Shindaiwa T20 string trimmer runs better upside down?

It's always difficult to get this T20 to run, but once warmed up it will run ok for a while. But after five minutes or so it will act like it's starved for fuel and shut off...unless I turn it upside down. If I do that just right, upside down for 30 seconds or so, then I can go back to right side up and it will work for a while until the same proceedure repeats itself. Sometimes it will run for many minutes, but always ends up starting to shut off which I can usually cure by turning it upside down. Sometimes when it shuts off, it won't start for a while, unless I use starting fluid (such as SureStart ether).

I've done the usual things, replaced/rebuilt the carb kit, cleaned out the muffler and made sure the exhaust outlet isn't plugged, adjusted it a million times. Replaced the fuel filter, run it without a fuel filter, run it directly from a hose to a tank of gas.

Since it seems to run ok when I connect a hose directly to a tank of gas, I suspect a problem with the fuel tank/breather system. But I don't exactly know how this works and what is most critical (ie, could a minute crack in the plastic tank affect the running, does the fuel cap gasket have anything to do with breathing...).

Could someone suggest how I would troubleshoot for this kind of problem, and especially what I need to check in the fuel tank system.

Forgot to mention, I've also cleaned, replaced, and run it without the air filter...this hasn't affected this problem.

You should take the muffler off and clean the exhaust port and the muffler spark arrester screen to complete the maintenance.

It is common for the new trimmer to run better up side down. But yours is an old model and since you have adjust and clean the carb, running too lean might not be the problem.

If the gas cap have issue on the vacuum, when it start choking, loosen the gas cap to see it make the difference. If so, look into the gas cap.

Also jiggle the spark plug wire with a wooden stick ( not pencil as graphy conducts) and see whether you can change it.

If all else fail, open the carb and clean one more time, but this time, get a can of compressed air in computer store and blow dry all the little openings and parts before putting it all back together and see what happened.

I own a Troy Bilt TB475 which is a 26cc 4 cycle version trimmer for last 4 years. It start very easy, 2 pull max. It work well. For a while, I use it only ones every 2 months. I had it die on me once and I have to change the carb.(I got one from an old motor) It start working again. I am almost sure it is because I don't use it enough and I do not drain gas out after use and let it sit for months. It works a whole lot better than a Craftsman cheap trimmer I had before. It really smells a lot better than 2 stroke and quieter. I am planning to buy a new, more fancy ones( No better than it's a toy to me!!! 4 years is a very old toy). I have an Echo hedge trimmer HC150. It does not start as easy and smells bad. I know I know, everyone like Echo!!! It does smell!!! Takes 7 to 8 pulls to start. I open the motor, it is a half crank. I know people don't like it. I don't know why, all the very expensive model plane glow engine use half crank. They are very high performence, run up to 16000RPM. They can be over 10cc. I actually bought a used engine on Ebay and play with it(Toy!!) The housing is made of stronger alloy than all the other brands ( Echo, Shindaiwa, Stihl). Usually those crankcase are made of very soft material, you can break it off like plastic. Not the Troy Bilt. It is a 2 ring design, inside does look cheap, the connecting rod is made of stamped steal and the crank sheft is made of few thin piece revided together. But who is to say mill out is better. One of the most reliable gun UZI is made of stamped steal!!! Don't tell them they are no good. the new TB525 has more from what I heard.

When you're trimming against a wall or (especially) posts, keep the speed low. This will make the line bend against the wall/post/whatever rather than hitting it while the line is held out with centripetal force. If the line can't cut what it runs into, then the force applied to the line will be much higher, often causing it to break if the rpm is too high. If the line is allowed to "wrap around" (that's how it's described in my trimmer's manual) solid objects, it will almost never break. I don't lose any noticeable amount of line when going along fences, foundations, trees, etc. by following this advice. You really shouldn't need anywhere close to the maximum power your engine can put out to cut grass or normal weeds. Using only as much power as is necessary to cut means debris doesn't fly as far or as hard (nothing gets stuck in clothes or skin), you use less fuel, make less noise, and break less line. I use the Rapid Loader head and find it very convenient. Just carry some extra pieces of line in your pocket. Leave the trimmer running, put it on the ground, and swap the lines out. Very quick. Since there are no moving parts (besides the clamps inside the head), nothing can screw up.

I can't say the same about the Echo products, some people report getting 15+ years, but the SRM210 is very difficult to start. Mine worked for 4 years no problems, then it wouldnt start, I spent $60 and had the carburator rebuilt and the plug changed, it worked for a season. Then the next season I had the same tune up/cleaning done. It worked but had little torque and would bog down in 12" brush or weeds. Now, a season later, it wont start again. Now, the small size chainsaw I bought for $199. It worked for 6 hours then wouldnt start. I took it to the authorized warranty dealer and Echo refused to pick up the repairs stating normal wear and tear, furthermore the unit was leaking the bar chain oil. I took it back to big orange and since I had it for more than 30 days they refused to take it back. So I am done with Echo products, they charge too much for products and their warranty is worthless. BTW, just to let you know I have had lawnmowers for 16+ years that are working fine and I do regular preventive maintenance.

I realize this is a very old thread, but for the benefit of those reading reviews I thought I would share my experience. I've owned several Echo 210's. In terms of reliability the little echo is amazing. Not once in 12 years has an echo trimmer failed me in the field. I've had issues. Even broke a plastic piece on the carb that holds the throttle cable, even so I was able to put a zip tie on it and finish the day. And if I'm honest it broke due to my piling other tools in the back of the truck. Not Echos fault. The 210 is not exactly a powerhouse... Hey it's an entry level semi-pro tool. Echo should advertise them as "It just works". Year after year, use it knowing it will get the job done. In 2008 I bought a bigger Redmax trimmer. A bcz2401. Power on the Redmax was astounding, for a while. In all the years I've owned Echo, none have broken or failed under warranty. Redmax has failed in the field 5 times. Issues ranging from clogged screen to coil failure. Not once have I clogged a screen on an Echo exhaust. While it isn't hard to fix, it just shouldnt happen. Recently the Redmax failed again. It's out of warranty, but still very low hour (I've gone back to using the Echo). After this most recent failure I almost recycled the Redmax, it simply fails too often. I decided to try having it serviced by another dealer. The "new" service center recommended a carb kit, in installing it they found a defective diaphragm. Hopefully it will run as it should, but I will never have the confidence with it that I have with an Echo. Year after year, Echo just works. If it doesnt, I've yet to be disappointed by the installation of an "Echo re-power kit". It comes with everything to restore the original power (spark plug, air filter, fuel filter.) Also in 2009 I bought a Stihl fx 110. Maybe it wasnt setup properly from the dealer, others have said it should have lots more power. By the end of the first day the Stihl was in the back of the truck, my helper was using the old (6+ seasons) Echo. I probably sound like a company schill, but for my money and peace of mind, Echo is the clear winner. Btw if you regularly cut very tall or super thick grass the 230 is much torquier than the 210. It's surprising that such a small difference in cc delivers so much power. The 260 is simply a Hoss.

After reading your reply I remembered that after many carb adjustments and cleanings, I replaced the carb with a new one. I've also removed the muffler, cleaned the port, the screen, and I've run the trimmer with a loose gas cap. None of these changed the problem. I've moved the spark plug wire hundreds of times, tapped on the electronic unit, checked all the wires...

Just used the trimmer today...it would run for a while then start to loose power quickly. If I was fast, and turned it upside down, it would usually regain power upside down and then I could righten it and use it for a while longer(5 mins or so) before it would start to loose power again. Sometimes it would die before I could turn it over. It was always easy to start up again but sometimes I'd have to play with the hand control to keep it idling.

Wow, I think you run out of easy fix!!!

Did you check for cracks on the fuel lines? crack on the block that separate the carb from the hot cylinder?

Now you are getting into more difficult things like leaking vacuum seal around crankcase and bearing. Also seal between the cylinder and the crankcase. Setting up test for that is not as easy. Someone here might have an easy way that I cannot think of.

One thing you can try is removing the spark plug and turn the engine by hand. If you have a good vacuum seal, you should feel resistance on the down stroke, not as hard as the compression ( up ) stroke. Maybe with some soap solution around the seal and turn the engine to see any bubbles. Someone might have better ideas other than to hook a pump to the intake or exhaust port to pump.

If all else fail, maybe is time to think "new toy"!!!

Looking up your trimmer, the diagram shows that your T20 has the same carb as my old Stihl FS80 - a TK carb.
the fuel line connects to a round part held on with 3 screws.
This part is the fuel pump. It doesn't use crankcase pressure to pressurize the tank pushing fuel into the carb like today's trimmers. This diaphragm pulls fuel up to the carb.
Thats why turning it upside down solves your problem - gravity does the work instead.
Look up carb rebuild kit for TK carbs to replace the diaphragm.

Same exact problem with my Echo trimmer with PAS225 engine. Runs great upside down but sputters and won't accelerate when right-side up. I've checked everything. By the way, is there a high-speed adjustment on this thing? The manual does not mention one, nor can I find one. Idea?

I had the same problem with my fs80. i tried a carb rebuild kit with no luck. I replaced the carb with a used Walbro off a NEW fs80. just drill a new hole for the new second hose back to the tank and problem solved.
Same solution for my fs 65s which are gravity fed.

maybe a crankcase seal is gone but if it’s low on compression it could be the rings. if the crankcase seal or rings are gone it won’t be able to suck the fuel from the crank to the cylinder. a way to check if it’s the seal is to take off the pull start or flywheel and see if there’s any oil on the crank where the seal is.
