first timer planting daffodils...need help please!!! thanks!
Comments (4)but then saw something called fortissimo which really looked beautiful and more interesting. I had Fortissimo bloom for me the first time this spring, and I was really WOWED by it, and thought it was very showy. I liked it a lot better than the all yellow Dutch Master. Does one tend to multiply more than the other? Not sure if one is more prolific than the other. Does one tend to do better in the Massachusetts area - zone 6? I think both would do equally well in your zone. Is it worth paying this much more for bigger bulbs? What will be the difference? I don't think there would be enough difference to pay that much more for bulbs that are just a little bigger. Chances are that all of the 12-14 cm bulbs would bloom just fine for you...possibly with the blooms a very little bit smaller. Would 100 daffodil bulbs be enough? Most of what i read says to plant the bulbs 5 inches apart... so if i do the math correctly 100 should be more than enough right? If it was me, I would sort of plant either 3 or 5 bulbs in a big hole, trying to space them with about 2-3" between them. I would prefer several blooming in bouquets, than what I would a line of blooms all in row. Possibly others will have input on the spacing and planting though. Welcome to the wonderful world of growing daffs. They are easy, and carefree and will reward you with beautiful springtime blooms for years and years, with only an occasional need to dig and divide them if they get too thick. Comments (10)How thick is the retaining wall? If it's planted only a couple feet behind the wall, it's only a matter of time before the wall cracks and crumbles. I know around here it happens all to often... retaining walls aren't meant to retain a massive root system. Even dwarf trees, given enough time, will knock it down. It all depends on time. If your 80 years old it doesn't really matter so to speek lol... if your 20 years old and plan to live in the house for some time almost any tree will cause damage. What about some tall grasses to block out the neighbor. The type of grasses that get 5-6' tall with pink or white flower spikes then some cool stuff like Juniperus horizontalis 'Mother Lode' that drapes over the wall?...See Moredoes size really matter?
Comments (2)Indeed, canning resources mostly seem to assume big, hearty pioneer families, eh? But the fine print of general instructions tend to say that smaller portions than those mentioned should be canned for the time of the smallest one given (meaning yes, if the recipe gives a time for quarts and pints, then do half-pints for the same as pints). I always can some tomato sauce that way---one cup is perfect to make a few mini-pizzas on pita for me and DH, for example. Or to add to a soup or stew. Comments (7)I'd consider 18cm as an average sized asiatic or oriental lily bulb....not especially large. This size is pretty common for better mail order bulbs. Aurelian hybrid or trumpet lilies typically generate larger bulbs. A local lily grower (and one of the better mail order lily sources) offers what they call 'field harvest' bulbs to their customers locally and these are massive things, sometimes the size of a small cantelope and weighing several pounds, but these are never shipped and are only available at their local outlets. The attached link is how they explain the correlation between bulb size and plant performance. Here is a link that might be useful: is bigger better?...See Moreelemire
