Roses For Alabama -- Yellow? Red?

A cousin in Alabama would like to plant a yellow rose, in a large container on her patio.

I'm trying to find something for her that would not need spraying, because she has some health problems.

In Southern California, my hands-down recommendation would be Julia Child, but I have concerns that she might have blackspot problems in AL.

So, any suggestions?

She said she once had a lovely red HT, good for cutting, and disease-free for her. It was lost to a storm, and she would like a replacement -- but there again I have a concern that what is disease-resistant here in SoCal may not be what works for her.

Any suggestions?

Jeri, doesn't this seem like the ideal occasion to see if the first non-spray AARS rose winner, Sunshine Daydream, really lives up to it's billing?

Well, no.

The lady has some health problems just now. She really needs something pretty to look at, and doesn't need to be an experimenter. :-) EYE might do that -- but I wouldn't suggest it to her.

I'm looking for something that is known to grow well, with minimal disease and hassle, in Southern AL.

Rev d'Or did very well in Earthkind trials for Texas gardens, so may do well for you, too. I like a modern red climber in my garden - Dublin Bay. It reblooms well - no fragrance, though. It can definitely take the heat. Anita

Pernet-Ducher introduced Soleil d'Or in 1900 and was a seedling of Antoine Ducher, a HP. Rosa Hugonis was introduced in 1899, but not widely grown until later. There are several yellow tea roses, noisette hybrids and a few china hybrids like Perle d'Or. The yellow in these roses probalby originates from Parks' Yellow Tea-scented China introduced brought to UK in 1824. About the same time Rosa banksiae lutea was introduced in UK too, but it hasn't had any influence in rose hybridising. I think there are one or two rare mentionings in old books about a yellow portland and simillar, but nobody really knows anything for shore about these, and they are lost varieties.

Your member info and your sign in does not give your zone and location. I just figgured you were not in the deep south somewhere. You might want to add your zone, its very helpful when asking quastions on the forums. Mark the canes blooming red by tying a ribbon around them or something like that. After you have identified all the red canes (and I am assuming that there are still yellow of the original rose left) then follow them back to were they emerage from the rootstock which requires some digging. Then litterally rip off the red canes. If you cut them, they just grow back. If that one rose shrub is now blooming ALL red with none of the yellow rose left then forget all this, your yellow rose is dead and all you have is rootstock, just dig it up and buy a new one. I can tell you that it is so rare for the rootstock to grow if the rose graft is buried afew inches and there are canes of the original rose left that the odds are greater of winning the lottery than this happening.

Hey Kate, I finally SP'd Ketchup & Mustard this year. I know others really like this one, but I was not a fan. Harsh coloring just didn't seem to go with its bloom form, and it was a BS magnet here in the land of heat & humidity. George Burns is my only other red/yellow combo. It took a couple of years in my garden for George to grow on me, but I am rather fond of him now. He's grown into a profuse bloomer; blooms last a long time on the bush; he stays rather short, but full; average disease resistance here...not the best or the worst for BS (but I do spray him here and there). GB didn't seem to have much fragrance to me when he was young, but that has improved over time...still not what I would describe as strong, though. In cool weather, the yellow is much more pronounced, but still fades to mostly red/white over time. Warning...he is armed with big thorns...one of my thorniest roses. My climate, and humidity, are maybe similar to Ala., and I grow Julia Child.. 3 of them... and I don't spray.. they get minimal, occasional - BS, but not enough to defoliate, and they seem to stay a nice 2 1/2 - 3 feet....I love JC....sally

I did a search on HMF for Alabama gardens. A couple of them listed multiple yellow roses. Whether they spray them or not I don't know, but you could ask.

The Nancy above grows Sunsprite. A friend of mine in Arkansas (blackspot finds her area to be a paradise!) is always hunting for blackspot resistant yellows. She sprays (with Neem only) some of her roses and others not at all. I think she told me she grows Sunsprite, but I don't remember whether it needs any spraying. She was about to get Happy Child from Kaye Kettrey (also in Arkansas, has a large rose garden, and is favorite among rose enthusiasts in the area), who although in Arkansas, might know a fair amount about blackspot resistant roses in the South.

My experience with Julia Child is much like Sally's. I have terrible black spot problems here but Julia has good resistance, stays compact, is winter hardy and blooms a ton!

I wouldn't recommend Sunsprite. I got rid of mine because the bloom don't hold at all, from bud to blown in half a day and it did spot for me.

well i would certainly recommend a bannana rose ,as quite obviosly the best choice.

Sunflare was very clean in a garden fairly near my spotty conditions. And they were not surrounded by spotless roses.
