Seeking photos of Maman Cochet's habit

I'm trying to decide exactly which spot to plant Maman C. HelpMeFind has lots of pretty close-ups of the flowers, but I hope someone has a photo of the whole plant so I can see how she looks/spreads so I hopefully will site her properly.

I'm sure some of the forum will have some pics. If you search it on google images, there are some of the bush.

Try dogpile or google. I try to shy away from Google. I think they are the evil empire, but dogpile may be just as bad. There are many good photographs on the web. Seek and ye shall find. :-)

Thanks everybody for your input. I went ahead and ordered NILES COCHET along with two other Teas and a Bourbon. He is simply too handsome not to give him a try. The fragrance really doesn't have to be strong. It just has to be present. For example, BELINDA'S DREAM has a light fruity fragrance (almost like Celestial Seasons raspberry tea, but milder). Nothing to rave about but it is persistent and detectable under most conditions. That combined with gorgeous flowers, unbeatable repeat, and superb disease resistance makes her a keeper in mom's garden (I also planted a Belinda's Dream in my MIL's garden, but don't tell my mom). If Niles Cochet's blossoms live up to the images AND he has some fragrance AND his foliage is resistant to black spot in coastal Virginia, then he will be worth the effort/expense. I think I need to give my card a rest. Here is what I've ordered just within the last week or so: Clementina Carbonieri Climbing Radiance Climbing White Maman Cochet (2) Deuil du Dr. Reynaud (pour moi, j'adore Bourbons!) Niles Cochet Rock Hill Peach Tea Souvenir de Francis Gaulain Of course I still need 2 more shrub roses, 1 Floribunda, 1 Tea, 2 climbing Teas, 1 vintage Hybrid Tea, and a David Austin. Sherry, I read your original post but not a lot of what comes after because I'm in a rush. You seem to have nailed it according to what I have here on the other side of the country. Rosette Delizy is vase shaped (great rose btw), the Cochets are open and angular (But...I must say that Maman is the most lanky for me, White Maman and Niles are much more bushy, especially Niles - which I got from Ashdown). Mme. Berkeley is fat and wide! So is Clementina Carbonieri. That's all for now.

Campanula, thank you so much for posting that long list for me and going to so much trouble! This is VERY useful, because it also suggests what TYPES of roses, I mean in the sense of families, etc., might be most adapted.For example, I see that the great majority of the ones on the list are basically ramblers.However, I take your point about the lack of distinction element. For example, I have a Desprez a Fleurs Jaune that has to be moved (it's very unhappy where it presently is). I thought about using this for the catenary but decided against it, for fear that DFJ would just get too big (besides,I think it might enjoy some afternoon shade)I assume that Tony Lord is a UK writer/gardener? Because climate must be taken into account as well.In the Botanica rose book, they put UK and Italy in the same USDA zones, more or less,but the two climates are SO different(though this fall,I must say that it feels like rainy Ireland here ;it just doesn't seem to want to stop.)I want to look up some of the ones on the list that I don't know. One oddity: for me the Supers Dorothy and Excelsa are definitely out of the running; neither of these two seems to want to even CLIMB in my garden!In fact, I probably will eventually buy a new plant of Super D (it is just so beautiful) and try again from scratch;maybe try acidifying the soil,I have this alkaline Appenine soil. I moved it last year and put it in good soil,yet this year it still did the same thing as far as blooming goes:lots of buds,none of which manage to open really,they just ball,or rot or something.Now, with all the rain, the plant is growing like a maniac,putting out 2-3 meter long canes,very flexible and practically thornless.If only it would bloom,as a green plant it's great, but we don't grow roses for foliage really.I'll give it another season,but if it doesn't do something good soon as far as flowering is concerned, I'm afraid it'l get the shovel Yesterday I sent an e-mail to a German company ,asking if they can ship to Italy (I can't read German, so hopefully someone there can read English) I really hope they will answer me,because I would so like to order some of their rose, two of which I am thinking of specifically for the catenary: Henri Barruet and Asta Von Parpart.These are both rambler types, supposedly with some potential re-bloom.If I really do manage to get a hold of these two roses, I'm thinking of the following colour scheme for the catenary: Mme.E.Souffrain and Henri Barruet on the end posts, Emmanuela De Mouchy and Elie Beauvilain on the next two, and the dark Asta Von Parpart in the center.If they don't answer me, though,maybe Paul Transon would be good in place of Henri Barruet... cheers, bart

Yes, Marlorena, I recall reading somewhere that NRS recommendations were particularly welcomed by gardeners in the PNW, since the climates are supposedly so similar. Curdle, sometime you should read old rose descriptions from Samuel McGredy. EVERY of his roses lavished with praise, each one the very best rose ever raised... he got away with it, because it seemed that he really was enamored of these roses, and felt the praise was truly justified. Gosh Jeri...I just fell off my chair at the size of that thing! She is HUGE. I better go exam the spot I have mine planted in.....I don't think I allowed enough room!

Deb, in the Sacramento Cemetery's Historic Rose Garden, the Teas (in fact, most of the roses) are not pruned to reduce their size.
And let's face it -- reducing the size of roses IS one of the main reasons people prune them.

Let to grow to the size they're genetically-programmed to achieve, they put down honkin' deep roots. That helps them get by on less water than we all think our roses need.

These "Evergreen" roses don't take pruning at all well, IN MY GARDEN. So stepping away from the pruning shears has really helped them.

And in consideration to the changing climate here (and the water-rationing looming on our horizon) we need anyway to make our roses as drought-tolerant as they can be.

Which is a long way of saying that not everyone HAS to let Teas grow that big.
But Lordie, they really are lovely that way!

Well, Jeri beat me to most of what I was going to say. The cemetery's Maman Cochet is nearly 20 years old and really has never been pruned for size. We try to keep our roses out of the pathway and our monuments visible, but otherwise we let them grow and grow. Roses don't freeze here, and get weekly deep watering in deep, sandy soil. We've had to dig out roses occasionally, and the roots go on, and on, and on.

I have a White Maman Cochet in my home garden that's been there for a decade. Different soil, different conditions. I pruned and deadheaded it like a modern rose its first six or seven years, and it grew into a very awkward shrub. If you shorten a cane, these Cochets will send off laterals at 90 degree angles, often straight across the center of the plant. I've been much more gentle about my pruning and have deadheaded only with the "bend and snap" technique for the last two years, and was rewarded this year with a fabulous new basal cane and a much more graceful, floriferous plant. Once you understand how the laterals are going to grow, you can use the Cochet growth pattern to your advantage. My rose is about four feet high and five feet wide right now, and will be a bit taller and wider by the end of the summer. I prune it for size because it's necessary.

I don't grow teas, but I have some related roses with the "drunken plumber" pattern of growth. Some pruning is necessary because of winter damage. Is it feasible-- on smaller plants-- to shape the plants by removing growth buds that point in the wrong direction? For example, when three buds break at the same site?
