Butter Wrappers and Q Tips for the Worms?
Comments (6)If the butter wrapper is wax paper it might have a better use as a fire starter. All cardboard and cotton Q tips would certainly breakdown. I however would not like to purchase vermicastings and find one. Nor would I like to be working with my vermicompost and find one. Pretty much after using one I never want to see it again. Maybe wrap the Q tips with the butter wrapper and use it to start the next wood stove fire. I'm also not a big fan of vermicomposting dryer lint or vacuum bag contents....See MoreIn the footsteps of Mom
Comments (30)Once while visiting my grandmother, my youngest daughter (around 6 or 7 at the time), who is super picky about potato salad, was watching Granny mix up potato salad. My daughter stood and watched for a while and then whispered to me, "Mama, did you teach Granny to make potato salad?" I laughed and told her, "No, Granny taught my mama and then my mama taught me." I think there are probably generations of mamas in our family that cooked, not using exact recipes, just a bit of this, etc. My children are always on me to write my recipes down and while I know I should, I don't have recipes! We somehow learned from one another and we cook alike. Sometimes people will act so pleasantly surprised at some ingredient in one of our "family" dishes but we just thought that was the way you did it. Our family's world is expanding food wise. I had never tasted a taco until I was almost out of high school. My older sister made them for us. She introduced us to many new foods. My Granny was always collecting recipes and while she cooked much from scratch her own way, she loved trying new recipes. She traveled across Florida in a covered wagon, cooking over a camp fire as a young girl. She was very adaptable and loved using her microwave and other "new fangled equipment". My Granny is gone on but my Mama is still with us, Thank God! Mamas and Grannies are such blessings! Susan...See MoreMy pic of cutting board liner plus tip
Comments (60)I guess everywhere is different. Here there is no city garbage pick up, although Ashley has it in a town 15 miles away. She pays for garbage pick up just like she pays for city water, she does not have a choice of services. They also have recycling, she has special bins for that and yard waste goes by the curb on a special day, it's included in her monthly garbage/recycling bill. Things like branches and leaves get ground up and then residents can get the resulting mulch at no cost to them. Here I have to hire my own garbage pick-up, I have my choice of 3 or 4 companies that do that. Recycling is free, but I have to take it to the recycling trailers and sort it myself. Not a problem, there are trailers clearly labelled and the bins include plastic grocery bags, milk bottles (no lids), newspaper, office paper and magazines, glass (again, remove lids) clear plastic, colored plastic, cardboard, styrofoam, metal. All items must be clean, no food residue. If the item can be washed, it can be recycled, if it can't be washed (like cardboard boxes) and contains food residue, it can't be recycled. Some plastic bags were accepted for a while, now none of them are other than the plastic grocery bags. No place for yard waste, we can still burn leaves and branches curbside, which I hate, nice days in the fall you about get smoked out of your house by all the neighbors burning leaves. Compost is something I do myself. As I said, most kitchen scraps become chicken food, the few things that I can't take there get added to my "compost pile" at the farm and is then spread on the garden the following year. The compost pile consists mostly of the contents of the calf pens and chicken coop which I let compost for a year before using. Annie...See MoreBaking 'grease' (to grease the pans)
Comments (14)I had this saved from a while ago as "Pan Release" on my hard drive. It works great! Always good to share info like this with folks who might have missed it! The original recipe is from recipezaar, and one of the notes said that "for baking recipes using chocolate you may use 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder in place of white flour or 1/4 cup each cocoa powder and flour --- this may be increased or decreased sucessfully just make certain that all three ingredients are the same amounts or the mixture will not work as well." NOTE: You can make half a recipe and it works well. Some folks have kept this in the fridge for a loooooong time, and it's still good! Recipe: 1/2 cup corn oil or canola oil or vegetable oil 1/2 cup vegetable shortening, room temperature (Crisco shortening is good) 1/2 cup all-purpose flour Place all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer beat until mixture has increased in volume slightly and resembles marshmallow cream. Place in a container with a lid and store on the counter or in a cupboard (in hot weather it may be refrigerated). The mixture tends to separate slightly upon sitting in your cupboard or refrigerator so mix before using, then brush pans using a pastry brush or a clean paper towel.
