Best smallish, yellow Austin

I have several apricot-ish/ yellow Austins: CPM, Golden Celebration, Teasing Georgia, Molineux, Graham Thomas. I'd like to have a really clear, pure, lemony yellow, on the smaller size (comparatively). Any ideas? Thank you!

The Pilgrim might be an option for you--it's one I want to try next year if I have room. It's pale lemon yellow, reputed to be very floriferous. Don't know how big it gets in your climate, though.

The Pilgrim is pretty large. It lists that it can be grown as a climber. On HMF it is described as: "Height of 42" to 10' (105 to 305 cm). Width of 5' . (150 cm)."
My friend has it here in zone 5 and it is a beast. Same story with Golden Celebration and Graham Thomas.
I would go with Molineux. It stays bushy, reblooms quickly, and stays within bounds.

I have two recommendations Jude the Obscure: Mine is 3 yrs old (my first rose!), and if you give him a good pruning, he just pours out amazingly fragrant blooms. Mine has about 30 buds and blossoms on it right now. He never gets a hint of disease (BS is a problem here). He makes me very popular with my neighbors! Molineux: I just planted 3 Molineux roses in a row (own-root, from Chamblees) to make a loose free-blooming hedge. They are little baby plants right now, but they come highly recommended on this forum

Best Austin for Rebloom, Scent & Big/Double Blooms

We've grown about a dozen different Austin roses and the best for rebloom, strength of scent, and large blooms are: 1. "Tamora" one of my favorite Austins, creamy peach. 2. "Mary Rose" damask rose scent, medium pink, scalloped petal edges gives it a ruffly appearance. "Mary Rose" blooms 3 to 4 weeks earlier in spring than does our "Heritage", is healthier, and produces more flushes each year. "Mayflower" was very healthy but not as pretty as Mary Rose, and has moved to a friends' garden. 3.Pink "Gertrude Jekyll", to my nose, has the best fragrance of any Austin. Deep rich Damask rose scent. Healthy plant. Lux. P.S. "Comte de Chambord" an old garden rose, repeats more than any of our Austins, is healthier, and is very fragrant, of damask rose.

Might be Take All fungus which has been rampant in central and north Texas for the past several years. Very important to know because currently available fungicides are ineffective, it spreads aggressively where the conditions are right, and unfortunately kills rather than just damaging the grass as the other common fungi pests tend to do. The chlorosis may be due to something else, but is one of the trailing signs of Take-All damage. A lot of good (and some bad) info about this on GW and elsewhere on the Web. Best for me was an article by a hill country extension agent. Can't locate it at the moment, but this commercial video:Take-All Patch - Austin appears to be largely based on that work and is a good starting place for understanding, identification and treatment. Additional symptoms and factors such as fertilizer use and lawn cutting height are covered in the following Alabama cooperative extension services paper. EDIT: The comment in the video that Take-All is primarily a problem in the shade assumes uniform irrigation. Our experience was just the opposite because our "sunny" irrigation circuits ran more frequently/longer than our "shaded" ones and therefore received significantly more alkaline tap water. Sure the amount of sun, humidity, and other factors contribute, but it's the surface pH that dominates in the cause and solution... at least until other effective treatments are developed. Which Yellow Austin: 'Happy Child' or 'Poet's Wife'?

I have The Poet's wife for its second year growing. My Austin's most of them it is 1 to 2 years before I really get the full benefit of them. last year it only had a few blooms. The first year the blooms were not as deep yellow as they are this year. It does get quite a bit of shade so I had considered moving it but it seems to be getting happier now. Starting to get a lot more blooms now and they are quite yellow. We just starting getting 90 degree heat and in July and August everything fades quickly if they bloom at all. I expect to have a couple months of nice color before the heat hits.

The one that comes to mind that is truly yellow and stays small is Happy Child, which I had in a previous garden. You can see it on HMFR.

The Pilgrim, DEFINITELY was a Climber in Southern CA.
A lovely, LOVELY bloom on a plant with nice foliage (here) and a yen to reach for the stars.

I tried for a long time to get Happy Child, and every one I got turned out to be something else.

Oh....Happy Child sounds like what you're looking for. The color is a clear yellow. Molineux is not.

Charles Darwin seems to be one that doesn't get too huge either. You might check it out as well.

I have the small yellow Austin, "Charlotte" and its a great little rose...stays small and is very healthy...beautiful blooms also and it blooms continuously.

Happy Child! Can say only good things about this little rose. And color stays yellow. Charles Darwin was trying to grow 6 foot for me by the end of this season, and had to be relocated.Also Charles starts with yellow buds, and becomes kind of cream. Not really pretty, but I forgive him for flower shape and fragrance. Happy Child has color, compact size, fragrance, and shape. Also not too sick even in BS kingdom. Maria

Gruss an Archen is really good. It's neither Austin or pure yellow, but short, rich bloomer, well worth checking out. If I remember correctly this is one of his favorites.
