Gregg Loweryâs Garden (aka Vintage Garden) Becomes Nonprofit

Gregg Lowery is in the process of turning his private garden into a nonprofit in order to preserve the extensive rose collection amassed there. This will be a long process, but the first steps have been taken. I think there could be a bright future ahead for the garden. I'm so pleased to have a small part in helping.

This garden does indeed have a bright future. It will need the love and support of all old rose lovers to succeed. Luckily, it already has a great group of Dirt Day volunteers, which help to keep it going. We are all working hard to make this happen and believe in a favorable outcome.

I bought these four: I'm not that familiar with roses and couldn't tell you what they look like by name so I picked based on the names not knowing much about the rose. I figured crimson glory was red, American heritage sounded good and patriotic, Texas centennial, we are in Texas this year, and spiced coffee is always good. Lol HTCrimson Glory HTAmerican Heritage HT Texas Centennial Ht Spiced Coffee And all 10 Ferdy for a hedge. Although I'm not sure where the hedge will go yet. LOL!!! If you look at pics of Ferdy hedges online they are stunning.

Ease up guys, Gregg hasn't closed yet and may not. We should all support his nursery, buy roses for a friend, buy his rose book for a friend. Don't have any friends? Offer a stranger a band from Vintage, then you'll have a friend. If you are angry and depressed, why not take it out on the public gardens who have lost interest in growing and displaying his roses and old garden roses in general? Some of our most famous collections ( I can only speak for the current status of east coast collections) need a kick in the ***. They are letting the rose collections fall into the hands of the "Knockout" queens. Write your local botanic garden president. If you believe in Gregg, he will appreciate this support as well. stephen

Well...I am very sad, and there's only one thing I can do to combat depression; I will turn to gratitude for what I have received from Vintage, and a pouring out of love to Gregg and Gita. First to them, for they've both been so kind to me over the phone and through emails....I've never met them but they have a place in my heart. Then the roses! Ah what beauty they've brought to the abbey. Cymbaline, Halloween, Miss Atwood, Souvenir de Pierre Notting, Marechal Niel, Maman Cochet, White Maman Cochet, Etoile de Lyon...and friends, I'm only scratching the surface here...Huntington Pink Tea, Mrs. Foley Hobbs, William R. Smith (Best clone in the world!), Mrs. B.R. Cant, Mme. Berkeley, Mme. Lambard, Condesa de Sastago, Devoniensis, Alliance Franco-Russe... This is nowhere near exhaustive...but I am filled with joy every day as I walk through the gardens and see these plants, put in with my own hands as tiny bands, now towering 5-8 feet high and some 12 feet wide. Mme. Berkeley! I thought she'd never put on heft...and now, what a giant plant. I just had a dinner party to attend last night, and brought an armful of Etoile de Lyon, Maman Cochet and William R. Smith roses to my hosts, all from Vintage. How blessed we are at the abbey for the years of selfless service Gregg and Gita have given us all. Thank you many times over - your legacy will live in my gardens forever.

Wondering what is going on with this? I just saw this post (while looking for details about his annual open gardens) and the link to the newsletter seems to be down/broken.

Gregg's garden is worthy of non-profit status, it's an absolute treasure, and I'd love to find out more information on how people can help.

I thought with the closing of Vintage that this might be a good time to bump this thread up. The more people who are involved with The Friends of Vintage Roses the better the chance of this amazing collection surviving.

I would definitely want to be involved. Joanne, I have sent you an email with my e-address. My son is stationed in California with the Navy and perhaps when I visit, I could come help out at the gardens.
