How big does MRS John Laing get?

Does MRS. John Laing get? (now that we established the rose is only named for the wife hehe) Semi arid zone 5b-6a. How does it like being pruned to keep under control? Does it NEED control?

I saw one yesterday and I am giving it the old 'hairy eyeball' and thinking really hard about it so if you smell smoke don't worry it's just me.

Supposedly about 4-5 ft tall--at least, that is what I'm planning on for my three new Mrs. John Laings that I planted this spring. Can't wait to see them bloom!

Another reason I picked it is because it isn't a very wide rose--more vertical.

Then, of course, there are the large blooms and good fragrance and disease resistance. I'm really looking forward to this beauty.

Mine is about 3.5' tall, but then I usually have to prune quite hard in spring. This year it is starting out with about 6" of cane. Like Kate said, it does grow in an upright manner, but I would add that it also DOES sucker! (At least my own-root one does!) It doesn't run far, but it likes to push out beyond the area I had planned for it.

garydewater: That's about 1/2 the price as a new one and 135 hours is about 3 years of average homeowner use (about 40 - 50 hours/year). If it is in good condition and not been abused it sounds like a pretty good deal. You did not mention what year model it is. I have an acre and 1/4 myself and usually rack up about 40 - 50 hours/year depending on what projects I'm working on. I mow, dethatch, aerate, overseed, pull a cart loaded with rocks, firewood, etc... and mulch my leaves in the fall pulling a lawn sweeper to collect them. You can usually save a bunch of $$$ buying a good used quality tractor. Just make sure it has been well taken care of by the previous owner. If it looks rough it probably is rough. An engine coated in oil, grass clippings, etc..., faded paint, cracked seat and weathered plastic components typically indicate that it was left outside in the elements and not well cared for. I have Louise next to mine. It has a big (OK huge) footprint although It did have major dieback this year with our late frost. Mrs J.L. punches out some beautiful blooms and it is hard to pass on, although it is subject to BS. The waaaabits have a major love affair with La Reine despite cages within cages. I do not know, they are all good choices, perhaps different in your zone as has been mentioned. Have fun! F.L.

Of the ones on this list, I only have a handy picture of Comte de Chambord. I have had Reine des Violettes in the past and also have Mme. Pierre Oger. In general, I would say that these groups of roses, the hybrid perpetuals, Bourbons, and Portlands all benefit from a cold period for rest. If you do not have a cold period, then you would be better served by the hybrid chinas, teas, and Noisettes. Most of the old garden roses on your lists do have a nice smell. Comte de Chambord has a good fragrance to it, and so does Mme Pierre Oger. A picture of Comte de Chambord: I hope this helps a bit.

Hi! Mari I have never been to Florida before but I think your climate is similar to mine but here a bit warmer like you said. So is your Yolande d'Aragon growing tall very fast any bloom yet? Hi! Linda I used to see picture of Yolande d'Aragon climbing on wall a lot of bloom all along the canes as you said. Is so beautiful I would to grow mine like that too. Actually here in Bangkok not much people do grow roses and here have a lot of hybrid teas some climbing and very new for David Austin rose. I only found Golden Celebration, Evelyn and Glamis Castle. For old rose I think I have grown some but hardly to tell their name because nurseries in Thailand never put the name tag on their roses. Usually here only sale rose in container or pot not for bare root. So I do order roses from Holland nurseries. I used to grow La Reine Victoria I think she can get rust easily she very weak and gone. I never see any bloom of her and she is one of my favorite pink cup shapes. I have just order Mme Isaac Pereire and Louise Odier from Holland nurseries. I am still waiting for them very exciting. I SPed my last year (actually gave it away), and hard pruned it before this. But before pruning it was 8 feet high an approx 6 feet wide. Long felxible canes, easy to train on an arbor.

Olga, what led you to dump MJL? Was yours grafted or own root?
Comments are appreciated as I'm considering this rose for spring planting.

We grew it some years ago (and this was when we were still spraying).
It never got over 3 ft., here in Coastal SoCalif (which was OK) but that
wasn't the problem.
The PROBLEM was that as soon as new leaves opened, they began to rust.
And where they were not rusted, they mildewed.
It bloomed, but the plant always looked like the devil, and it is gone.
I hope it is better somewhere else.

My MJL was grafted plant from Pickering. It is a great rose with fantastic fragrance and fast repeat. However, it REQUIRES spraying from BS in my climate. Gets terrible BS otherwise.
