check valves

How many check valves are required on a shallow well?

The pump is 1hp with a pump start relay. The pump is

40' from the well and it has a 2" check valve near

the well horizontally,and the other is near the pump

vertically. That one is an 1.5" check valve.

I'm thinking that the 2" one needs to go.

The sprinklers all just dribble. 6 zones.

Well is fairly new, so is pump.

Any thoughts?

Hi n jr,

What is the purpose of the check valve? My thought is your opposite. Check each check valve separately for malfunction. Also, your system needs to be completely air tight. Have you checked for leaks? What size is the mainline piping? Any gate valves on the mainline? Does your pump lose prime and hard to get flowing? What is the vertical distance between the pump and water table in the well? Tighten all fitting. Aloha.

The check valve is to keep the pump primed.
I don't know why there are two of them on the
suction side. The pipe from the well is 2".
1.5" brass check valve near the pump.
No gate valves. I'm thinking that the 2" check
valve down by the well is unecessary.When the well
was put in, the water really flowed,probably
about 25 gallons per minute before it was hooked
up to the pump. I haven't check for leaks. There's
a lot of yard to dig up. What do they use to dectect
a leak for 40' feet of pipe? Sounds like plumber
equipment?

Depending on the location of the inline check valve that is fine. The purpose is to keep the line full when the pump is off. The backflow preventer is for protecting the city/county water system from contamination. You are not on the city/county system so don't need it which you already know. The check valve should be as close to your pump system as possible to keep the line filled are far as possible. Save pumping time to fill the line each time. Also quieter because less air to squeeze out of your system. Also protects your pump from spinning backwards from draining mainline water. JMHO Aloha

Did you use Rinnai check valves? Which model Tankless water heater are you using? Does the water heater have the integrated recirculating pump? I would also reach out to Rinnai. The technicians are quite skilled and answered all my questions during my install. Try what Jake said, first eliminate the recirculation and see what the behavior is.

@mike_home, the Clorox tip was just something I saw the repair guy do about 10 years ago... this was the first time I did it myself :-/ Thanks for the video! I didn't know what you guys meant by "float", but now I see it's kinda built like a toilet so I get the concept now :-) The way they set up the plumbing, it's almost impossible to get the tank out! But I'll see if I can take it apart and clean it before buying a new one. If I do have to buy a new one... since the original pump's model number has a 15 in it, is the Little Giant VCMA-15 the proper replacement? https://littlegiant.com/products/hvac/condensate-removal-pumps/vcm-vcc-series/vcma-15-series/ I understand that an "S" in the model number means that it has a safety switch, so that's definitely what I'd want. https://www.amazon.com/GIDDS-521259-VCMA-15ULS-Automatic-Condensate-horsepower/dp/B000AHT78O/ If not, how do I determine the best replacement? Hi njr,

I believe the cv down by the pump is to keep the inflow full and the pump doesn't need to suck air in the intake line and lose prime. I don't really know what the one closest to the pump is for but it is probably insurance that the pump doesn't lose prime and worried about the other one leaking. JMHO.

The check for leaks is any visible fittings soap up(dish soap solution) or listen for sucking noises and tighten up fittings. If there are any buried fittings you are out of luck unless you know exactly where they are. Probably fittings closest to the pump vibrations would be the likeliest ones. JMOHO.
