Craftsman Garage Door not opening/closing

I have a 1/2 hp craftsman garage door that will not open or close via the remote or wall mount. I opened it one mornig and then went to close it and it would not work. I checked the sensors and the green lights are lit on both of them. I have tried locking and unlocking the control panel and it still will not work. When I do go to open the door the lights trun on just like they normally would but you don't even hear the motor turn on. Any suggestions??

Is the opener still in the door open position? If so the trolley (the thing the chain hooks to) may be jammed against a bolt just in front of the motor unit. If so, remove the bolt and then turn the 'up limit' about 3 turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the side of the motor unit.

How old are your openers? If they are made by Chamberlain, which my Lift Masters are, and I think some newer Craftsman are also, then it could be the "mother boards". Did a thunderstorm pass through the night before? It happpened to mine, twice. After a lightning bolt hit close to the house the doors would only open and then do nothing else. The sensors were on, but dim. I replaced the "mother boards" and they worked fine. Thinking a power surge was the cause, I installed surge suppressors in the electrical outlets. The next year it happened again. I contacted Chamberlain in AZ directly. They sent me two new mother boards, two new sets of sensors, and two lightning suppressors that I had to wire in to the "mother boards". They said the lightning passed through the sensors to the boards which caused the failures. That made sense because the bolts that mount the sensors looked like they were spot welded. I didn't realize electricity could pass through 2x4's, but it did. I also wrapped electrical tape around the the sensor mount bolts for extra protection. So far no problems, but that just may be because there hasn't been a lightning strike nearby since. Who knows?

Make sure you put the black cup back on the end of the motor shaft and that it is pressed all the way on. Make sure the RPM sensor is plugged in. If neither of these are the issue, then you probably did not have the motor shaft pushed all the way back when you tightened the coupler after replacing the worm gear. Loosen that coupler up and from the front of the motor (opposite end in which the coupler is on) push the shaft back as far as it will go. Hold it there while you tighten the coupler back up and then try it.

I tightened the chain with door closed with adjuster at the top of door - bolt with 2 nuts on it at end of chain..and no luck with the door closing..but I did find a fix to my issue. I found it in a manual online at http://homeappliance.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/craftsman/craftsman_garage_door_opener_product_list.html I didn't find my exact model opener but found one that looked similar...page 28 model 13953920DM I made an adjustment to the down force on the back of the opener. (far right adjuster) - Move dial clockwise one or two ticks and now I can push the button once and the door goes down..My setting was on 1 and now I moved it to 3 Hope this helps someone else... It is a sensor problem if the main light is flashing 10 times when the door reverses. If this isn't happening there is a small circuit board with an infra-red detector that causes the door to reverse if it hits an object. If this board goes bad or something blocks the infra-red it will cause this problem. This board is located near the front shaft of the motor and there is a black plastic interruptor cup on the end of that shaft. Make sure the cup is pressed all the way on the shaft and try. The board should not be very expensive and is available at any good door repair company.

I have not made any adjusments. Today I rotated the motor unit and trolley assembly by hand at the coupling in the closed direction until the trolley was about half way between the open and closed position. I then operated the opener with the remote and the door once again opeated normally and went to the full open position. I tried operating the opener again to close the door and got the same response as before - the motor unit operated for an instant and the trolley moved further in the open direction. The opener acts like whatever tells the door to close when it's in the open position is not telling the door to go closed. Is this the logic board? Thanks for your help.

A bit off-topic, but our fire company was called out to a lightning strike one day. The bolt came in thru an open window, hit the butt plate of a Winchester carbine on the wall rack, bounced to a knife rack further along the wall, threw the knives which then just missed the lady who lived there, and passed out thru the far wall!
Yes, lightning can and does go thru 2x4's, and anything else except tin, etc.
