Planting around a stump
Comments (2)Today I spent the day planting around my tree stump. Last year I had a huge Spruce cut down. Too close to the house, so it had to go. Anyway, I planted 3 Mugo pines and I put an angel on the stump. Mulched the whole area, its a big circle. It looks so nice. I don't think you have to do anything. Just plant what you want. You could put newspaper under your mulch to keep the weeds down. It will be fine and the stump will disappear under the paper and mulch....See Moredaylilies around a tree stump?
Comments (0)My husband had to cut down a pine tree that split. Can I plant daylilies around it, or will the decomposing stump make it very difficult for the daylilies to get the nutrients they need to grow nicely? Thanks for your help!!...See MoreLost a tree, must we dig out stump to plant new one?
Comments (27)B, we're in agreement on one thing (I think), that Armillaria is a virulent plant pathogen across many genera, and as such, is something to take into account. In your experience though, do you find lots (Hard to define"lots", I know) of cases where random landscape plant stumps are infected? I'm not discountiing the existence of this species of fungus out in the landscape. Heck, I've seen-and eaten-my share of "honeys". But it's still just a rarity in most home landscape situations, I find. The occasional street tree will succumb. That is, after other factors have rendered said tree low on defenses. But so far as I'm aware, we're not awash in Armillaria......are we? +oM...See MorePlanting a new tree directly in an old rotted-out stump?
Comments (8)i doubt you will get a direct specific answer ..... so you are left to speculation ... which we enjoy ... i say ... just do it ... and become the local expert ... i would do nothing larger than a second year seedling ... and i would use some sort of sandy soil inside ..;.. you are presuming.. what you are calling compost.. is fully finished rotted wood ... non rotted wood is not good at all .... as it can leech nitrogen.. as well as being a water management problem ... keep in mind.. when this is seen in the forest ... it is probably under a canopy of other large trees.. and probably rather shaded .... might not work as easily.. in full sun ... again... water management ... ken...See Moremad_gallica (z5 Eastern NY)
