Echo SRM 210 trimmer problem

Here is the problem for my echo srm 210 straight shaft trimmer; when the trimmer is idling i.e. the throttle is not engaged, the trimmer head will rotate by itself at an extremely slow speed. When I say slow a mean 45 degrees then slightly stop and then it will turn again etc.

Should I be concerned about this? is it normal? Could the problem get worse?

Its nothing to worry about. The idle screw is probably set a little high. I would leave it where it is, but you could turn the idle down a little to stop that from happening.

Just curious, why would you leave it here it is (the idle screw)?

Is there some advantage to have it idle higher?

well i'll tell ya this much,i was lookin for another weedeater and was going to go with what i've always used which is a t230 or t231 shin,but after reading these forums i decided on a echo 210.biggest mistake i ever made,have had it a week and used once on a small hillside with maybe a hours work and had problems with the head and carb in it surging so i took it back to be looked at and so far been 4 days in the shop and three days it was at home.it need another head and carb which they ordered but still its of no use to me and is costing me money from not having its use.next time i'll lision to myself and get what i know works and thats a shindaiwa.got two one is 3 years old and one 4 years old that have never seen the shop and never even needed a spark plug yet and run as new still and i use them at least 4 hours a day 5 days a week and the echo didnt make it one day..lol..spend the extra 100 bucks and get somethign that dont take up shop space..

I can't say the same about the Echo products, some people report getting 15+ years, but the SRM210 is very difficult to start. Mine worked for 4 years no problems, then it wouldnt start, I spent $60 and had the carburator rebuilt and the plug changed, it worked for a season. Then the next season I had the same tune up/cleaning done. It worked but had little torque and would bog down in 12" brush or weeds. Now, a season later, it wont start again. Now, the small size chainsaw I bought for $199. It worked for 6 hours then wouldnt start. I took it to the authorized warranty dealer and Echo refused to pick up the repairs stating normal wear and tear, furthermore the unit was leaking the bar chain oil. I took it back to big orange and since I had it for more than 30 days they refused to take it back. So I am done with Echo products, they charge too much for products and their warranty is worthless. BTW, just to let you know I have had lawnmowers for 16+ years that are working fine and I do regular preventive maintenance.

Only tip I have is that when the line doesn't feed after thumping it on the ground - to press the button and pull some line out with your hand. This again proves my point, that manuals are written by people who know how to do it, and assume that it works for "us people." I found it hard to believe your comment that there was nothing in the manual about the line feed, but you are 100 percent correct.

Fellows, I am thinking of replacing the stock trimmer head that came on my SRM-210i with an upgrade.... having to cut little lengths of line is driving me crazy. Was looking at two Echo replacements - the U-turn and the Echomatic Plus. Not a lot of info on the packages one way or the other. Which would you go with and why?

No advantage to having it set higher. If you turn down the idle it will just take a little longer for the trimmer head to start spinning. You most likely will never notice the difference. As long as the head is not constantly spinning its ok where it is, but if you would rather turn the idle down go for it. No harm in doing so.

Now that I think of it, I went through about 4 tanks of gas/oil before this problem started happening. (head spinning by itself very slowly).

Would that mean the idle screw got tighter by itself?

Could this have something to do with the breakin period for the engine (which echo says takes 2 - 3 tanks of gas)?

No, what that means is that the engine has finally "broken" in and with less friction internally, the engines idle speed has increased somewhat allowing the clutch to engage. Find the idle screw and turn in about 1/8 turn counterclockwise or just until the head stops turning.
