houston which was a wedding gift, when we moved. :( I really mourned loosing my beloved water feature.

I bought the lady statue in a damaged pile at a fountain and statue making factory. I walked in and asked "do you have a clearance, discard, or damaged, sale area"??? The lady's cost was $20.

Freecycle had an add that said "you move it, you can have it". My hubs and Son went to see why it was being let go. It was full of mud and leaves and the motor was broken. A water feature needs tons of consistant attention and they were busy folks. "one man's trash, pain in the butt fountain, is another man's dream treasured water feature".

We power washed it and stacked it up until we can get a pump.

We bought the concrete table for $20. from Craigslist. The top of the table was used as a platform because the yard is a slope. I'll need to put pots of flowers around it this spring. I did plant a pear tree further back behind it for privacy. Our garden area is teeny, tiny with zero privacy.

We will try and buy a new pump this summer. These concrete pieces are so heavy to move, we want to start out with a brand new one if possible.

That has got to be the best Freecycle find of the year! Congratulations! I hope this eases your sorrow for having to leave the other one. I know it won't replace that one, but it's a nice fill in for sure.

Jan, Yep, I know where that is. We are still getting rain too Jan. Last time I looked a couple hors ago, we were up to 3.7 inches. The good thing is it is a slow constant rain. The sump pump hasn't even had to cut on at all. I guess the thirsty ground is still at least trying to soak it up. Tom, I hope it does get to you. We were in such extremem drought all year last year, and I think we were still about seven or eight inches short of rain this year when this started, so I am grateful. But I have a number of shipments on the way, and more work to do to be ready for them. It's not happening this week though, obviously. kay Kay

This picture is typical of the knockout bush's up here in NE GA. Several business' over in Clarksville (Habersham Co)have huge bush's like this. They use commercial hedge trimmers to keep everything in bounds. I have to admit these look great all spring, summer and fall.

I was not at the auction, but in general these kinds of things seem to go to internet/phone bidders or someone who is clearly representing someone else. So I think a lot of the stratospheric bids come from overseas buyers. I do know someone who is friends with the man who bought the $8M Garvan Carver attributed pie crust table a few years back and he is an American. However, since he didn't want anyone to know he would pay $8M for a table he did it anonymously. I think Rago tends to be pretty accurate with their estimates, so this probably interested a few bidders for whom money is essentially no object. I don't tend to follow the decorative objects market much, however, I was told that it remained stronger than the furniture market, because the decorative arts are more "portable" and more liquid in terms of ease of resale than furniture.

It is a wonderful room, but one that definitely has its own mind. You've already followed the main advice usually given, though, to live with it for a while. :) As for starting, first off are there any problems decorating needs to address? Is that view of your own property or is privacy an issue? How about hot sun some time of the day or year? How about what you really like about the room and want to play up? Should the windows be left just as they are because they work well and you love them? Regarding making it feel more cozy, built-ins, and/or something else, such as darker or lighter paint on the lower walls to an appropriate "ceiling" height, are often used to pull visual focus down to living level and make it feel more cozy. Simply putting all art and furniture below and to that level and basically leaving the upper reaches to simply add airiness without dominating is also used. Running the focus up high with wall sculpture and so on can be very dramatic, but it's very, very seldom cozy. Also, having important foci too high to serve their purpose for people sitting in the room can be less than desirable. I'm not sure this is a room for built-ins because of your window placements very close to places where they could be built in, the various important horizontal levels to be integrated, and the shallowness of the fireplace. If you did that, they all suggest to me that a professional designer should be involved. Those long window lines and the bottoms of the vertical windows would definitely dictate where any additional horizontal lines would have to go. The fireplace mantle need not be considered because it could move up or down to fit. (In fact, I keep imagining it simplified without a mantle and stone at all.) Without a decorator involved, though, I think I'd start simply decorating the lower room, choosing an imaginary "ceiling" height line for both sides of the fireplace (roughly defined by one of the window lines) and not hanging anything at all above that, just letting the windows be the events. The entire height of the wall the TV's currently on might be potentially available, though. Maybe a long, elegantly simple storage unit sofa or sideboard height for that wall, TV and art above it, sculpture, lamp, snacks for guests on it, etc. Since the room's not wide and there are already many horizontal lines, I'm imagining that piece in a light value so that it would settle back and let the focus go to what's on it and the wall behind. Hope either a hmmm, or a no way! kick off some ideas. :)

Even without the water this is awesome. I can see it planted. Or filled with greens and Christmas ornaments next year. How about grass and Easter eggs, and a few ceramic bunnies, in just a few short months.
I'm so jealous.

Beautiful. I am doing something similar with my cherubs and lots of geraniums.They seem to thrive in those concrete urns and fountains. I have ponds a creek and a waterfall so I really didnt want another water feature but I find them charming

Marlene, My son and my husband had a rough time picking it up into the truck. When just Hubs and I went to unload it we parked on an incline. I sprayed PAM on the truck bed because we could not get it to budge. Hubs sat down behind it and pushed it with his legs. Then pulled it down onto a dolly. Remember to give your husbands a can of Pam for the tool box. LOL

I have seen some pretty amazing stuff on Freecycle. I think some people are so grateful to get rid of something they are willing to part with it for free. I've seen trees, shrubs, bricks, lumber, day lilies ... all kinds of ads with you move it and you can have it. But I have to admit, I think yours is the most amazing! I'm sure it probably looked a lot worse before you cleaned it up but it sure turned out to be a beauty! It looks like you have picked a very pretty spot for it too. I can't wait to see it with water in it! Great find!

Check the thrift stores and yard sales, that's where I find pumps for fountains. My husband had a pump he used to make his old hand pump water fountain, and I think it was something like $30. I cut it in two with the weedeater. Luckily, when I went to Goodwill, I found a water feature for a few dollars that had a better quality pump. So now I buy the fountains when I see them for a dollar or two. I'm sure you can find one heavy duty enough to run that gorgeous fountain!

I'm Jealous too!!! WOW!!! What an AWESOME score!!! I just recieved my new subscription of our local Gardens West magazine, and now I Hate the snow and want it to go away, lol, and am thinking of hauling in my cement bird bath I got for Mother's Day from DD, and mosaic it. Here is an old bird bath I paid $20 for at a garage sale and fell in love with, it has a real Art Deco feel about it.

I have never mosaiced anything (just common grouting). When I see you mosaic artists I am MORE THAN IMPRESSED!!!! I just hope someday I will get enough courage to learn that art form. That fountain could be a true work of art if I just had 1 teaspoon of your talent! I believe the time must come when I try doing a step stone. I recently got all of the left overs from a lady who made step stones. Mold, concrete dyes in multiple colors, concrete conditioner, colored grouts etc. etc. No tiles though. (FREECYCLE!!!!) So I have been collecting slowly to begin such an endeavor. But instead of creating art KIRK has me writing Country Songs on the Conversation Side!!!! Ha Ha Ya got'a love this Forum.
