Tung oil finish ok with peanut allergy???

Help please...our grandson has a peanut allergy. We were planning to use pure tung oil to finish our walnut and reclaimed oak flooring but need to know if it will adversely affect our grandson. Any ideas or where I can get definitive answers?

Ask your children to ask his allergist or pediatrician.

Tung oil comes from a nut ... but I don't think it's in the same plant family as peanuts

Perhaps it might say something on the can? We used Waterlox and it mentioned on the can that people with severe peanut allergies might react until it had cured. I don't have the can in front of me, but I believe it (or someone else) said it took 30 days to cure.

I would definitely do some more research to be sure.

My friend's son had severe peanut allergies and we didn't let him come over to our house for a while after we did the floors. He did eventually come over months later and was fine.

Thanks to everyone here for all the great advise! Here's a company called Woodworker's Supply (woodworkers.com) website I found to purchase three types food-safe finishes. I also checked the John Boos Company which manufactures both residential and commercial butcher block and wood countertops and cutting boards for prices on their Mystery Oil and Boos Cream which combines mineral oil and beeswax, which is rather expensive, but the website has a lot of helpful information in their FAQ section. First off, Minwax Tung Oil Finish is a varnish thinned for wiping and some linseed oil. There is no tung oil in it, none, zero, zip, nada, just varnish, linseed oil, and thinner. Tung Oil Finish For simple cleaning, I use Dawn in water, less Dawn than what you would use for a sink full of dishes. It is an excellent degreaser. If you want to (and I rarely find it necessary), you can then wipe down with naphtha or mineral spirits. The varnish and oil by now has polymerized and will NOT be stripped by mineral spirits. Its curing is non-reversible. For heavy cleaning of accumulated grease, smoke, and fingerprints, I use Kitchen Cabinet wipes (See below). In a kitchen full of cabinets, usually only the most-used two or three cabinets need this treatment. You might then follow up with a good emulsion furniture polish such as Oz or Guardsman. Danish oil is not a specific product, but a mixture of oil,resins, varnish, driers, solvents, etc. It varies according to the manufacturer and usually contains either tung oil or linseed oil, depending on who made it. Tung oil is the oil of a chinese nut. What is sold as tung oil may also be a mixture, with driers, etc. unless it is labelled "pure tung oil." Linseed oil, which is made from flax seeds, darkens more than tung oil and does not dry as hard. I expect this all just adds to the confusion, but if your danish oil is tung oil based, and the sample looks the same, it will probably age the same way as the finish on your crib.

I was actually reading an article the other day saying that no wood finish has actually been officially FDA approved as food safe. However they're all generally considered safe lacking evidence to the contrary. Anyway, here's what Flexner says about the food-safety of driers (and presumably this applies to mineral spirits as well). "Salad-bowl finish is simply a wiping varnish. The implication in the name is that it is safe for contact with food and for small children who might chew on the finished wood. It is safe of course, once it has cured, but so are all the other available varnishes and wiping varnishes. The safety concern is the metallic driers used to speed the drying of the finish. Lead was once used and it isnÂt safe. But lead isnÂt used anymore. It takes several driers to replace the lead, and there are only a few driers available. So all varnishes use essentially the same driers. There is no difference in the safety factor of any of these driers. All are safe. ItÂs amazing to me how the food-safe myth continues to be repeated in woodworking circles. (And more amazing still that salad-bowl finish is considered safe while the other wiping varnishes arenÂt!) Food safety is a non-issue. All finishes currently available to woodworkers are safe to eat off of or chew on once the finish has fully cured. Curing occurs faster the thinner the film and the warmer the surrounding air. Press your nose up against the hardened finish and take a whiff. If you can smell anything, the finish isnÂt cured. My son has a severe peanut allergy and I I have never come across this specific subject. Three things to consider:
1) Most people's food allergies are only to INGESTING the protein they are allergic to. Is he still so young he would be licking the floor?
2)Does he have asthma? It is extremely rare that an allergic reaction occurs in the lungs, but having diagnosed asthma increases the chance this can happen by breathing in proteins.
3) Being allergic to peanuts does not mean you are anaphylactic to nuts, and tung oil comes from a nut and maybe even a seed, both of which are not a peanut nor a legume. If your grandson is allergic to peanuts and not consuming nuts it is because of cross contamination: most nut shelling companies also shell peanuts on the same line, mixing up the proteins. This would not be an issue with tung oil as it is probably so over-processed, any proteins would be cooked away, and it is not a peanut!
If it was my non-asthmatic, only peanut allergic grandson, I would keep him away for 30 days after applying the tung-oil, then not worry about it at all. You are being a super grandparent worrying about this!!!!!!!!!
