What is the best Austin for a planting of three....

What is the best Austin for a planting of three like they suggest planting at 18" apart?

I have 225+ roses and only one Austin, a Graham Thomas that I use as a climber in a 1/2 whiskey barrel, so I am not a rose newbie, just Austin challenged.

I want to make a planting all by itself, so they need to be healthy, vigorous, and very floriferous as well.

I prefer apricot blends and yellows. No pinks, whites, or reds, please.

I'm in a different climate than you are, but I adore the Austins. They're disease resistant even here in black spot central, deliciously fragrant, and very vigorous growers even in my challening garden conditions. Some of the strongest yellow types I have are Queen Nefertiti, Crocus Rose, and Jude the Obscure. Nefertiti seems to like the heat a little better than the others, but all those did well through the hottest most humid part of our hell-hot summer. I also have Graham Thomas and Golden Celebration, but they haven't shown themselves to be nearly as heat happy as the others. Despite some of the rave reviews I've read on websites about those two, I found them both disappointing in comparison. Abraham Darby is probably a no fail option anywhere...a true Timex of a rose here. But it can lean toward the pink side of apricot depending on weather. Yet if you could tolerate another truly unique pink...try Mortimer Sackler. Great unusual flower shape and a dream of a work horse rose. My personal favorite. Good luck with the garden fairies with whatever you choose. Just get the one that "speaks" to your heart the most. That's always the best place to start. :)

Great input, so very helpful. It does sound like Braithwaite is too big for what I'm planning, at least not three together! Last year I planted my first Austins, Falstaff & Graham Thomas, against a south facing wall. Rick, thanks for the pics of your winter prep. I actually used hay last year, but not nearly as much, this year I won't be so shy. Luckily we had an extremely mild winter. Silly Falstaff tried to sprout leaves all winter long. Now Falstaff is reaching 6' ft high without support - time to get a trellis behind it though. So Bart, Falstaff in a group of three will be a mammoth, I'd love to see pictures, assuming your tripod holds up. The growth of GT has been more horizontal, a problem in this spot because he gets battered by rain rainfall from the roof edge above and looks cramped against the wall. Definitely needs a trellis or a new home. Here's little more info on my scheme for next year. For color - deep crimson contrasted with apricot. I'm growing Grace this year, which is lovely, but I'm looking for a deeper apricot for the new bed. It will be abut 20' long in a wide open area (no wind breaks, so hardy is important). It's a border between lawn and street, about 10' in from the road. I don't have a lot of depth to work with, and I don't want it to look like a hedge. I imagine I could go 2 plants deep, and I got wondering about the planting in 3s approach. The look I want is like the GT, broad plants with arching growth rather than the upright Falstaff. Tall is ok if there will be horizontal balance. Lady of Shalott is touted as very hardy and in photos I've seen, it's the perfect color. Munstead's color looks wonderful but I thought it might be a bit short next to LoS, so Lori it's encouraging to hear you say 4x4. Is it as deep a color as advertised, and does it fade much? Wilt? Michael, could you tell me more about Prospero? I found that when I search for red/crimson on the DA website, Prospero is not in the results. So I now realize that their filtered search is not showing me nearly all that they have, and wondering all that I might be missing. I'm open to any suggestions, not just Austins. devon gardener: thank you for the 2 recs! I will look them up pronto. ann: that's amazing about your 4 bloom cycles with pruning Leander. I wonder if having a real winter helps with the rebloom. We have let our Leanders grow for probably 4 yrs without a trim, but it didn't improve the repeat. In fact, we started trying to trim them back every 2-3 yrs to see if the repeat would get better. Our best repeats have followed the winters with the heaviest rainfall (El Nino years). It's a rose worth keeping even with only a massive spring bloom - magnificent! I agree with you about RMV - I think the earlier imports of grafted Austin roses were generally healthy (all the roses I bought in the early 1990's thrived. When the English roses became quite popular, say from 1996 on, many were weak (& often mislabelled!). I had particularly bad luck with Star roses. Hopefully now the bigger nurseries are paying attention and cleaned up their rootstock. I have had good luck with some ownroot Austins, but certain varieties are hard to get going.

I know it's too early to ask, but can you tell me about their growth, repeat flowering capacity,disease resistance ect. Can't really tell you anything--they are too new. Windermere looks like it will be a compact grower. The others will be much taller, I think. Do the inner petals of LA appear as light yellow with the sun on them? No, not really. The entire flower, even just opening, is an ivory color (like 'French Lace', if you have that one). No blush pink, no yellow, just ivory. Windermere opens an extremely faint apricot color and then goes ivory. What was the fourth Austin? Bishop's Castle. It's just starting to get buds now. Flowers on Tea Clipper are large. Lichfield Angel flowers are a little smaller than Tea Clipper. Windermere flowers are about the same size as Ambridge Rose. It looks very much like an ivory version of Ambridge Rose, but with the Jude/Abraham type of fragrance.

I think Molineux is the must-have yellow for sure. This rose is pure entertainment as the blooms change from morning 'til night and even until days later before they're spent. I'll also put in a vote for Pat Austin for her incredible shades of copper/peaches/yellows as she struts her stuff and repeats her fool head off. Tamora is one of those love-at-first sight roses too- color and scent to remember well into the cold of winter. Have fun.. I'm jealous as you start this Austin journey!

The only apricot-ish or yellow Austins with good zone 5 performance are:

'Jude the Obscure'
'Graham Thomas'
'Golden Celebration'
'Crocus Rose'
'Charlotte'
'Crown Princess Margareta'
'Leander'
'Taasing Georgia'

'Pat Austin', while gorgeous and one of my favorites, is an annual in Z5. 'Molineux and 'Tamora' perform only slightly better and may grow to 2' x 2' by September.

I think you should consider Molineux and Tamora. Here, the reach about 6', but stay compact. The show no octopus qualities which makes them good for a tight grouping. They also produce many blooms all season. They sail through my zone 6 winter. I think you can grow them if they are shielded from the winter wind.

I'll put in a word for Sharifa Asma, my hands down vote for beauty of bloom. It has been smallish in my garden, but the flowers are exquisite and really my favorite of all my roses. It's reputed to have a harder time in very hot sun, but I haven't had the problem. Mary Magdalene is a similar plant for me, small with beautiful flowers, but a shade less "old rose exquisite" than Sharifa.

Ambridge Rose, I'm always surprised how little mention she recieves. The most beautiful luminiscent apricot with a scent to die for.

Cymbaline. I saw this at the Vintage Gardens home garden a few weeks ago and it is simply divine. Another one of my favorites is Lordly Oberon, which nods down at you from above.

I have two recommendations

Jude the Obscure: Mine is 3 yrs old (my first rose!), and if you give him a good pruning, he just pours out amazingly fragrant blooms. Mine has about 30 buds and blossoms on it right now. He never gets a hint of disease (BS is a problem here). He makes me very popular with my neighbors!

Molineux: I just planted 3 Molineux roses in a row (own-root, from Chamblees) to make a loose free-blooming hedge. They are little baby plants right now, but they come highly recommended on this forum
