Stump Grindings - What to do with them?
Comments (12)Estreya, Composting isn't that hard, and it's well worth the effort when it comes to improving your soil without breaking the bank. But it's good to arm yourself with information first. That way you can avoid the smells and the "pile of goo." Of course with all those wood chips that shouldn't be a problem! I'd recommend a couple of things: 1) Buy or borrow a copy of "The Rodale Book of Composting." Read it through, let the ideas compost a bit, and figure out what might work best for your situation. 2) See if your local Cooperative Extension offers composting demos. It's a good to see the process first-hand and network with folks who have interest and experience in the area....See MoreGrinding Tree Stumps & Bracket Fungi
Comments (2)Yes, a pic would help. You said bracket fungi are present, and the vast majority of these are saprophytic only-consumers of dead cellulose. The Armillaria resin mentions is the fungus which produces honey mushrooms as its' fruiting bodies. These are "normal" mushrooms with a stalk and gill slits for spore dispensation. A good edible too, though I'd not be thrilled to see it in my woods ;^( as it does invade healthy, growing trees. +oM...See MoreStump grinding chips
Comments (12)Removing them yourself is a very big chore. You can't shovel them, you can't use a pitch fork, you can't use a rake. They are chunky, not shredded. The only efficient way is jaws on a piece of heavy equipment. Several years ago I had a big maple cut down and was left with a small mountain of chips from the stump. I wanted them as mulch in another area so I told them to leave the chips. It took me two weeks of all day work basically scooping them into buckets with my hands as best as I could. I wish I had had the tree company take them away. And then I had a big hole to fill. $300 to take chips away from several trees seems a good deal to me. Are they going to fill the hole with dirt? If that $300 includes dirt, by all means that it. If they're not filling the hole, you will have to bring in dirt....See MoreTree stump grindings

It should break down by then, especially with some fertilizer, and if any of that was from the old stumps or already dead trees, that helps too since it has a head start. Wood chips are great for paths and areas between beds or anywhere you can't or don't want to have grass. I can always find a place for them. Any area that's already mulched can usually use some more....See MoreToronado3800 Zone 6 St Louis
