Really tired of deadheading...any annuals you don't have to?
Comments (15)If there were no deadheading needed, I probably wouldn't be as interested in the plant! I love to fuss, and pull off dried/yellowing leaves, and dead head. That's my time (in addition to the watering and weeding) to spend unwinding from the day, for me it's like therapy. But on the other hand it can be time consuming if there's too much of it to do (and I get real cranky when I see the need to clean up my containers/garden but don't have the time). This year I grew a sweet little plant called gypsophilia (miniature baby's breath), and only periodically ran my hands over the mound to shake out the seed and bugs (aphids, although it didn't appear the bugs slowed the plants at all). Then I got to them a day late with the watering can and they looked a bit fried, so I took my scissors and sheared them back by half, fertilized and was faithful to future waterings and within 10 days they were well on their way to being covered with little pinky/purple flowers again. Another colorful addition to your containers that need little care and are not bothered by any bugs (in my zone 3 area anyway) is coleus. Such an array of designs and colours, and the colour is there right away when you plant. On the seed grown ones you would need to periodically pinch off their flower spikes, but the work involved is minimal compared to deadheading petunias! ~ k ~...See MoreAny geraniums doing well where summers are hot?
Comments (12)Nimbus is definitely more heat tolerant than most other purple geraniums, and it is an outstanding long bloomer. I also distinctly recall a Gardener's Journal or Diary program with Tony Avent at plant delights in which he said that Brookside was one of the most heat tolerant geraniums and is one of the few that they can grow and sell as a result. I recall that the TV clips of Brookside in their garden looked very good. Montrose Nursery in NC has been long closed now, but when it was around, Nancy Goodwin sold quite a few different forms of G. pratense, and I remember her saying that it was a good performer in the gardens there. And that is central NC, CHapel Hill area, so I bet it is just as hot if not worse than MO. G. pratense is little known to most American gardeners except for 'Splish Splash' (really 'Striatum'), but there are many good garden plants in a range of colors from rich purple to lavendar to light pink to white, easily growable from seed -- you just have to look for them. Here is a picture from my old garden of forms of G. pratense in early June Among forms of G. x oxonianum, 'Pearl Bolund' seems unfazed by heat and is one of the best performing, longest blooming forms you can get....See MoreAny late summer blooming North American Natives?
Comments (6)Hi Smives, where did you get the list? I need more sources before I just plant redbuds and dogwoods the rest of my life. Thanks for giving me some domestic choices. Hamamelis virginiana - witch hazel blooms in the winter here if I recall. Perhaps I actually need one because of that. Thanks for bringing it up. Anyone know if any of the cultivars bloom in July or August? Aesculus parviflora & Cephalanthus occidentalis are more bushes to me but that is too fine a line to cross them off. Perhaps I can prune a parviflora into a vase shape. Cotinus obovatus is on my list for this spring. Does it bloom later up north? I am expecting spring flowers out of it and that EXCELLENT fall color. There must be cultivars I just know nothing about. Rhus typhina! I am actually growing two which are turning into a half dozen. They're different. Totally forgot that someday they might flower with all that suckering going on. Thanks. Aralia spinosa, Devils Walkingstick fits perfectly. Does Franklinia alatamaha bloom most of the summer? I have been considering trying one for some time. Another good choice. Oxydendrum arboreum, Sourwood. After killing a couple I must have blocked it from memory. Gordonia lasianthus just isn't cold hardy here. Magnolia virginiana, Sweetbay Magnolia totally counts. I just don't like it....See MoreWhat Blooms All Summer?
Comments (12)woody ga melampodium is gorgeuos. I wish I could find some this year. I bought a six pack at the grower's outlet last year for $1 at my daughter's insistence (she is only 5 and seems to have a knack for picking winners) anyway they got so nice and full they were the highlight of a new bed last year, but I din't try and collect any seeds. nosyrosie, New Guinea impatiens can not take full sun regardless of what some of the tags may say, they can just take more sun than regular impatiens. I am not sure but I believe Sunpatiens are a hybrid of the new Guinea, anyone know for sure?...See Moredeeje
