I can't seem to pull any gas up to the sparkplug inside the cylinder. It will run on ether.

I have pumped gas up to the carb with the primer bulb and upon removing the top cover of the carb, can see gas emerge when the small rocker valve at the top of the carb is depressed.

So my question is, if I have gas at the top of the carb inside, why can I seem to get any gas out of the carb. It seems very clean.

Is anyone familiar with the inner workings of this poulin carb. I can't see what causes that rocker valve to release gas. I do see a rubber diaphram which installs over the carb so is it maybe vacumn which opens the gas flow?

I have good compression. The rubber manifold looks new. All gas lines look good.

Ideas appreciated.

d-i-e-a-p-h-r-a-m. Basiclly it has to pump fuel or suck fuel through the carb. when you pull the rope or the fuel will just lye there. probably a Zama carb. CUXXX or caXXX, if so get that number off the carb. and go to a parts shop and get a gasket kit. I would also look real close at the fuel lines and primer bulb for any dry rot or cracks. if it's cracked it will suck air and the fuel will just lye there. This includes the line going into the gas tank especially if you have ran any corn gas in it??? you can also goggle zama.com and there web site will give you detailed instructions on how to rebuild/reseal the carb. But make sure you observe how and where the parts you disassemble go by hand notes or pictures and observed how many turns the lo and hi jet screws are. tha way you can get it close to the orginal setting (unless you piddled with them) when assembling it.

Things are probably a little different here in Australia. I had an old 20" McCulloch and it was a great saw did everything I wanted and more. But it met with an accident and I had to get a new saw there and then. So I went to the local hardware chain store and the best saw they had was a Poulin rebadged McCulloch so having no other choice I bought it, and that's when my problems began. After two tanks of fuel the saw started to bed or run in and went out of tune but the carby required a special tool to adjust the mixture which they won't sell you so I made one. That overcame the initial problem. I then took the saw up to my brothers place 3,500 Ft up in the mountains and the saw ran lean due to the altitude but I could retune it. I don't know what your fuel is like in America but the blend of fuel over here can change from brand to brand and tank full to tank full and while youc car has a computerised injection system it can adjust to suit these variations but highly tuned motors such as you have on a chain saw can not As a consequence if you are just a handyman user you may not be aware of these sorts of problems with saws and so what is not a problem for a professional user can be a major problem for a not so expert user. I do not know Brian as I was not there, but this may have been the problem you had with the first saw. Now having worked for a company importing and distributing saws and being in the engine design department of the same company as I said this was a nuisance to me but to a less experienced person it is a major problem. Especially if you have to keep taking the saw back to the shop for a quick tune up instead of being able to do it yourself. I also spent 30 years as a volunteer Bush Fire Fighter and as there were always variations in the blend of fuel and we could just about go anywhere from the oceans edge to the mountains so each saw had a screw driver attached to it to adjust the carby mixture for the blend of fuel or altitude. In fact in such circumstances it could be a matter of life or death. Again because we needed reliable saws we always used Sthil. This standardisation also meant parts were interchangeable. But now I have had my McCullock/Poulan saw for a while you start to notice other things like the chain sprocket is wearing out fast. But for me the biggest bug is the fact that on this saw the exhaust comes out towards the top of the muffler and blows forward where it tends to strike the log and blow back in your face. This results in you running out of breath quickly and also at least in my case suffering an angina attack. The result is I will be replacing this saw fairly soon. So my advice to even a home handyman is, when you buy a saw check it out well. Have a look at what the Pro's use and be guided by that. Also for peace of mind be prepared to spend a little bit extra as it will in time pay for itself. Finally remember that in the first few tanks of fuel the saw will run or bed in and the tune may change so if you can not perform a tune up yourself take it to the shop and have them do it for you. The problem could be as simple as that.

don't know if ya'll will believe this, but I have a husky 55. I bought new about 22-25 years ago. been in the shop once after using for about 8 years because the the idle was off. Stihl might compare to husky quailty but no one else can. i wouldn't be afraid to buy either brand, husky or stihl. I'd stay away from either brands "home owner" saws. these "home owner" saws are not produced to the same exacting standers or with the same quailty parts ie rings, piston heads, cylinder walls ect as the their semi pro saws are. well thats my two cents. ps. I'm still using the husky 55. it's not made any longer. the husky 455 fills the niche of the old 55s like i have. Not sure but I believe the 455 can be bought with an eighteen inch bar for under $500.00 ouch! I know. but the old adage "you get what you pay for applies to chainsaws too.

I have found that most of the trouble with small two stroke engines can be attributed to either their carbs or their exhaust ports. Yes, there can be ignition problems but most of the time a magneto either works or it doesnt. Chances of it being the carb if it ran good yesterday but wont run today are slim. When a good running engine slows down, wont accelerate and becomes hard to start the first place I look is on the exhaust side of things. Remove the muffler and using a flashlight look into the exhaust port of the engine. If the exhaust ports are partially plugged then you have found your problem. Here is how to fix it. Using the pull starter or if you have the side cover off, turn the flywheel with your fingertips while looking through the exhaust port at the piston. Using the flashlight watch the piston move up and down in its stroke. Position the piston at the very bottom of its stroke to remove the carbon. Using a stick or a dowl rod or even a plastic knife, scrape the carbon out of the port. You do not want to be poking around in there with a screwdriver or anything metal because you do not want to gouge the piston or the cylinder. After your finished removing the carbon take the spark plug out and blow the dust out with either your breath or some compressed air. Point the exhaust port toward the ground and tap against the side of the cylinder which allows the remainder of the dust to fall out. Finish the job by cleaning the carbon out of the spark arrester screen either inside the muffler ar attached to its outlet with a screw. While you have the case apart go over the bolts to make sure they are all tight. Pay particular attention to the crankcase and carb adapter mounts. On some designs you have to loosen the carb mounting bolts to get to the mounting block bolts behind the carb. If your unfamiliar try to find a schematic of the engine to guide you as to where the bolts are located. Generally these diagrams are available on the manufacturer's websites under parts. Next, reverse flush your fuel filter with some Jet Spray and squeeze all of the fuel lines between your finger tips to make sure they havent rotted from the MTBE in the fuel. The fuel lines often get pin holes that will open up as you roll the lines between your index finger and thumb. This is a basic 50 hour service on a two stroke engine. Reassembly is the reverse of how you took it apart. Good luck and let us know if you have any questions. Bob. P.S. Remember these are small two stroke engines often being pushed upward of 12,000 rpm at high speed. Thats something like 200 power strokes a second. A little extra oil in the fuel will help keep your engine running for many years.

This is "John" with a changed, but registered, User Name. Thanks for the echo tip. It's just a bit too small for bucking the 3 ancient ashes that nature felled for me this year in the woods out back. I had tried a new Homelite 20" from HD for $100, but there were obvious mixture problems, so I returned it ASAP. I got the Sears 20" for $179 on-line this afternoon, free shipping, etc., figuring that all big box stores are dumping their 20" saws, and, sure enough, when I went to the Sears store to get my free quart of pre-mixed fuel tonight, theirs had been marked down to something like $189 for tomorrow's 1-day sale. Sears weighs the same as Homelite (21 lbs.), which I handled pretty easily. Will keep you posted on whether 50cc really quacks like 50cc.

I know it is easy to read more into something than is meant on the forums. I self-debated whether to add more explanations to soften my intent, but decided that simplet might be better. I'm sorry you did not pick up my intent. No, I don't feel superior. I don't think less of you either rcmoser. I just hope others will maybe pick up on the spelling.

The original post is for "Poulin" but most know the correct name is "Poulan", unfortunately this site does not allow editing.

I hate the discussions about the decline of the American education system and how poorly the teachers and educators are doing their job. Most of the time I think it is the students and parents that are declining in their efforts to achieve education. The fifth deadly sin...sloth.

But, it don't change anything I understood when he was talking about evidently you understood what I was taking about. Spelling has nothing to do with higher education. has to do with memory, some people are good at it, just like others have limiting factors that prevent them from ever being good speller's. Acutally his spelling is closer to the sound anyway depending on how you say it IMO?!

Now if we "were" teaching grammer or english at any level I would consider it important to correct every mistake, cause after all that's what we are in the class for.

IMO most of us can't spell even one's with degrees can't spell, that's why there are so many spelling aids, then you add the different meaning to same word.

Some Teachers have always had a tuff job, it getting tuffer everday, some are just AH's, and some don't have a clue what their doing just in all walks of life the majority are doing a great job. IMO I also think the gen X factor plays the biggest roll!.

The smart teachers with good memory go higher so they don't have to be in the class rooms IMO. And because they have the higher education piece of paper they can boss and tell the ones that don't what's right or wrong. When they may have little experience in that area. Yes, degrees are good, usually commands more money, and something to be proud of, but that don't mean "there" "right" all the time or know what they are talking about. IMO we see good examples in Fed Government.

Ok I done?!? Hooray! Thank you for the applause!!! I'm Like a cockabur thorn just won't go away and keeps borrowing deeper. Some say I'm a AH, but "I" find that hard to "believe"

I only offered the correction because it was spelled incorrectly in two posts. With the second post attempting to give the corrected spelling. I am not good enough at grammar to offer corrections in that arena.

I only disagree with you about the spelling. It's a slippery slope to say spelling it how it sounds is okay. You end up with Ebonics or any other derivation that is really just an excuse not to learn proper English as taught in school. Or even something like "newspeak" from George Orwell's "1984". If the parents don't enforce, it's the rare kid that says they will learn it on their own.
