Replacement engine for Troy Bilt tiller

I have a 1980 Troy Bilt tiller with a 7hp Kohler engine. After 27 years of use, the engine "gave up the ghost". Does anybody know of a replacement engine that will work on my tiller? Also, it is a 4-speed Horse model.

For me, the hands-down winner would be the Honda over the Briggs. As it happens, it's even less expensive to buy. Your tiller is geared down to drive the tines at less than 10 percent of the engine's speed at wide open throttle. That means the torque and hp of the engine are more than ten times greater as far as the tines are concerned. If your old engine did a good job when it was new, then there is no real reason to increase the hp because all you are increasing is the amount of fuel you will burn each time out. If you find those engines too expensive, you might want to consider a Honda clone from places such as Harbour Freight. After all, most people don't even put ten hours per season on their tillers.

What horsepower engine is on it now? There should be some numbers on the engine somewhere. smallenginewarehouse.com has some great prices on engines, you may be able to find a direct replacement there. I've bought from them a few times, great people to do business with.

Good deal, I sould have warned you NOT to pound too hard, it's possiable to break the ears off of the mounting pads (big problem) so all is well, I use a "dry film lube" when i replace or work on anything thats cose to "dirt" I may be wrong doing that, but thats what I do, theroy being greese/oil attracts dirt

Assuming that you are re-using the pulley. All you need to do is to make the center of the cranks is the same distance from the mounting plate.

Why mess around repowering the tiller when all you have to do is rebuild the Kohler? It's already proven its reliability to you. What more do you want?

Parts are readily available.

I agree with castoff. Have it rebuilt if at all possible.

The 7HP cast iron Kohler was far superior to anything built today. Unless it's sustained major internal damage then try and get it rebuilt.

It would be interesting to know exactly what happened to the engine.
You'd want to watch the price of a rebuild, even though the Kohler was a superior engine, there still a limit to how much money you pour into it rather than buying a new one.

Friend had a 7 horse kohler "K" I think it was. It was on a cub tractor with a 42 inch 3 blade cast deck. Delco starter/alternator and a button clutch. Must of been early 70's. Anyway I short blocked it and boy did that thing run. I'd look into rebuilding what you have. That is a great engine.

I would second S E W for an engine. They had/have the 6hp OHV B&S that fit my 75' Horse. The engine is strong as an ox, and starts with one pull. For just under $200 incl freight you cant beat it.
