I need a climbing/vigorous rose for my mother

Alright here is the situation I am faced with......don't mind my ATV...haha....just look at the deck in the background. As you can see, she planted some random roses....no clue what they are....on the side of the deck(unfortunately north side) in the hopes that a rose would grow up and sprawl out and fill out the side of it all the way across the railing on the side of the deck.

Those roses aren't quite vigorous enough. While it is on the north side, it does get enough sun as soon as the rose gets tall enough to get past the bottom of the deck. This new climbing rose will be planted in between those 2 roses. So here is my predicament:

-Needs to be relatively disease resistant

-Needs to have good rebloom....colors don't matter, but she tends to favor rainbow or mixed/multi-color roses.

-Vigorous enough to spread out between along the railings

-Thorns are fine, but the less thorny the better

I've already had experience with New Dawn and Zephirine Drouhin, but New Dawn is a bit too thorny. Any suggestions?...don't care if it's english, antique, or modern, although I tend to favor old blooms forms. :) Ultimate goal is for it to sprawl out left and right and fill out the entire side of the deck, but I'm a realist and realize that's probably not happening so something vigorous that will just sprawl left and right and fill out part of the deck.

I realize you're asking for a climbing rose, but I'd put Cherry Parfait in there. It is a bicolor, always in bloom, and vigorous as the dickens in good soil. It is a floribunda, and might need a touch of spray once in a while, but overall a tough rose. I'm judging the height of the deck by the trash cans. A mature plant should be about as tall as that.

Jeffcat, Veilchenblau is hardy in your zone and nearly thornless. It's a spring flowering plant with semi single blooms in larger clusters, but it won't bite anyone badly when they're up close and personal. With one or two of these planted to cover the railing, you could then plant the bushes with the contrasting colors and flowers you want in front of them, using the climber as the back drop. Kim

Is it tougher to move a plant in a climate that has no true winters? Perhaps the plants get too big--the plants can't stand the huge reduction in size once people get around to moving them. Or does the winter reset the biological clock of a rose? A large shrub or climbing root will have a much larger root system than a Hybrid Tea, even though both are on Dr. Huey. I just dug up a Tropicana that was in the ground for perhaps 5 years. The anchor roots were pretty thick, but probably not a whole lot longer than when I first planted them. On the other hand, a big shrub can grow roots several feet long. Transplanted bushes often grow better once I've eliminated the tree root competition. I also carried off a 5 gallon pail of invasive tree roots to the compost pile. I typically move as much of the plant as I can. Even though I'm I stroke survivor who is just 5' 2", I can move a pretty big bush.

I have a similar question - in late July (Ohio) when it is obviously not dormant I want to dig up my Desmond Tutu rose bush and bring it to my parents in humid, hot Houston. Is flying with it as a bareroot a possibility since it's growing season? It was a bareroot plant 2 years ago with bigger roots so keeping it potted in soil is not an option. It's alive and healthy but still relatively small compared to some of my others. I'd be flying with it so it will be faster than Fed Ex next day, would be same day (but adding time on both ends to dig up then plant, just like in shipping). I wonder if it will survive in my carryon suitcase without soil , since ice packs are not allowed due to the liquids rule. Maybe I should do a checkin bag for a larger bag and add ice packs. Maybe I can water liberally for a few days before, soak and wrap damp brown paper packing material around the roots? Cuttings are not in consideration since the rose is likely still under patent, and even if it wasn't, there is no time. I could dig it up tomorrow as my sister's passing thru from Ohio to Texas... but I'd have to go dig it up and I don't think her husband and her want to drive with a rose in addition to their kids, or care for it in Dallas till they can go to Houston. I guess no one can really say whether it will survive or not, wonder if I should take a chance or if it's too much of a hassle. Or Desmond can be the sacrificial lamb to see if this works.

Ramblers pretty much by definition are once bloomers. They resemble lilacs or azaleas in that they only bloom once a year, but the show is quite amazing. They can also get big. 20 ft canes aren't out of the question. There is currently a thread about them in the Antique Rose forum, and yes, while not all those roses will grow here, I do know other varieties that can look like that here. The Explorer climbers repeat. Quadra and Captain Samuel Holland repeat well once established, and are extremely resistant to blackspot. Blackspot is another major rose issue around here. For example, Lavender Lassie blackspots badly, and requires regular spraying to do much of anything.

Not clothes pins, ever. Graham Thomas has canes that canker easily and keeping a year or two year old cane in close contact with a fence would be a place that water would accumulate next to where there was damage to the cane from wind moving it against the fence. A gentle use of jute string loosely around the canes/stems and then a second knot holding it to the fence. You are in a zone where winter won't kill the canes back?

I'm not altogether sure about the zone issues, but if you planted Veilchenblau as Kim suggested and added Renae (climbing polyantha), you would have flushes of pink mixed in with the wonderful wonderful mauve of Veilchenblau. Renae is thornless and very vigorous here in zone 9; HMF says she's good to Zone 6B, but I have no idea how accurate that is.

I have both roses on their own roots and both are healthy and vigorous. Renae reproduces herself so freely that I have dug up and passed on several of her offspring....

Climbing Devoniensis (The Magnolia Rose) is own root and will take a year or two to get going, but once it does it explodes and can cover something 12 feet high.

Climbing Angel Face has been really prolific for me.

Jude the Obscure again, took two years to get going, then really set in nicely.

Thanks for the help guys. I will look into some of them. I need something that is more than a once bloomer though. I might order a couple Pretty Jessica's as well from RU since mine died last year and I need a couple small roses for an entrance on the little rose garden I made for my mother.

Rosarium Uetersen is cold hardy enough and would get large enough, but it is flowering barbed wire. Talk about THORNS! I don't know if Cl. Teas would be cold hardy enough, and though I LOVE Renae, I don't know if she'd be hardy enough there, either.

For thornless, eventual large size, FRAGRANCE and ever blooming character as well as being able to tolerate shade, Annie Laurie McDowell (my seedling, available from Burlington) will fill the bill beautifully. Renae is trashed for not being "reliably cold hardy", though it's far more so than originally reported, and Annie Laurie McDowell is a self seedling of her. Check Help Me Find for photos of Annie Laurie McDowell growing in GERMANY. She's offered for sale in The Netherlands. Would that be cold hardy enough? I don't know. My "winter protection" is making sure I keep the roses cut below six or seven feet so the winds don't break them and making sure they remain sufficiently watered when the rains don't happen. Otherwise, I just continue cutting flowers to keep the plants small enough to be wind resistant.
