Rubber mulch - termites - muclh alternative

Has anyone had any experience w/ using rubber mulch in flower beds?

We had a run in w/ termites last year - found damage and had to replace interior wall studs, sill beams, etc. I have a flower bed next to the house and DH has said that all the mulch has to go (in fact, I was raking out some of the old mulch in that bed last night and found a slew of termites). I thought paving over that bed w/ the pavers we have on our walkway but DH won't let me take out the 2 termite bait/trap things that are in that flower bed and I don't want to have 2 holes in the paved walkway/patio.

Anyway, just looking for input on rubber mulch or mulch alternative (and I don't like those old white landscape stones so that's not an option).

Let me also add that our neighbor has 2 uber tall pine trees that dump copious amounts of pine needles on our front yard and said flower bed. So, I'd have to come up w/ a way to get the pine needles out of the mulch alternative each spring.

Thanks in advance!
