What Blooms All Summer?

For almost full sun - 6 hours a day, bright light after that. Would prefer something not over 18 inches tall, if that's possible. Any color. Thanks.

Hardy Iceplant

Certain annuals go most of the summer: melampodium [truly nonstop and don't have to be deadheaded], zinnias, marigolds, salvia fariceanea, common red salvia (I don't like this but my hummingbird watching friend swears by it), nasturtiums, and gomphrena, the little purple pom pom flowers.

I also have Splish Splash and for me it got about 2.5 ft tall bloom spikes on it this year, but the foliage stayed lower at about 1 ft and the leaves were the biggest of any geranium variety I own. It is done blooming now, so I cut down the taller blooming parts and it is back to a mound of leaves on long stems. It was really pretty in bloom, and even found it's way to mixing with a "Butterfly" Japanese Maple I have it planted under. The two colors on the geranium flower looked pretty against the soft pink/green/cream of the maple leaves. I also have 3 Rozannes and LOVE them. One is in full sun and is smothered with flowers most all of the summer, and the other two are in part shade and I bought them specifically to be filler plants. They are performing just as beautifully as I hoped. One is planted at the base of a Jackmanii clematis on a pillar, and it is reaching up to play with the dark purple blooms of the clematis, and it really compliments the Digitalis and Echinacea plants next to it as well. The third is planted at the base of a birch tree and currently mingling with a small section of herbs in a sunnier edge of one bed, and it is also filling space next to a Stained Glass Hosta, a clematis climbing up the birch, and some shade plants tucked into the center portion of the bed. I can't say enough good things about Rozanne ! I have a bunch of other perennial geraniums and I feel that this genus really is a workhorse in the garden and would not be without them. The groundcover varieties are perfect for the front edge of beds, gently spilling over onto pathways. I have also tried with the Bikovo types to pull off a chunk and re-plant. Yes, it does work very well, if you get some roots. The new plant will sulk the first year but be back to new next spring. As far as Rozanne is concerned, I don't think I would try to split her. It looks like most stems come from a single point/crown, unlike the spreading Bikovo types, so if you try to slice through the center, it would probably damage the plant too much. They are usually available locally, so if I want another one, I'd rather buy a nice sized established plant. They are well worth the $$ in my garden.

Want tall white blooms all summer....need a mid summering flower

Wow, I've been busy googling---who knew there were so many to choose from! You all gave me so many more choices than I found on my own when I did searches for "tall white perennials" :) Campanula, I love the foxglove idea.... When does it bloom and for how long? Also, the Penstemon is very pretty---I have never seen it before! I definitely need something bold there--- So far I think phlox, digitalis, and penstemon are my best bets. Even the obedient plant wasn't showy enough to be seen from the street---I need a big 'ol white flower. The lilies would work too... but I'm not a huge fan. As far as a picture, I never took one when the obedient plant was blooming! It was pretty, but didn't quite give the 'pop' that the allium did.... which is what prompted a new search :) Thanks so much for all of your help---lots to think about

You have the species variety of daylily, often referred to as "ditch lilies". They will rarely re-bloom. Many of the hybrid daylilies will rebloom through-out the summer. I have had some rebloom scapes that were killed by the first hard freeze in the week of December.

I remember my grandmother had a similar driveway in Southern California when I was a kid. Ahh... was that ever nice. I think a lot depends on the type of rose bush. Some bloom repeatedly, some have only one or two flushes a year -- but may be worth it anyway. I have a floribunda that has a few flowers all the time, but has one flush in the spring where it is completely covered with roses. My David Austin and my rugosa roses seeem to have a fair number of flowers all the time. The big concern around here is not crowding the plants too closely. It gets so humid in the summer that blackspot is a real problem -- and seems to leap from plants. Good luck with your roses -- it's a wonderful idea!

Wax begonias (the kind you can get in a 6-pack at the nursery) bloom all summer & don't need to be dead-headed.

I have been looking for the sunpatiens but have only seen them in magazines.

Oxalis has bright pink flowers that bloom longer than anything I can think of.

I saw sunpatiens at Home Depot last week. I don't know if this is the same thing but there's another type of sun impatiens, I think called New Guinea impatiens? I love when they have reddish foliage and lipstick orange and coral blooms - they're beautiful.

I think I have decided on hyssop. They made the UGA gold medal list a couple of years ago, and some of them don't get much taller than 18 inches. Has anyone grown hyssop? Does it really bloom from June to October? Will I need to add granite dust to the planting bed to give them enough drainage? Does anyone know where to get it locally? So far the closest place I have found is a nursery in Virginia.

I can give you some hyssop, but what I have is not a cultivar, so it generally gets about 24 inches. Mine is the purple one; I have heard the white one is very special.

I just plant it in regular dirt, nothing special. Get a few seedlings a year; took two to the GNPS sale and I see a couple more have popped up since then.

I love vincas and zinnias for non-stop color, especially the narrow leaf zinnias.

I winter sowed melampodium and I have high hopes for it. I hope it looks as good as I've heard it does.

I winter sowed hardy Iceplant but it didn't do well. I don't know what I did wrong.

I am delighted though that hyssop will grow in the south (I am not quite there yet).

woody ga melampodium is gorgeuos. I wish I could find some this year. I bought a six pack at the grower's outlet last year for $1 at my daughter's insistence (she is only 5 and seems to have a knack for picking winners) anyway they got so nice and full they were the highlight of a new bed last year, but I din't try and collect any seeds.

nosyrosie, New Guinea impatiens can not take full sun regardless of what some of the tags may say, they can just take more sun than regular impatiens. I am not sure but I believe Sunpatiens are a hybrid of the new Guinea, anyone know for sure?
