My son has a severe peanut allergy and I I have never come across this specific subject. Three things to consider: 1) Most people's food allergies are only to INGESTING the protein they are allergic to. Is he still so young he would be licking the floor? 2)Does he have asthma? It is extremely rare that an allergic reaction occurs in the lungs, but having diagnosed asthma increases the chance this can happen by breathing in proteins. 3) Being allergic to peanuts does not mean you are anaphylactic to nuts, and tung oil comes from a nut and maybe even a seed, both of which are not a peanut nor a legume. If your grandson is allergic to peanuts and not consuming nuts it is because of cross contamination: most nut shelling companies also shell peanuts on the same line, mixing up the proteins. This would not be an issue with tung oil as it is probably so over-processed, any proteins would be cooked away, and it is not a peanut! If it was my non-asthmatic, only peanut allergic grandson, I would keep him away for 30 days after applying the tung-oil, then not worry about it at all. You are being a super grandparent worrying about this!!!!!!!!!

Now then back to my problem... The natural peanut butter I buy has at least two tablespoons of oil floating on the top... If I mix it all in the peanut butter it is way too runny, it actually runs out of the sandwich... I only pour off the top layer of oil, there's still an oil slick on top of the peanut butter that I do mix in, and it's more than enough oil to keep it gooey... ( I do not put peanut butter in the FRIDGE [ lol ] ) There for a while we were going through a jar a week and I now have a quart of oil... For the record the peanut butter 'solids/juice' kinda sinks to the bottom of each layer of oil... So I'm guessing that if I let it all come to room temperature all the peanut butter will sink to the bottom of the jar and if I'm very careful I might be able to pour off the oil for frying and not start a fire... I just thought someone here might know... Oh well, if you don't hear from me you know I set the kitchen on fire... lol Rita

Ok, here's a pic so you'll know what I'm talking about... I didn't notice that they were two different colors before, hmmm... Anyway, the jar on the right is the oldest and the jar on the left shows the difference... All the oil came from Meijers Natural Peanut Butter, over the last few months, and both jars have been kept in the refrigerator.... Linda C, the temperature in the fridge is 35 degrees, unless hubby is standing in front of it with the door open ( lol ).... As for the consistency, with this brand if you leave all the oil in the jar the peanut butter is just too runny, it actually leaks out of your sandwich, even if you keep it in the fridge and I usually keep it in the cabinet... Terri, you're right, sorta, saturated fat will solidify but so will any oil that's been hydrogenated... I guess I should have mentioned in my original post that I'm concerned about which oil I'm actually getting... Just seems odd to me that if it's all peanut oil why hasn't the oil from the last two jars solidified... Rita

Before you do anything, it would be a good idea to test your thermometer--if it's off, that could be your problem. However, you cannot use oil forever. It may be time to get some fresh oil.
