Planting a Climbing Blaze and Neem Oil

I am planning to plant a blaze climber up against the back of my house (facing south). Am I doing the right thing or am I asking for trouble. I usually have good luck with my roses through the winter (I mound the soil and cover with xmas tree boughs) but I worry about black spot. Also, has anyone ever heard of using Neem oil as a preventative measure for BS. Thanks for any info.

Neem oil seems to work on just about everything. I have tried it and compared it to just baby oil and water - both work just as well for sucking insects.

I'm also in zone 5 and have had no luck keeping Blaze from winter kill. Since it blooms only on last year's growth, this was a problem. The only way I could get it to bloom was to take the branches down in the late fall and cover them, then put them back up in the spring. That worked. maybe you'll have better luck with it against the house.

Yes, the grasshoppers are frustrating to say the least, especially when we see vast numbers of them, and our plants being shredded. Well, if you do decide to use Neem Oil, please pay careful heed to the warnings Dawn has already given, about not spraying in temps above 85 degrees to be on the safe side. Also, weigh the pros and cons about killing off other bad bugs which then may starve out the beneficial predator insects that eat them. I think the general idea is to study options and try to achieve a balance that we and our plants as well as the beneficials can live with. I've used the Neem Oil spray "lightly" at first mixed with dissolved hand soap to form an emulsion, as directed. And then I sprayed at night when it was cooler, and during the brief season of cool weather after our recent rain. All I know is that I do see new "lively" hoppers which apparently have migrated in from other areas, (like the neighbors vacant land, etc), but overall, I'm seeing WAY less numbers of hoppers, as well as a lot of sick, messed up one's that look like they're about to kick the bucket. Good riddance! I hate the ugly things! I'm also going to try Neem as a soil drench for root knot nematodes, and then plant Elbon rye this fall where I've noticed them. Companies that sell Neem claim the Neem can be used successfully for that purpose. Good luck with your citrus :) Barbara

Sorry but I don't see any insect damage. Insects will leave holes or distorted foliage or skeletonized foliage and I just see brown spots :-) Brown spots are not a common sign of any insect problem. To be honest, to me these look physiological rather than pathogenic - caused by mechanical damage rather than a disease. And a bit too random to be a disease as well. Mechanical damage can be caused at the nursery or during transport, when planting or even by the weather. Regardless, it is not anything I would be overly concerned about.

Flowers, Thank you for telling me more about your Eden-she is the queen if Edens to me w/ her abundant blooms! Ben, Your Eden is the King of Edens!!!!) Just can’t believe it’s tall climbibg beauty! Oh, My, WOW! Flowers, Your Eden sounds soectacular!!!! I think Eden us the best! It’s blooms, each one, have the most beautiful shape & pircelain colored light punk, and she’s so vigorous! Yous blooming all the time is nagical-I can’t wait to see if mine will bloom that much….. I think the more sun, more watering, fertile conditions would bring her out to be her best after 4 years hoping. However, Heirloom Rises said their Eden now has huge almost tree sized HUGE trunks- canes are soooooo wide. I see my Eden’s canes thickening -but don’t want big tree sized trunks!!! Lol! I think I’ll let her griw around tge side of my baywidiw to reach 12 feet or so to get max blooms! My Eden on other side of bay window is just starting to fill out, but littkexshaded….. may move vegetation aroundcto give her more sun so she can thrive.

There are some pests that feed off roots so ck for that. You could check the roots for root rot but that usually causes the leaves to be wilted 24/7, even after you water. Since you did not mention that the leaves were wilting, I do not expect that to be a problem but feel free to check to see if they appear rotted. To get root rot, you would need to be watering often, watering a lot and-or have soil that does not drain well, that is, you typically need a soil that stays wet for very long periods of time. If you have sandy soil, you could water daily and not have root rot because the water would drain very well and the soil would not stay wet for long periods of time. An example of watering amounts normal in the Summer would be to water 1.5 gallons of water per shrub when the soil feels almost dry or dry to a depth of 4".

Keeping Blaze happy in Z5 is tough. Unless you have some form of protection for the canes, like burying, expect to lose most of the cane to winterkill, making it a short plant to start off the spring.
In a good location in Z6...ahhhh!!...that's a different story!

I am in Zone 5 and have had Blaze for quite a few years. Have mine againt the house and used to wrap it and pull it down to the soil, then lay something on it to keep it down. It never got much winterkill. Actually had over 100 blooms on it one year. It finally cracked off at the base as it got older thu to being pulled down.
I replaced it with improved blaze which I also pulled down but not as far last fall and laid a short but long wooden gate in front of it. Mine didn't get very much winterkill last winter either. Think being planted against the house is a big plus for it.

I use Neem Oil on my blaze every couple of weeks without fail because it is muggy in my zone 7. I have beautiful growth, but no blooms yet as this is its' first year. Looking forward to future spring and summer blooms....
