May is a green month in england

So, no roses yet, apart from the yellow Cantab and primula at the allotment. Madame G is just teasing us with colour while Graham Thomas and Mutabilis obstinately refuse to be seduced by sporadic bursts of sunlight.
The allotment has just bid farewell to the tulips and is also green and lush......just quivering with potential - it overflows in June (rose month in england).
Still, there is a rather good polemonium giving its all ....if the hulthemia will just fulfil its budding promise........

Your garden certainly looks green and lush. It's always a trade off. Some folks had an early bloom followed by hot weather. For three years our May was like yours. This year is the earliest bloom ever. What to expect next year?

Wow that is so lush..so English looking. Everything looks so manerly. It is obvious that you have showered oodles of hours on this garden. The color of the brick offsets the the green magnificently.
Camp, am I right that in my minds image your new acreage will be somewhat more wild, maybe eclectic looking?

VERY nice combination of colors and forms. It's lovely. I like the way you use mostly large clumps of plants too--that really helps give them more impact. I need to work on that as I tend to get one of everything rather than get a several of fewer plants. I love it. My general style is to get mostly desert adapted plants, and to try to contrast different colors and textures (blue leaf agave in front of very green-paddled opuntia, spiky hesperaloe poking up from floppy datura, etc), plus a few beds of clown's pants annuals with edging to differentiate them from the rest of the garden. You've got a great eye...I'd call your garden a cottage garden too--it really is lovely. Thanks for the eye candy. Cheerio, Grant

Warning Mike, a few is just the begining. It's a downhill slide into addiction after that - just ask 'almost hooked' who took a few of my divisions and now has over 200 plant in just over a year. I'm glad you spoke to Gary. He and Jack are great! I usually see Jack at the plant sale on Bainbridge Island in the early spring. I won't be going this year and I will miss him. He always talks me into a plant I didn't even realize I needed. It always turns out he's right! You are very lucky that you will be able to actually GO to New Hampshire Hostas. One of these days my sister and I are going to go to Sebright Gardens in Oregon. It's probably a four hour trip from her house so we've not done it yet but we will. So many of my recent, new plants have come from there. We've been able to get plants in pots rather than having to be wrapped and shipped. That means they are more likely to be ready to be a feature in the garden. Glorious (in the "G's") and Lakeside Prophecy coming up are just two examples. Deb, you're avoiding cabin fever, I'm avoiding housework. Looking and working with pictures is the next best thing to actually being outside looking at the garden and moving things around. I'll post another "four months from now" collection for those of you that aren't bored with me yet.

I finished Dear Fahrenheit 451, Love and Heartbreak in the Stacks by Annie Spense. On the cover: A Librarian's love letters and breakup notes to the books in her life. Rather a silly premise but a fun read. Before that I read The Feather Thief by Kirk Wallace Johnson. I loved this. It's a true crime story of a 20 year old professional flautist who robs the British Museum of Natural History, taking 299 bird skins that date back to Darwin times. He then plans to sell them to professional and hobbyist fly-tiers for fishing and competition purposes. Not to diminish the import of the crimes, it was very funny in many spots. There was a well done section dedicated to natural history which makes me want to pull Origin of Species off the TBReR shelf if I can locate it. This one makes it into my top five lifetimes reads. If you like natural history, fly-fishing, quirky crimes or just an entertaining story, you're apt to like this. I couldn't put it down and am looking to buy a copy for my own Library.

jeanne, enjoy your time with your daughters and putting your husbands remains to rest. it will be a nice time for closure and rekindling at the same time. thanks for a great swap, don't worry about the prizes at all. as you can see, the prizes from April are still on their way... jayeanne, don't worry i won't send. i really thought they would be okay. im sure you know morning glories are hard to transplant but hopefully something sprouts for you. heidi, i am so glad you told us about the flower bomb idea. i am a borderline hoarder/collector and i have so so so many seeds i'm almost ready to stop swapping (but won't even dare to think of that! :) i even promised some local newbies i would send the seeds and i never did. i don't know why but i have had a total disconnect with gardening this year. in other news.... my youngest got accepted to a local competitive soccer league so i'm officially in over my head if i decide to accept that. good thing is we will be adding a driver to the family in July so she can help! last but not least, my eldest is graduating H.S. on saturday so both grandfathers are coming into town thursday/friday to get the weekend festivities going! (both grandmothers are recently deceased and will be greatly missed as he is the first grandchild on both sides!) hope everyone has a great weekend. and as i said above, I'm still "thinking" about what prizes to send for the April prizes, my brain is working in slow mode these days.

I hope you'll post pics of Mme Gregoire Staechelin when she's in full bloom! I've never seen her in person, but she always seems to be so photogenic.

England in May...can be exquisite...Campanula, can you guess the name of this old friend?...one of the first to bloom and has this month as part of it's namesake

Your wonderful allotments or "commons" are so civil. I wish our city planners had the imagination to have these areas set aside for us. This photo shows the old red brick row houses to the right, allotments in the center, and to the left was the Thames River...and across the street (behind me) was Kew Gardens.

Has the spring weather started to produce some heat units yet...I know you've had a wet go of it? Melissa, has the weather improved in central Italy? The reason why I ask is because I'm heading that way shortly.
