Too late to plant spring bulbs? Help for 'new' W NE garderner
Comments (5)Hello again, How did you ever give up subtropical temps to move to NE? I think you may need to lighten your clay soil a bit, but since you already have stuff in the ground, you will know soon enough. Sometimes the bulbs around here don't come up because the squirrels and other creatures eat them during the winter months. Some gardeners go to great lengths to prevent this from happening. My mom swears her neighborhood squirrels were on the look out when I was planting and they'll be digging them when no one is looking! Different type bulbs require differing depths. I would follow directions for whatever you are planting regardless of the the temp of the soil. You are not alone liking goldenrod. Around my way, most of us yank them as weeds but others actually plant it, so its all in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Pesky weeds seem to be so hardy! Mulch may help limit the weeds, but if your soil is so much clay, you probably don't want to mulch. I would suggest soil analysis or start another post regarding clay soil. I have learned from some very knowledgable gardeners here on GW - very generous with their expertise. Good luck and welcome to NE. Sorry this has been such a harsh winter. Comments (9)I planted some wildflower tulips indoors, the quality of the bulb makes the difference. Apparently mine like low light, after trying to get a good light schedule down, I just left them alone. I found they really gotta be deprived, a little overwatered, dried out well, lots of light to barely any and growth gets pretty encouraging with erratic temp fluctuation. the ones I forced trying to figure out anyway. So I have some more with some daffodils I am keeping colder to get to root well, in another pot, waiting to see the difference. the hormones in the bulbs seems a bit too high, but i don't know. these might die, but, maybe not. my conclusion is, too much light they get leggy, yellowish and life cycle too fast. maybe not enough cold. so as far as too late, i have no idea and assume the cold helps regulate bulb hormones for even growth....See MoreIs it too late to plant lily bulbs in Calgary now?
Comments (2)Asian lily and day Lilly grow like weeds. My wife put lots in and I removed them because the bettels they attract .they will grow no problem right now. You can plant them now no problem. The lady at the garden center is wrong. We have not even passed annual last frost date in calgary yet. My lilies are about 2" sticking out now. You can put lillies in anytime. They are invasive and super hardy but the bugs they attract can take a liking to other plants and are gross little mean red bettels....See MorePlanting Lily/Dahlia bulbs- too late?
Comments (6)who knew.. titles used to not be editable .. go figure... thought for a minute there i was losing my sanity ... shut up the rest of you .. lol .. plant at recommended depth ... you dont have to fill the hole all the way back up .. as it acclimates ... you can backfill more ... or just fill up the hole in fall after dormancy ... im presuming the lily will stay in the ground .. so it will need to be at proper depth.. if you think you can remember.. you can reset it in fall ... i have no clue if dahlia need to be lifter for a z8 winter ... but same logic ken...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
