Newbie questions re: pro install of sprinkler system

Hi all:

I appreciate any help you irrigation experts can give me. I have read through most of the postings over the past 10 pages regarding installation of a sprinkler system. I just have a couple questions:

1. Aside from the initial installation cost, what other costs can I anticipate? Do most people pay to have some kind of annual/semi-annual maintenance done? How much, in general, does maintenance run and can it be done by my hubby or myself?

2. I have read that some people get anywhere between a 1-year to 5-year warranty with their installation...Do most of you find a 1-year warranty to be sufficient?

3. How much regular oversight is needed? We expect to be travelling for 5 months soon and our neighbor can program and do some minor oversight, but I would hate to inconvenience her if regular oversight was necessary. Basically, once you have it installed and programmed, can you count on it to be pretty self-sufficient for 4-6 months?

4. I tried to find some data regarding any appreciable value added to the home, but was unable to do so. So, in your opinion(s), does having a sprinkler system actually add appreciation to your home value? Somebody told me you can just add the cost to your selling list price, but I am unsure if she is just blowing smoke up my @ss. :)

5. Finally, just in case any of you are in Savannah, GA, do you have any recommendations for installers? ;)

1. Yearly costs may include fall winterization (if appropriate in your area)and a spring check and start-up. The backflow prevention device is also most likely to require a "Certified Test" and inspection each year.

2. 1 year warranty is sufficient, usually. Some of the components (heads, valves etc) will carry manufacturers warranty for several years but most contractors will charge labor to replace these items after the first year.

3. Periodic program changes due to weather and rainfall amount are about all that is necessary. Possibly a walk through of the system every few weeks to make sure each head is functioning properly.

4. Depends on the area. It might add to resale value and might also be just smoke UYA.

I have about 17,000 sq/ft of lawn and multiple planting beds in various areas of my property in central NJ. I have a 22 zone system which makes life easy. Its not cheap, but you might be able to get a deal in this market since I doubt they are doing a whole lot of installs. I think the initial install was about $5,000 and when I put in a bunch more zones it was $500 / zone. The initial work was less costly since they used a ditch witch to trench everything and the add ons had to be done by hand digging. I would not have been able to establish as nice a lawn on our new build site as quickly without the system as I don't have the time to haul hoses all over the place.

We work both in Columbus and Cleveland. The further North you get the more Poly you will see. I personally prefer Poly laterals w/ PVC mainline. I repair brittle and damaged PVC every Spring and hardly ever have to repair brittle or damaged Poly. Damage meaning due to freezing temps. I advise you not to use Poly for your mainline if you must then I would recommend a mastervalve. I am just happy that you are installing the correct backflow device, you have no idea how many improper backflow installs I see and how many systems don't even have them. If you go the Poly route then I would also advise you to use all insert fittings and we always double clamp all the fittings that will receive more pressure: off the valve, 90's, t's and so on. Some will tee into a line with a saddle, we find the saddles to be the number reason for underground leaks besides broken heads. Once we switched from saddles to all insert fittings our call backs dropped in half. Good Luck.. Here is a link that might be useful: lawn sprinklers

How can one accurately quote without a static pressure reading?? If , based on his numbers all the heads are quarter circle, then 10 heads x .81 gpm = 8.1 gpm flow. That alone is just outside the industry standards for flow in a 3/4" sch. 40 pipe. How likely is it that they would all be quarter circle?? If they are all half circle then 10 heads x 1.52 gpm = 15.2 gpm flow which is way out of line. Pressure loss per 100 ft. is around 18psi at that flow. Knowing the static pressure is important for that reason alone. Forget it if you add any full circles to the mix. There are other variables that affect how much water can be run but we do not have that info because we can't see the site. Based on what info you have given, I do not see this zone as operating very well. We generally do not run more than 8 gpm on a 3/4 pvc line and the conditions have to be right. High flow rates in a small diameter pipe bring along other problems such as water hammer noise.

Boston Ivy won't do any damage in 5 years. Parthenocissus tricuspidata is a climber that doesn't want to be a groundcover, unlike Hedera, a true ivy. Think twice about loosing Hedera in your yard, but you picked a vine that will stay in place with moderate maintenance. Plan to do a bit of pruning in the Spring when the vine is dormant to keep it away from soffits, shingles. wood siding, shrubs, and perennials. I don't think this will be needed until the 3rd year anyway. As for the honeysuckle, there are some bad actors in that family that you should avoid. Any Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) is not to be set loose. It will chioke your plants, children, and the gutter is a goner. Our native honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) is well behaved but scentless. The European woodbine honeysuckles (Lonicera periclymenum) are vigorous and scented. Love these but maintenance is needed once they are established. You can plant several varieties for a long period of bloom. As a final word of caution...I don't know what your house iis made of (stone, brick, stucco, wood, vinyl). Vines will eventually grow into cracks and crannies and do damage. You have to be vigilant. Also, unless you have brick or stone, vines hold moisture against the siding which can lead to expensive repairs. Be sure to place trellises so there is air circulation against the house. Good luck.
