Need advice on buying a chain saw
Comments (20)I bought an almost new "McCulloch" MAC-335 at a local auction the other day for AU$100, which is about half the price of a new one. The seller was the State Police department, so I assumed it was unclaimed stolen property. Unfortunately, I wasn't observant enough at the inspection to see that the chain-brake didn't work properly (i.e. I didn't start it). I only realised it was stuffed when I got it home and tried it... sometimes the chain wouldn't stop when I pushed the brake handle forward :(( As a chain saw novice, I initially thought the smoke coming out of the case near the chain's drive was just exhaust, but the smoke got worse after a minute or two, and then the chain-brake wouldn't work at all. When I looked at the casing on the chain-side, the sticker that the auctioneer had put on the case was bubbling and the case was melting! (I can only assume they put the sticker there to cover up previous heat damage to the plastic case!) Removal of the casing revealed a charred mass of melted plastic inside, which had seized up the chain-brake mechanism :(( To rub salt into my wounds, when I rang around for McCulloch spare parts, I was told McCulloch went out of business ages ago, and it would be nearly impossible to find any spare parts. I then found out that the McCulloch brand (in Australia) now belonged to Electrolux. When I rang Electrolux they told me they had sold it to Husqvarna! I took the saw into a guy who said he might have McCulloch parts from wrecked machines. He took one look at it and said it was in fact a re-badged Poulan, a brand name also now owned by Husqvarna! If I had read Dock's post on March 24 I would have saved myself some grief :( So off I went to a Husqvarna distributor and, after a bit of searching, he found out that the McCulloch/Poulan/Husqvarna parts I need are available for AU$80. The moral of the story is... Do your research before buying a brand name and buyer be VERY aware at auctions....See MoreWho makes Deere's saws?

My statements hold true for Stihl trimmers and blowers as well....what kind of problems are your "operators" experiencing.....they are bullet proof. They don't own the majority of the commercial market from owners with down time. Deere is a marvelous company that makes many great machines.....chainsaws in not one of themÂ..In fact they are usually just branded Deere. If you are in the market for an ok consumer grade chainsaw than Deere might be acceptable. If youÂre looking commercial I would say Stihl, Husq or Jonsered, and some of the Echo line. Deere is not in the same league. If youÂre looking consumer/residential grade a better saw for maybe a little more would be husq or echo....See MoreWhich Chain Saw Stihl - Echo- or ?
Comments (19)Nothing wrong with the 192T, it's just not a saw I would recommend for anything other than in tree work. They are handly lightweight saws, just uncomfortable for anything other than quick cutting IMO. I wouldn't say never use it for general cutting, but I would recommend a small rear handle saw over a T saw. JMO though. You should be able to run your Stihls at 50:1, I believe. I am not sure on which has more priority, the oil or the saw but I think it is the oil. Meaning the older saws may specify 32:1, 40:1 etc. but that was based on oil formulations then, IIRC. Current formulations lubricate better and require less oil, hence 50:1. If you want an inexpensive 80cc saw, look around at your local HD Tool Rental centers. They sell their Makita 6401's for $180-225 (depending on age and rentals). They are decent 65cc saws (rebadged Dolmar 6400). You can pick up an P&C kit from Baileys from ~$190. This gives you one of the best 80cc saws around for under $400 and it will be nearly new. Baileys also has a Big Bore aftermarket kit that has good reviews. It gives a little more cc's (85) and maybe a little more power but it is only ~$120 for the kit. I'd run the 80cc with a 24" bar and maybe a 28-32" bar for the occasional larger stuff. You are doing well on your purchases. The Labonville chaps are quite well made and that video is an interesting view. They are way cheaper than any hospital visit you might have from an accident....See MoreBest chain saw for the money?
Comments (95)Lok: Yeah the 361 is very lean on starting . I re-jetted mine . As for the Older Stihl Models and Ethanol Fuel , get some Star*tron from Walmart . I was advised of it for consideration from a fellow forum member and it has worked very well within my Daughters Snowblower which is ethanol fueled . I also bought some for my Diesel and have found increased fuel savings . If all is fine with Compression and the Ignition Modules a simple fuel circuit cleaning should solve your issues with the older saws ....See Moreewalk
