New: FOTESS May 2012 Swap - Snip and Share
Comments (126)Thanks for sharing the natives list, Heidi. I will be looking through it again and again. Ellie, so glad that package made it to you in time for you to try to root some things. Crazy mail service... I matched people so the package wouldn't have to travel so far and the one that made it to you quickly was from across the country. Makes you wonder, but I am just glad it got there. A few of my cuttings looked dead and got pulled out and tossed, but I am hopeful that many more will make it. Shurbs and things like that take longer to root than the soft stem plants. Our hot weather is upon us now though and the rain had stopped. It was nice when we had it. Now I am dragging my hoses and sprinklers around once again. Our daylilies are just fantastic this year. I really enjoy going out to see which ones are in bloom each day. Jeanne...See MoreNOV. Comments (46)Good morning, everyone! The Bingo words for today are: DEER and CODE TALKER. I'll update the full list for us again tomorrow. I found out there is a book about the Code Talkers. Many of you may already know this interesting part of history. I think I will look for the book because it sounds so interesting. "Throughout World War II, in the conflict fought against Japan, Navajo code talkers were a crucial part of the U.S. effort, sending messages back and forth in an unbreakable code that used their native language. They braved some of the heaviest fighting of the war, and with their code, they saved countless American lives." The book is: Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two by Jospeh Bruchac (Perhaps there are other books as well. This is the one I found listed. Windtalkers is a movie based on this same theme. Has anyone read the book or seen the movie?) I want to recheck the guesses and will post the winner and then people can guess for today if they like. One time a day for as many members as want to try it. No one has them all right yet. Jeanne...See MoreFOTESS: Non-Swap Month (Chat, Pictures, etc.)
Comments (51)Erica, what do you do with sorghum? I'm assuming it's more than for it's distinctive look--but I like the look! For us sorghum is to bulk up the cows! Thanks for the info about your cukes. So interesting. My mom fell a week ago and has compression fractures in her spine. Dr. told her she'd be in the hospital a month and then he sent her home 2 days later. She is up walking which I can hardly believe. I'm so happy, though! I had that moment when I became the parent and they became the kids. I sat down with my mom and told her I wanted her to get a machine that tested her blood sugar--you wear a patch and it beeps if your blood sugar gets too high or too low. This is the fourth time her bs got too low and she fell and hurt herself. She said, "Okay." My dad was hiding in the kitchen!!! He came in once he figured out my mom wasn't going to pitch a fit. Hiding in the kitchen!!!! Like a little kid! This week we went to the hearing for my husband's business. The state is trying to shut him down for a year. It's all political and I don't do well with politics--and corruption. I just wish we could all follow the rules. We won't know until the middle of September what will happen. For the time being, he can still work. My daughter started her senior year this week. Her best friend is living with us and it's been going well. I am going to have a half dozen princess pumpkins. I've got lots of Roma tomatoes. My dad has green pepper plants 4' tall full of peppers--king sized plants. My plants which I started in March in the house think they are Miss America plants. They wave to each other, are skinny but healthy, but have no desire to produce. I'm hoping for 2 cantaloupes to ripen and not get eaten by bugs....See MoreMay FOTESS Participation (Games and Photos for Group Members)
Comments (130)I'm so sorry, but it doesn't look like I will get to more plant part questions. Perhaps I can try it again one month when I am hostess again. Congratulations to Nicole who won our Gardener's Derby Game and to Emily who is clearly first in the Plant Parts Game. I'll get little prizes send out early in June. Thanks to everyone for posting comments, pictures, and participating! We continue to have storms off and on and the humidity these past few days has been horrid. I heard someone say it is so oppressive because of two air masses that came together - all I know is you can hardly stand to be outside. Meanwhile, I'm arranging more times to get roofers and other people out here to evaluate damage and schedule repairs. The roofers can return on Monday which is great. The back part of the roof hasn't been repaired yet and I started getting interior leaks which correspond with where they still need to do repairs. This tree episode has been a nightmare, but the services I dealt had some very nice people to deal with so that has been much appreciated. (However, I'm glad I called LOTS of them because here it is over 2 months later and I haven't even gotten a return call from some of the tree services. I know they are busy, but they need to leave a message or something about how backed up they are.) Here's a picture of my gladiolus that's in bloom today. My plants seem to have loved all the rain. Of course, we have very sandy soil so they don't stay waterlogged in it....See Morepinkiris
