New growth on roses ShRiVelEd!!!

Hi Rose Lovers,

Please help. I cut back my roses in January and most of my 20 bushes are doing very well except for about 4 bushes. These four bushes are scattered among the healthy roses...but they are growing really shriveled up and teeny tiny and very light green in color. I put rose systemic in the soil around all my bushes and watered thoroughly about 4 wks ago. What might be happening to them and what should I do-cut off all the bad portions even though that's a heck of lot of cutting back? THANK you!!!

Has any weed killer, like Round-Up, been used in the area? It can drift on the slightest breeze, even from a neighbor's yard, and cause weird looking growth like you describe.

That happened to me in the past. I cut off the damaged growth. One rose bush grew back, eventually, but the other two died.

There is a virus called Spring ROse Dwarf virus

One of the roses I am helping care for at an elderly clients home I believe has it as well.

IF that is what it is, it appears it is not contagious persay and that as the temps get higher the roses leaf out "correctly". Ednas is now looking wonderful after starting off looking VERY bad. She won't let me destroy it and replace it as someone gave her the rose....

and this is what it looks like now that the weather is warmer. As you can see it s about to burst out all over with blooms. If you look deep into the foliage you can still see the smaller, mishapen leaves, but the new growth is looking amazing, considering she had nothing done to them for 3 or 4 years and it started off like it did.

She told me it was an iceberg but I think she has it confused with another of her flowers as this one is yellow. She is in her 90's so I guess she can say and do what she likes about her roses!

I would try that making sure to use a nice well-draining medium and keeping the leaves well watered or misted. If you had a slightly shadier spot with surrounding vegetation that might also be better, but I'm usually doing this Spring, Summer and Fall as opposed to Winter. If you have enough cuttings I'd try some in the ground and some in pots to hedge my bets. Perhaps use an inverted soda bottle with the cap removed to help hold in humidity. As Sheila alludes, buying another might be better, not only because rooting can be iffy, but also because it can take a while to grow a cutting to planting size.

I think it's the wax on the canes, not the tiny buds you see there that caused the problem. The cheaper growers wax canes so that they stay green on store shelves. I've never had a waxed cane do well even where I am (and in Coastal Cal I'm in a much cooler zone than Arizona). The buds were fine -- leave them on. But ditch the waxed cane bareroots, unless you can imagine the plant without those particular waxed canes and still see a decent plant worth buying. Some bareroots are waxed only at the tops, and those ones are usually ok, because the bottom of the cane is all you need. And by the way, I've tried everything from fingernails to credit cards to hiar driers to get that wax off before hot weather burns the cambium layer of the canes -- nothing seems to help those canes to survive. They all die anyway.

Hi, Patty. I have been studying your photos. I think Patty W might be seeing what I'm seeing. I'm concerned about that rapid growth and the odd foliage and sepal shape. I'm going to attach photos of a Zepherine Drouhin from my mother's garden in Dallas, TX. She was ill for awhile before her passing, and the garden was unsupervised. When I arrived in town, I spotted RRD. Her roses first presented with slightly rumpled elongated leaves and "whips" of canes. Then the "brooms" followed. ZD presented with quite a bit of red, but other cultivars did not. If I were you, I'd be inclined to remove odd growth at the base and discard it appropriately. Then keep a very close eye. Some roses like Lady Banks do frequently produce long canes and skinny immature foliage which normalizes over time, but your rose growth doesn't look quite right to my eye. I hope all is well with Marianne, but I strongly feel that exercising caution is good protocol. Please DO update us. All fingers crossed for a happy ending! Carol

What causes yellow roses on new growth?

Sometimes new growth may appear greener than usual but will change to darker green when mature. However, I see greener veins on those upper leaves, which raise the possibility of iron deficiency. Iron deficiency is not uncommon in alkaline clay soil. I also have heavy alkaline clay soil. Every year in the spring I supplement my soil with Sequestrene 138 Fe for alkaline soil. See this website: https://www.growerssolution.com/page/GS/PROD/63895 There are many iron formulation on the market, but for alkaline soil you need one that is chelated and readily soluble. There are also other liquid iron sold on Amazon also. Otherwise i think your teasing georgia looks healthy.

When asking for advice here, it's very helpful to supply your state and USDA climate zone-- as you see, most of us include it in our headers.

If you could give us a sharp picture of the growth in question, that would help.

Rose spring dwarf is a fairly rare disease, so I doubt you would have four infected plants.
