To those who grow Golden Celebration...

I planted this rose bareroot from Pickering about a month ago placed toward the front of a border. I thought it was only supposed to reach 4 feet or so, but the more I read the more I think it might become a huge rose that would be happier with support.

Should I move this rose to a spot up against a fence or somewhere where it could be allowed to grow big? Or should I leave it where it is and get a medium sized obelisk or other structure to train it on to?

I welcome all suggestions. Thanks!!! Shelley

It gets big here in the South. I believe mine is three years old this year and it's about 6' x 6'.

I like it as a specimen because of the form and the way the blooms line up on the "weeping" branches. Those long canes would work wrapped around an obelisk though, so it's just a matter of your personal preference on that. My instinct would be if I can make it work without moving it, that would be better than digging it up and shocking it.

I also have a GC up against a fence. It is only 4 months old too. Does its 'weeping form" mean that it is unnecessary to train it horizontally or preferable not to? Does it support itself?

hoovb: That was a long time ago in Mar Vista -- many people wish they had bought back then because MV has improved quite a bit since! We are happy to have gotten our house 10 yrs ago -- one of the last old ones from the early days of Abbot Kinney creating the Venice Canals -- and, it's taken a lot of pioneer spirit but I got the big garden I wanted, an old rambling house. a view of the ocean from afar & lots of ocean breeze & fog, all in an old neighborhood that's like a village (used to be covered in bean fields a hundred years ago). All the vacant lots have been developed in the last couple years (McMansions of course!), but MV retains its old charm nonetheless. And now we even have a Farmers Market on Sunday -- and it's a great place to garden!

Jessica, you've done a great job for a very promising beginning! Like your approach & the way you've arranged the bed. Saw your post last night before shuttintg down. Came back today & first stopped at your "have you used a support like this for a rose?" thread. Should have landed here first - to check the actual height of the wall. Somehow had the impression it was much higher. Please forgive my blathering about tall trellises on the other thread - duh! Looks like the porch ledge with the pot & planter is around 6-8' long? Lattice panels, with the "boxes" set overlapping either horizontally or diagonally, come in 4x8 standard sizes. You could set uprights to frame the porch opening & support the lattice, stacked vertically if appropriate to the area you decide to cover. You could cut a porthole or diamond "window" in the center of the lattice that extends above the ledge & edge it with flexible molding. If the wall to the right of the Lady would accommodate it, you could extend the lattice on that, too, needing a third upright at the far end downslope. That would give you the uniform, uncluttered custom look you may be after. Not a difficult job for the handy homeowner, especially if you use the twist or pound-in fittings to set the uprights. Another option that comes to mind is to use a garden arch spanning the side of the porch (or wider) parallel to the porch & house, spaced so it sits in the bed a bit away from the wall. The climbers could be guided to the arch supports as well as fanning through the empty space, and the whole would provide an "awning" effect along the top of the porch opening. The top could be arched or squared. That could be made with uprights & crosspieces, lattice or crossbars or both could be incorporated into the design on the sides, top and/or wall & opening, using the same type of components as in the link. If you don't feel up to building such a structure, you could look into metal pipe fit-together arch kits & modify to fit your space. Ran into (another) irresistible sale some years back for this type of metal tubing garden arch. They're often used for wedding arches as well & easy to come by this time of year in crafts stores, among others. Come boxed as kits to assemble, with straight & curved pieces that join together with holes drilled for screws to hold rigid. J&P & other gardening sites sell them for $80 & upwards, but they can be found for a fraction of that in white or green. With two sets, the pieces can be combined to make one set of legs longer (which you'd need for the slope) or widen the top span. You can use half an arch placed so it bends backwards toward the house wall or other support. Originally picked up 10 of these at $5 a pop to use as 3-D design models for arch tunnels & rings, sort of a giant erector set. One's been up a few years now, meant to support a vine temporarily while the porch arches were painted, and surprisingly has no signs of weathering as yet. Might want to keep an eye on the downslope end of your new bed, to see if heavy rain tends to wash away the mulch & erode the soil there. If so, those build-by-block garden wall stones might be installed to prevent that & the end of the bed leveled a bit more. May be unnecessary, but keep an eye out. When faced with a design challenge, often print multiple copies of pictures & draw on them to visualize the options & compare. What do you envision there? Regarding Golden Celebration & water needed - I've found it needs no more nor less than other roses here in central Virginia. But we have a fairly high average yearly precipitation at 50" or so - perhaps similar to your garden? This June & July rainfall was steadier than typical, and all the roses loved it - never seen them bloom so abundantly in July before. As far as support - agree not necessary - depends on what look & form you're after. Decided to corral mine within a structure when it began to reach far into the arms of its companions - though that was a lovely look on its own, it didn't suit the location of that bed between the front walk & porch. (I like the abundant nearly wild look, but my husband prefers a more cultvated restrainment, so we compromise in that prominent location.) This is my report from July of this year, and you may want to read the full discussion in the link. Planted Golden Celebration 4? years ago in the center of a garden bed that spans the front porch. Saw within a year that it wanted to grow tall & left it to its own devices to arch for two years trying to figure out how to support it vertically. Assembled a 2-foot square copper pipe obelisk around it rising 9' from ground level. It's not tied to the supports but simply confined within them, which shapes it into a pillar form with the branches finding their own way within the verticals & spilling out over the cross pieces. Like this tall narrow yet full effect, the structure it bears as a centerpiece & the room given other plants in that bed. If the obelisk were removed today, the rose would easily arch down to a width of 15' & overpower the scale of the planting & its neighbors. Mine started with lax thin canes but has firmed up well over time so the blossoms' stems face outwards instead of nodding as they did at first. The framework supporting it allows it to arch gently & it has many flowering shoots all along the branches. Just counted 18 along 2' of cane, and many of those are budding their own clusters. I've never pruned it, just deadhead the sprays. No dieback here in central Virginia just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains & no disease despite my lazy no-spray ways. At first the blooms came mostly one to stem, but ever since has put out sprays of at least five. Repeats so rapidly, with so many clusters budding as others are blooming that I'd have to call it continuous from mid-Spring past the first frosts - anywhere from mid-April through to Christmas. Love the scent & the nuance of color. Only in temps in the high 90's does it bloom plain yelllow. In the early flush its first Spring after planting the preceding Summer, some blooms were half bright tangerine & half egg-yolk yellow, as if they had a line drawn down their centers. Not sure what you want..but it made me remember what I did for our church once...I covered a pop up tent with sheets dyed gray then I spray painted with a darker gray and green to make it look like a large rock tomb. with a rock for the door. Then to step it up a few years...lol....Why couldn't you take a big balloon , blow it up and paper mache it.Cut it in half so it would have a pop up tent shape. Paint it gray . Make it lumpy and bumpy..then paint it. I had moss on my tomb...that could be used too. With a wooden cross and purple cloth draped over it and lillies. Maybe even a crown made with twigs. I have bushes growing out by the creek that have thorns...they would work great. But if you have little ones in your home...I have used "Bridle wreath" bush twigs to form a wreath...you could use something like that too. Now...if that's NOT what you were asking...I'm sorry...This post will not self destruct in 3 seconds...due to NO editing...or deleting... Antique postcard often have beautiful pictures that would make nice table settings. I have one here that is a large egg with wheels and two poles out in front. Like an oreintal rickshaw. I has a purple ribbon tied around it and small purple flowers on it,(maybe violets.) A young girl girl sitting there (think ceramic doll)holding pussy willows and little fluffy yellow chick....That would be cute. patti

You can prune it so that it supports itself, pruning the outer canes to 18 inches so that they form a short fence that supports the longer inner canes.It id demonstrated on the DVD from the David Stone workshop at Ashdowns.

You know this might now work for you but it did for me and I refer you back to David Stone's demonstration as well, as to how to treat it, but (having said that)....I have three but one of them in particular is at the front side of my driveway bed. I knew it did not have a lot of room but I needed it there --- I mean needed it --- so, I found a trellis of about 6-feet height and placed it behind it so that it could climb upon it, but also allowed some other canes to fall forward, so it is somewhat blousy vase shaped at the front with a climbing effect in the middle of the bed where I put the trellis. Bed is aboug 5-feet wide, so it falls over in one area and has about 3 feet within.

Mike, GC becoming a huge rose is just what I'm afraid of. The obelisk idea could work. I probably shouldn't move it after I just planted it...plus I planted it quite deeply with those long roots that Pickering plants have...so I'm afraid I'd damage it getting it out.

Joanna, I think that weeping means that the canes droop downward in a cascading effect. I've seen GC grown like this naturally and it is beautiful...but probably much bigger than what I need.

Luanne, I have the David Stone DVD and if the bush remains where it is w/o support, I will definitely prune it to encourage it to be self-supporting. However, I wonder if pruning it quite severely each year to keep it smaller (4' or so) would be okay for it.

Patricia, I like that creative idea...it just might work for my GC.

I have 6 plants all together that I whack down (24 inches maybe) each year and they make tidy nice bushes this way.
Very manageable.. you may need to prune them back again a bit in the summer, but I havent found any detrement to pruning them back pretty short. I could probably go shorter .. but I never have the heart to do it.

Shelly, the past few years my GC has been huge, like 8 or 9' tall and nearly as wide. This spring, I pruned it to a much more manageable size. It was simply too big for its spot. And, I thought, well, let's see what happens. It is totally self supporting and about a few feet wide x 4 or 5' tall right now. It will grow taller during the summer. But, it was perfectly fine with my pruning it hard. It's forming lots of buds now. It stands alone toward the front of a bed. It looks much better in its spot.

In my zone it freezes to the ground every year and barely reaches two feet at the peak of the season.

Envy is such an unpleasant emotion....

Mine doesn't freeze all the way to the ground, but it gets pretty close. Comes back every year to make a shrub about three feet tall and wide. I think it would prefer to live somewhere wetter; English roses generally don't seem to do well here.
