What Buy For Ridding Yard of Deep Piles of Leaves/Tree Debris

We just bought a new house (a resale) where the wooded back yard (.30 of acre) has years of accumulation of fallen leaves, twigs, small branches - and maybe some other things buried in there, too. No grass is growing, of course, only the trees continuing their reforesting effots. We intend to begin renovating the yard in August. Our end goal: Reduced number of trees, nice lawn bordered with shade plantings. This will be a multi step process, of which I'll have many questions along the way.

Question Re: "Step One": We need to clear the yard of the debris. We realize we'll have to do some raking and bagging, but we are looking to minimize the physical labor by purchasing the "right" power tool. Husband and I are going back and forth on if we should buy a blower, or a blower/vacuum/mulcher. Also, this will be the tool we'll use for year to year fall leaf clean up.

We've been pointed towards Stihl brand. We need to economize and not spend more than $300 on this purchase, if possible.

Thoughts? Advice? Input? Tips? on getting "Step One" accomplished.

We are in the Mid-Atlantic region.
