How can I get a garden ready before I move in?

Hi everyone.

I've read lots and lots of posts but I'm still struggling with this: we are buying an old victorian with a nice big garden. It has been mostly neglected for awhile. This summer there will be renovations to the house and we won't be living there. Are there things I could do to help the garden along while I am not there to be working? For example, there is a raised bed that has been used for vegetables in the past that is right next to the house: it has a lot of weeds coming up in it. Should I cover it with black plastic and bake the weeds so I can plant lettuce come late August?

Should I try to get some compost to toss over everything?

Or do I just need to wait and dream and plan and NEXT spring I can get started?

Any thoughts would be helpful!
