Blanket Flower - Oranges & Lemons

I purchased this plant a few weeks back and planted it in my perennial bed. It looked great when I first planted it but now the flower heads are starting to droop right over, making it look like the stem isn't strong enough to hold the flower heads up and the stem is very week, as if it will break soon. To me it always looks like it needs water but now I'm thinking that might not be the case. It has been very hot these past few days but I've been giving the plants enough water and all the other's look fine. I have it planted near Echinacea purpurea, Monarda "raspberry wine", Yarrow and a couple of different types of Veronica speedwell and they're all doing fine.

Any thoughts on what might be wrong? Is anyone else growing this plant?

It sounds to me like normal old transplant shock...My uneducated guess is that it will be fine.
Comparing a plant that has been in the ground only 2 or 3 weeks against a well established one is not a fair comparison.

Does it perk up in the mornings or at nighttime? Ever? If it does then as Harry said it is probably fine. Just getting comfy in the bed. You can always cover it with a laundry basket or lawn chair to give it a little break from the heat if you prefer.

These plants are tough customers. I suspect yours will be fine as long as it is getting regular water.

Lemon Plants have a mind of their own. They can be very frustrating and with the exception of the bad leaves ect you are experiencing exactly what a lemon plant will do. They will only cary to fruitation what the plant is programmed to bear. It may have a thousand blooms in clusters and all the blooms will drop all but maybe 10 and then only probably three will mature as growing lemons. The insect problem needs to be taken care of.You seem to be watering and feeding correctly.Its just the weird life of a Lemon tree. Some years they will bear profusley the next year they will drop all fruit. Just keep trying, you'll eventually succeed. Get rid of the bugs and give your plants a lot of sun...Good Luck ,you'll never taste a better lemon than a MEYER.

Hey there, it's me again. I came home from work this morning, which gives me a few unexpected hours to myself. And that's a good thing. Sooo, let me tell you all what Jen sent me in the way of seeds... large yellow columbine allium "aflutanese" iberis "tahoe" bombast poppy yarrow "saucy seduction" columbine "clemantine rose" jacob's ladder flower-of-an-hour (never heard of this one, did I get that right?) Jen, those columbines will look great in the garden! I had a large dark purple volunteer columbine in it this year, and I'm hoping it reseeded itself. I haven't had any for a couple of years, and really do like how they look! You sent the perfect yarrow. I'm getting rid of the yellow yarrow in my yard and have been wanting some of the purple/rose colored yarrow, cool! As for the others, I'm looking forward to being surprised by them next year. Gallardia just always looks "wild"...sort of like it's wind blown rather than a nice neat plant with upright stems and flowers. That's just the plant...if you don't like that look, don't plant gallardia...I don't!

Linda, I had the same problem with a couple of 'Goblin's last year, and those were planted the fall before. Are the plants being watered from overhead? It could be the weight of the water on the blossoms causing the droop. If so, you could try watering it only at the base to keep the foliage dry. I agree that if they look better in the morning, it is probably transplant shock though.

Linda C, the Gaillardia grandiflora tends to be kind of wild, that is why I prefer the neatness of 'Goblin'. See how "tidy" it looks:

Actually it's been looking the same morning and evening. There are a few stems that are standing upright and appear to be pretty strong but there are still 2 - 3 that have dropped right over and the stem is soggy where the bend is, so I know that these stems will not pick up, I will probably have to snip these buds off. Hopefully the rest will be okay. I have been watering them from the top and will keep that in mind the next time I water my garden. It's odd that the rest of my plants don't drop like this though and I've watered them the same way.

LindaC - I don't mind the look of the Oranges & Lemons Gallardia, I love the blooms, they've very pretty, however, they do have a rather ragged appearance, I totally agree with you there.

I'm certainly no expert, but my oranges and lemons did the same thing. I just waited it out to see what it would do and in just a short while it had spilled on over and began growing like that. Now it's so thick you can't tell that it had that tumble spurt. It really has made the prettiest spot in my fountain garden. Maybe you could wait a bit and see if yours does the same?

Did anyone here in zone 6 or below have success with Oranges and Lemons coming back? I have a friend who planted three of these last year, and none came back. She did give me seeds, and I winter sowed them. I did get 4 plants, and am anxious to see if they come true from seed for me.

Blanket Flowers are one of my favorites, they bloom and bloom like annuals, massive of bright colors.

They do not like too much fertilizer, it may because you gave too much plant food.

They also do not like to be disturbed, if must, try not to distub the roots by removing as much soil as possible with the plants.

They tend to be short lived, usually 2 years for me, but collecting seeds are easy and quick to germinate. If you start early, they will bloom the first year.

I have this plant in a pot with profusion orange zinnia. The zinnia looks great, gallardia has a leaf problem. I don't know if bugs are eating it or if it is a fungus. Do yours have nice foliage? What could be causing ugly leaves.

I planted some big pricey ones last year and they died by mid summer. They were so beautiful, I tried again this year with inexpensive four inch pots. They looked fairly unhappy for a good month after I planted them, but now they are truly beautiful, despite our positively searing heat for the past several weeks. I have faithfully deadheaded this year (right after the petals drop) and that seems to be important. Not only does the plant make more blooms, but the stems and leaves seem to get a new lease on life too after deadheading. The other difference is we've had more rain this year. I expect that has also helped. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for them to overwinter, but even if they don't, I'll probably get more next year. They are gorgeous next to blue salvia farinacea and the so-called orange sedge.

I planted Oranges & Lemons last year. It overwintered just fine and came back big and beautiful this year. It may be due, at least in part, to the arid climate I live in. We did get a lot of snow but I've got excellent drainage in that bed and the air stays pretty dry even through the winter.

HOWEVER, as others have mentioned, it IS a lanky grower. Mine is falling all over the place. Next spring I'll probably move it to a location where that isn't a problem (it's front and center in my main flower bed now) and give it an early trim so the stems won't grow so long.

I also generally prefer the compact mounds of the 'Goblin' Gallardia.

I also planted 'Fanfare' and it returned but is small. It could be location but I'm less impressed with 'Fanfare' at this point.

When I transplant something, I often put a beach umbrella over it for a week or so. Seems to help.

This is the first year I planted this gaillardia cultivar and I LOVE it. The color is so perfect. Not as hot as orange, yet not totally yellow. I love it. My first Blanket Flower was Goblin. I don't much care for the bi-color petals. Then I grew Burgundy--liked that better. It survived a couple of years.

But this Oranges & Lemons--love it. It is kind of floppy the first year. Does better if dead-headed. Does better if kept regularly watered at ground-level.

The only problem is that I put it in on the spur of the moment in front of 2 Moonbeam coreopsis plants. Now THERE'S a color clash. Clear cool yellow leaning to yellow-green, next to warm yellow leaning to orange. I don't know which one I'm going to move.....but one of them has to go.

I just read the patent on this plant. It is sterile and can't be propagated by seed. Bummer.

I had posted before about a friend who grew Oranges and Lemons last year and hers didn't come back. She did save me some seeds however, and I wintersowed them. I got three nice plants. Kept two and gave one to the friend who shared the seeds. Both that I kept are a little different. One is tall, with large, lobed leaves. The other is smaller, neater, and has smaller lobed leaves. The taller plant is blooming and the colors of the flowers are not Oranges and Lemons, but more like the common Blanketflower. The smaller plant is also blooming but the colors have not come out on the buds yet. I'm anxious to see what I get with the second plant. While my friends Oranges and Lemons plants didn't produce sterile seeds, I have the feeling that they don't produce seeds true to the parent either.
