Raised beds with clay soil

User

My vegetable garden beds are raised beds, not intentionally, but after digging the sod out, loosening the clay soil by digging, and adding lots of compost, they ended up being about 8" above the level of my lawn.

Last year, the edges of the bed sloped down into the lawn. This year, I have been trying something new; I have been trying to pack the soil on the edge of my beds so that they form a bit of a wall. It's working so far.

I haven't been at all scientific about it, just trying to step on the soil at the edge of the beds and compact it enough to prevent it from sloughing off an sliding into the lawn like last year.

Next year I'll have to remember to use a plywood form to help shape a more vertical wall. Of course, the more OM in the soil, the less well it packs, so I'll have to enlarge the beds just to get access to the 'virgin clay', clay without so much compost in it.
