Gear Drive vs. Hydrostatic Drives On Lower End Mowers

I spent a good bit of time reading 38 pages of threads here, and I found out that some folks say the Hydrostatic drives in the lower end Deere's, Cubs, etc, are not as durable as their bigger siblings.

Is this true?

If it is, then wouldn't a gear drive be better and last longer then?
