A motor needed for a Sears Jointer - Plainer 4 1/8" #149.236222, motor # NL73512 by Northland. Sears has discontinued the tool and motor W/O any leftover motors. A friend is trying to find a motor to put the nice tool back in service. We'll appreciate any help in finding a replacement motor. Thanks!

I am not clear if you have a motor that you think is dead or you got a good deal and are looking for a motor to put on it.

It it is the dead motor, then you may revive it by cleaning the inside of the motor. About 11 years ago I thought the motor on my table saw was dead. I took it to a small electric motor repair shop. He showed me how to clean the area where the contacts area inside of the motor and it has ran perfectly ever since then.

I periodically clean those contact, depending on the useage of the saw, about every 2 to 3 years

He is looking for a motor or repair. The motor appears to have bad end-play spacers or bad bearings. It has too much end-play which causes the pulley end of the shaft to have too much vertical play. Our local small electrical motor shops have past on with the Good Original Owners. Grainger is one of our last hopes and they are not too interested in helping.

I have cleaned many contacts (on open motors vs sealed due to dust, paint, etc) an other parts were good. The indicators have been low or no power vs the excessive play this motor has.

"I have had bad experiences with the Griz." I have a couple of grizzly pieces that are about 15 years old. The 16 inch band saw needed some serious work to align the two wheels in the same plane. The 8 inch jointer ate a motor after only 3 weeks, but they did replace it and payed my shipping to return the bad motor. It is not Delta quality, but it has performed well. My circular saw is a 20 year old Unisaw (still branded 'Rockwell' at that time). It runs like a top. I have cast iron wings on both sides, and a larger extension table, but still cut plywood down with a Mag77 worm drive portable. It takes two people to run plywood over just about any table saw, and the seconds person is rarely available (or safe in the shop). Ninety pound attorney wives and 4x8 sheets of plywood are NOT a good combination (though I love her to death). You can use a smaller 'bench' saw on a larger wooden framed table to increase the safety with larger pieces. I have not seen a bench saw in years that can handle anything larger than four quarter hardwoods. You need a 1.5 horsepower (3 hp is much better) induction motor to deal with hardwoods over four quarter. If you used the 'maximum developed horsepower' junk of Sears fame, my 3 horsepower Baldor motor is over 60 horsepower. You can still slow it badly in eight quarter oak by overfeeding.

The places cabinetmakers get plywood do not offer cutting service (in my experience). I think being able to handle and cut a 4x8 sheet is a must for any cabinetmaker's table saw set-up. Sure, Lowes or HD sells shop grade ply in birch or oak for about $50 a sheet and they'll cut it for $0.50 a cut. But why limit yourself to the box stores? I get most of my material at a place called Aura Hardwood Lumber in San Jose, CA. It is a one of a kind establishment serving cabinetmakers from all over the Northern CA. I drive 50 miles to go there, when there are about 100 box stores closer. The prices are wholesale- the $50 sheet at HD cost $30 at Aura, and there are so many species and grades to choose from. Every cabinetmaker needs to find the Aura in their area. Do some homework; ask other woodworkers. As important as having the right equipment is knowing where to get the right material. But if you need all your ply's cut in half before taking them, you can't even shop there. If you don't have a truck or van to transport materials, how can you even get started? Not being able to cut a full 4x8 sheet on your tablesaw is like not having the right vehicle. You would need to pay some decent $ to get a truck or van. Same thing with a tablesaw. Buy a $1,500 cabinet saw and you will never regret the purchase, nor will you ever need to upgrade it. If you are saying, "$1,500 is not in my budget" then think of it like a truck. If you need a truck you need a truck, you have to find the budget for it, or forget about doing the things you need a truck for. You can't just buy a used sedan and call it a truck. Same thing with buying a table saw for making cabinets. Also keep in mind, if you can save $20 per sheet by shopping at a wholesale place like Aura, after 75 sheets the saw will pay for itself!

brickeyee, I have had old sears tools for many years. I used to use one table saw often and I have never had a saw bearing fail. I am glad that the bearings were easily available. However regarding price: while I agree that $100 or 160 is a perfectly fair price for a decent table saw, you likely could have done much better, especially if you were willing to do the repairs. For example, I often go to auctions (admittedly this takes time). I have seen many old sears saws go for less than $25 or $50. I recently got a Jet with extension table and bessimer fence for $125 and now I have a couple of sears saws sitting apart in my atic. Yes the Jet was an exceptional deal, but plenty of people have given up on the old stuff. When I have had motor problems, I just switch in another old motor that was $5 or $10 at a garage sale or auction; or free. By the way, Yes of course the tension was by weight; from a pivot block that may be missing on your saw.

Thank you H-Mac, I agree. I know the make and model bc I have researched so many, but will respect the anonymity of the poster. I have also heard that the bearing burn-out on this model prematurely too. The sad thing is that all these companies think price is the only decision factor, so they cut quality to compete, which is just the opposite of what they should do. But the campaigns of "BUy for less", "Get more for less", etc, has created a mkt of poor products that takes less $$$$ to bring them home so they can break earlier...I'd pay double for one that is quality, it would last and the strategic parts were replaceable. For now, we'll focus on the important date of Dec 25. Merry Christmas to all - tstex

Loger, the 149 prefix before the model number indicates that the planer was made by American Machine & Tool - maybe something there?

Have you looked a places like Harbor Freight, (Duck here comes the arrows) They usually have a lot of small motors. I don't know how far into the city you live, but we have:

These guys cater to to the farmer and contractors, and have all kinds of neat stuff. From wrenches for 2" Bolts, to amimal supplies, live chickens (in season), etc.

They usually have a section with small engines. If they don't have them I will bet they know where to get one.

Loger , even since your local elect jobbers have declined assistance numerous state wide elect. motor manufacturers could possibly help within a replacement motor within the specifications of the oem unit. Failing this local auto starter and alternator repair shops stock bearings brushs and stator replacment parts which can be used for a rebuild. Unfortunate that motor rewinding has become a thing of the past locally in most areas . Good luck and keep us posted .

Motor on my Craftsman table saw recently went out (direct drive motor). I looked up a replacement motor from the Sears site. I was shocked. A motor cost more than i paid for the saw. (bought used). I took the motor out and found that the rear bearing on the armature was bad. Local Sears said i would have to buy a complete armature, that bearings were not sold seperate.$138. plus shipping. I took the armature to Napa they crossed the bearing number, had one in stock for less than five dollars. I cut the old bearing off with my Dremel, put the armature in a ZipLoc bag, put in the freezer for a couple of hours to shrink the shaft. Put the new bearing on, put it back together and the motor works like new.

There should be a number on the motor that you can cross to the Grainger catalog.
It's been a few years since I did that but I found a 220V motor for an electric wall heater that way.

It should be very easy to retrofit a motor on these. Both of mine have separate motors with a belt.
