Eh, this global warming is getting us all! :-)

We have plenty of days in the mid-upper-90s as well, and I've not had a problem with any geraniums pooping out on me. I worry more about the winter cold -- like today's! -- than summer heat taking its toll on geraniums.

But in my garden it's Rozanne that just kept going and going last summer. I just mulch it really well for the winter, and she blooms like crazy all summer into the fall.

'Course, there's a lot of other factors besides air temperature. I hope there's someone closer to your area who can chime in with their experiences!

New Hampshire Purple blooms most of the summer here, well into fall. It's like a little blooming machine. We have plenty of 90+ degree days, and horrible humidity too.

This link has the picture I found closest to the way mine looks. It's a geranium with a very neat habit, by the way - forms a nice round mound.

I have the same question and think I will try Rozanne this year.

I have one I raised from seed, a spotted variety called Freckles and Nimbus. Neither were spectacular for me. They may be like delphiniums in our area.......very difficult. Let me know what you end up with and how they do.

I second the New Hampshire Purple recommendation. It's a cultivar of G. sanguineum.

I've grown a stand of Geranium Boikova for many years. White blooms and short attractive foliage that doesn't melt out in our heat.

This is probably out of place, but I love the old fashioned geranium that came from my Mother.

They are RED, get quite tall, grow like weeds, and are very dependable, even in our very hot summers. I am not saying they bloom non-stop in summer, but they do bloom nicely. Right now, they are gorgeous!

I have some of the new varieties in pots and hanging baskets, they do not fare nearly so well as the old ones.

Deeje - That's hardly fair that you have to suffer through both temperature extremes. Tiny monster looks like a pretty color.

I should have also asked if the heat just reduces the bloom time or kills the plant entirely. I assumed it just reduces blooming. I wonder if some afternoon/evening shade would help them bloom longer.
GLD - I don't even try to grow delphiniums here. I've discovered that tiarella doesn't like the heat either. Mine died.
Maryl - I have Biokovo too and agree that it's a tough plant. Mine is in an out-of-the-way spot and I forget to water it in the summer. It's managed to survive my neglect so it gets my approval. Are the flowers sort of dirty white though? They seem like they are to me and pretty sparse but as I said, it's been neglected, so maybe it could look better. It doesn't get any shade at all from sun-up to sun-down. The only other geranium I have is a wild one that's in my shade garden and it hasn't done much yet.

No kidding Christi on the Tiarella. I had better luck with the Heucherella (Bridgets Bloom), but only because it took 3 years to melt out instead of two. My most intense efforts are spent on my roses, so other plants have to be pretty survival orientated to compete with my attention during our long hot/humid summers. That's why I like Boikovo so much. It has a touch of pink in the blooms, but outside of that I'd say they are a pretty clean white. Bloom has been somewhat reduced by a tree growing up and shading them more, but still it's pretty good even now. Outside of deadheading and watering I don't do a thing to them.

Though not an expert about hot climates I would suggest to try Geranium riversleianum varieties (Russel Pritchard and Mavis Simpson). They are among the longest bloomers here, and the hotter the summer, the better they behave...

I think the trick is to place them in a partial shade site with constant moisture. I have Biokovo, Biokovo Karmina, Nimbus, G. sanguineum v. striatum, and Rozanne. G. sanguineum is reputedly the most heat tolerant and can also tolerate shade and drought. Mine is in a 3/4 shade spot and has been slow to take off but I love the delicate foliage. Rozanne is a great weaver, it is more straggly in shade and doesn't bloom much and it crisps and sulks in full sun so a half shade or filtered sun spot is perfect for it. I like to put it under my roses where it gets a bit of sun protection and winds into the lower branches. Nimbus puts out a nice clump of foliage but it's a one shot wonder early in the season while Rozanne keeps on blooming all summer. I love Biokovo and its sister B. Karmina (honestly I can't tell the difference between the two) - like G. sanguineum it has nice fall color.

Nimbus is definitely more heat tolerant than most other purple geraniums, and it is an outstanding long bloomer. I also distinctly recall a Gardener's Journal or Diary program with Tony Avent at plant delights in which he said that Brookside was one of the most heat tolerant geraniums and is one of the few that they can grow and sell as a result. I recall that the TV clips of Brookside in their garden looked very good.

Montrose Nursery in NC has been long closed now, but when it was around, Nancy Goodwin sold quite a few different forms of G. pratense, and I remember her saying that it was a good performer in the gardens there. And that is central NC, CHapel Hill area, so I bet it is just as hot if not worse than MO. G. pratense is little known to most American gardeners except for 'Splish Splash' (really 'Striatum'), but there are many good garden plants in a range of colors from rich purple to lavendar to light pink to white, easily growable from seed -- you just have to look for them.

Among forms of G. x oxonianum, 'Pearl Bolund' seems unfazed by heat and is one of the best performing, longest blooming forms you can get.

Geranium Phaeum (sp?) has done very well here in Sydney with our long dry summer. Has been flowering constantly since late winter and only just now finishing.
The flowers are quite sparse along the long flower stalks and it is a dark reddy maroon purple.
The foliage is very neat and bun shaped and it divides easily.
I have it mostly in shade.
