I know there are better ones out there, but they aren't sold locally here as far as I can see. This is why many of us make lists of roses, research them, and then order them over the internet or via phone. There are hundreds of rose varieties available. You do not have to limit yourself to what is available locally. There are better roses and better rootstocks (a new topic, do a search on the Roses Forum first) than those that are sold locally. Unless you want a R. rugosa, R. rugosa alba, or Hansa, we have a lot of those sold in my area, they are on their own roots.

Hello I live in Ontario, Canada and I bought a blazing rose last year. I heard lots of negative comments regarding this one in how it doesn't survive a winter here. But what has me confused is that on the tag it says it was grown in Canada. I covered it up with burlap and expected it to have not survived the winter. Well was I in for a surprise when I got around to finally removing the burlap as greeting me were green leaves galore on it. However the trellis I got is for the birds as you have to add on to it as it is only so high and last year the rose grew to the top of the fence. I would like to get another trellis like the rake type but I can't take it on the bus as I only take public transit. Will check and see if there is any way I can get one of the stores to perhaps deliver it to our senior building or get somebody to take me to the garden centre. I would ask the fellah but he has gone away with his wife to Niagara Falls for two days. Soooo how does one rate this one? What is the best climbing one for continuous blooming that I can buy here?

I had a climbing Blaze rose for years. It only blooms on new growth, so you'll have to cover it in the winter in zone 5. Otherwise all growth will die from winter kill and only what's under the snow at the base will survive - so no blooms. I used to take the branches down and curl them on the ground then cover with burlap, anchor with rocks. I then piled all the cutback from the fall garden on top of that and they did fine. In the spring I'd uncover them and put them back up. That way they bloomed every year. However, if left up all winter, all branches died back and there was never any blooms. There are a few clmbing roses that are hardy enough to survive and bloom in zone 5 without being covered up, though.

I had a red blaze that looked practically dried up when my Mom purchased it on sale at Wal-mart in late spring and gave to me. I planted it with some good amended soil and gave it just some reasonable care. By summers end, it had climbed the deck railing and bloomed as if it were the healthiest rose in the nursery and wintered West Virginia highland winter without so much as additional mulching. It had no bug or disease problems and was beautiful. My Mom had one for years that got very little care after my Dad passed away and it just kept growing and producing. Great rose.
