Lovely day at Vintage Gardens

Today was a wonderful day at Vintage. The garden looked great. We had an excellent turnout this month as we finished up weeding, fertilizing, and mulching the potted roses. Talk about a pot ghetto.....

Then of course came the traditional potluck and all the rose chat. The volunteers try to outdo themselves each time (though we cheated with bakery cookies this time). Unfortunately Tom and I had to leave early this time. We found it painful to tear ourselves away. Next time we will be sure to allow lots of time to visit with our friends.

Don't know that any of us Sacramentans will be there, Luanne, but hope that your day is wonderful. October's a busy month for us, and we have so much to do in the cemetery. Saturday's our main work day, so it's hard to get away. I'm coordinating a garden tour on Oct 18th, and everybody is working on the Lantern Tours for the following weekend. October is peak season for cemeteries, and it's an added bonus that the roses will be in fall flush, too! I'll miss seeing everybody, and spending time in that wonderful garden. Wondering what is going on with this? I just saw this post (while looking for details about his annual open gardens) and the link to the newsletter seems to be down/broken. Gregg's garden is worthy of non-profit status, it's an absolute treasure, and I'd love to find out more information on how people can help.

Tough love in the garden day

Karen - if I use the hose it currently takes 4.5 hours to water all of the flowers and veg plants. It's about 7 hours with the watering can but I usually split that up over two days. I'm really lucky that we've had spring rains after three years of drought and this year (now know as the year of the insane winter sowing) has been our best growing year in over 5 years. If there ever was a year for the big garden expansion this certainly was it. I expect to spend future years just happily enjoying my perennials and direct sowing my most cooperative annuals. I'll probably still WS a few things but not on anywhere near the scale as this year. It's not like we have any yard left for more plants anyway. :) Lynda

We've had a stretch of several lovely days here - frosty but once the morning fog burns off, wonderfully sunny and clear and eventually even semi-balmy, temperature wise. What a difference a couple of weeks makes! Unfortunately, I had to work through most of them, but did get out for a bit on Saturday. Dotty, I have no idea what bulk soil/amendment suppliers are available in your area, but pretty much any type of mulch you like should be available through them now. Or you could research tree services in the area who might have wood chips for you, and most likely for free.

Gean, It's not Carolyn Parker but another Carolyn, Sanders. She's not that comfortable with the computer. That's one reason she's not on Garden Web. I do hope you can come sometime. We'd love to see you there.
It was a great day. When friends get together for a purpose like this it is more special and meaningful.
We even got a new member yesterday, Kathleen, who lives in Antioch.

Oh, thanks, Pam; I don't know any of the people except by email or online so it's easy for me to confuse names. I am prone to that anyway!

My kids are growing up so maybe sometime I can make it. I'd really love to meet faces to go with names and gardens I know only here. Gean

I am on the list but only come occasionally because Dirt Days are usually on Saturday, and I'm consumed by tasks at the Sacramento cemetery on that day. My intentions continue to be good about coming and I'm really glad to hear that it was a good day. Preserving that collection is really important to me.
