What did you plant last year that was a star?

I planted Veronica "Eveline" last year and it turned out to be an absolutely gorgeous plant. Very long blooming, always looked fantastic. All three are already bulking up nicely.

I have it paired with Lychnis coronaria (rose campion), Salvia plumosa and Geranium Patricia. The geranium was also new last year, but it was a small start planted late. I'm hoping it takes off this year.

I love Salvia Caradonna. With deadheading, it bloomed for an absolutely ridiculously long time. I think I looked out in November and was astonished that there were still blooms. It's beautiful too, especially with the dark stems (that became less pronounced as the summer went on, but still.)

Baptisia (False indigo) although I didn't plant it last year but the year before. I planted it from a 4" pot and it was too small to flower at that time...and last summer it grew to about 24" with beautiful foliage but not one bloom. Right now it is blooming beautifully and making me wish I had planted more.

Pics #1&2 look like the rapacious Campanula Rapunculoids. If it is, and you let it be for a short while yet, it should produce a tall raceme of lavender blue bells... although some find them pretty enough, you'll want to pull it up before the flowers come even remotely close to maturing and scattering hundeds of seeds. If I'm right, this will wreck havoc in your garden and you'll be pulling them (like I am) for years to come.

Definitely feel last year was responsible for this year's losses. The garden struggled as the drought went on and on last summer. Followed by no snow cover for half of the winter. And these are plants that I lost... Japanese Jack in the Pulpit 2 Pulmonaria Ã¢ÂÂBertram AndersonÃ¢ÂÂ A few crocus but not sure why Euphorbia Agastache Ã¢ÂÂAvaÃ¢ÂÂ Penstemon Ã¢ÂÂPikeÃ¢ÂÂs Peak PurpleÃ¢ÂÂ Aquilegia Ã¢ÂÂDragonflyÃ¢ÂÂ All but a few reseeded Verbena bonariensis Most of those plants are iffy in my zone anyway, except the aquilegia, crocus, and pulmonaria. But I've had them for at least 5+ years without losing them. But, right now my garden is rebounding from all the rain I've gotten. Due to large mature trees surrounding my property in neighbor's yards, my garden can handle a lot of rain, better than it can drought.

Something I propagated this year were 18 cuttings from my Walker's Low catmint. The other day I decided to look at them to see if they had rooted and 3 out of the 4 I looked at had really nice big healthy roots so I transplanted them into the garden. I think most of the others will have roots as well but it started pouring rain so I quit! Yah, I'm a wimp, but the mosquitoes came out full force when it started raining. I'll definitely take more cuttings next spring as I'd like to edge some of the beds with it, especially my rose garden.

Thank you, Mayland. I always mulch with pine straw. Here, it seems to be a bit more economical and I've got a whole lot of mulching to do. I think that last year I ended up buying about 50-60 bales of straw. I probably won't do that much this year; I'm not going to put as much in the back as I did in the front. I have even more azaleas on the side (to the left in the picture) and in the back (you can barely see a coral and pink azalea on the right-hand side of the picture). I have been sick about losing so many, too. The 7-8 I lost are just in the front. I haven't really gotten out and counted all the ones in the back, although there's not as many lost in those areas. I thought about mulching with bark in 2006 but there were rumors that some of the bark we got here came from the "Katrina" area trees that were chipped up and some came with termites. I don't know if that was true or not, but didn't want to take the chance, so we stayed with straw. I planted four small rhododendrons two years ago and they did beautifully the first year. I thought they would be fine last year as long as I kept them watered on our alotted days...I lost all four of them. The funny thing is that I planted a larger one last year and it lived! At least I hope it is going to live...this will be its second year like the other four were and I've found a few dead limbs on it. Esh_ga...finding those dead limbs on my year-old planted rhodie...does that mean I'm probably looking at losing the whole plant, or do I just need to clip off the dead limbs and pray for survival? It's such a pretty white rhodie and I don't want to lose it! I have just recently heard that you don't need to amend the holes too much...I'm glad you mentioned that so now I know it's true. What was the older saying, "$100 hole for a $10 plant?" LOL! Thanks! Beverly

I second leafy02's baptisia and will add gaura lindheimeri/wand flower. I also planted baptisia from a 4 inch pot about 3 years ago and it bloomed last year for the first time--absolutely, flat-out gorgeous. I have several around the garden at various stages of growth including a pure white one and Twilight Prairie Blues. All should bloom this year. The gaura was an impulse--winter sowed seeds from Hazzard's Greenhouse and they just bloomed non-stop the whole season, right up into November. By lucky chance I planted one beside Russian sage and what a combination!

I also have Veronica 'Eveline' and it is an outstanding plant with a long bloom time. I had some difficulty pairing other perennials because of its red-purple-lilac color,but settled on Sedum 'autumn joy'(it's only green when the Veronica is blooming, white feverfew, Sedum 'matrona', Lambs Ears,deep magenta Dianthus and Sorbet 'Orchid' violas.

That baptisia is stunning. I am going to try to find I place to plant some.

gardenweed, gaura sadly doesn't seem to overwinter for me. Too bad, because your combo is very pretty.

denninmi, I'm also a huge fan of black and blue salvia. The flowers are an incredible color.

laceyvail, I actually grow salvia Eveline and veronica Eveline. Here's a picture of the veronica from July of last year:
