Troybilt tiller ignition question

I have a troybilt 6hp with HH60 tecumseh engine. How expensive and involved is it to install electronic ignition module I've heard people talk about and where's the best place to get one? This is follow up to previous post. Tiller would start for a brief period last year and breather filled with oil. Was told by a dealer it was probably rings but thanks to advice on this post you all suggested it was the carb. Oil level was high and thinned out with gas.I got a new carb and added gasline shutoff as advised here,changed the oil and also got new muffler. Got motor mounting pins out and cleaned up corrosion on lathe with emery so everything moves smoothly.Checked compression and it's about 95 lbs. If I can get a spark now,the engine should run and I should be good to go. I pulled the plug and checked for spark but had none. I also tried another plug and still saw no spark. Advice I've gotten so far from this forum has been right on and I really appreciate the help.

Did you check compression and spark at wide open throttle?

Well on your original post, you said it ran for a few seconds. What happened in between then and now?
Try cleaning any rust off the flywheel where it passes the coil.
Check point gap.
Do you have the service manual?
I don't know if a new module will fit your engine.

We inherited a Troy-Bilt tiller with Gardenway TH 1018 on the tiller and a B&S engine # 171437, prob 1992 built. Engine runs great, tines move forward & back, but not fast enough to do more than make a scratch on the ground. Looks like a place for 2 belts, but only one there. Need 2nd belt? Also, don't see any levers for the tine and wheel speeds to be run separately. Only tillers I'm familiar with are the front tine models where you have to pull back really hard to make it dig in. Shouldn't the tires and weight of the machine do that work for me? Any help would be appreciated. Have a friend that "dabbles" in mechanics, but we need a manual or something. -- THANKS!

I have a T/B Super Bronco - 3rd season. It starts. It runs. It tills. It tills deep. Deep tilling in hard soil is tough on the operator - the machine wants to lunge forward - yes I have forward rotating tines, not counter rotating. Once an area has been deep tilled, subsequent tilling is an easy, one-handed, walk beside job. I have 3000+ sqft, of clay and shale. If I had sandy soil or a smaller garden, I might have opted for a smaller machine. My only complaint is the mounting of the air cleaner. This could have been made stronger. If you hit this hard, you could snap the mounting studs. Hope this helps.. Jim

Lary, These are forward rotating tine machines, not counter-rotating tines. All of the old Horses were this way. Bill, The number you posted is just a casting number, not the serial number. Look below the T-handle and clean all the gunk off to find a serial number. Parts that you need are readily available from a bunch of sources, including MTD (who took over for Troy Bilt) Jenice, If you have the 6HP Tecumseh engine, you dont have all of the model number. What you posted is the "spec" number. Your model number is most likely HH60. Use that model number, and you shouldnt have any problem finding the carb kit. The recoil starter may be a little bit harder to find.

David: I very much doubt that kaisen would see your question since he only had One post in the old Gardenweb Seven years ago. However, I suspect that there eventually be an old reader who has messed with the transmission who might see your post. I have, and have read the manual but have had no need to get into the transmission. I just googled and you can find a manual HERE. I have used my manual for some issues. It is designed for home users with regular rather than advanced tools but certainly expects a basic practical experience working on an auto or similar.

I just screw compression gauge in place of spark plug and checked while pulling starter rope.

That was late last fall when it would run for a few seconds. Before that it sat in my father in law's barn for years because he said it didn't run, so I decided to try and get it started. It had a spark then although it wasn't a nice blue spark, and I could get it to start by putting a little gas in spark plug hole. When the breather filled with pil I kind of gave up on it until I found this forum and started asking for advice. I don't have a service manual but would like to get one. I'll check flywheel for rust. Don't know what the setting should be for points. I did check online and saw modules listed for H60 but not HH60. All I remember about points is back in the day when we worked on our own cars you could use a matchbook striker to get a close enough setting on points to get the car running. I will keep you all posted and again, thanks for the advice. Tony

Bill, thanks for the manual info. Well, WOOHOO.As soon as I read the posts, I went out and pulled the gas tank and shroud. The flywheel was pretty rusty. I lightly cleaned up the magnets and surfaces they pass but still no spark, then I disconnected the wire to the kill switch and got a spark. Put things back together and it started and purred like a kitten. I'll replace the kill switch wire,then all I'll need to do is get one tire inflated and I'll be tearing up ground. Once again, thanks to everyone who replied to my questions. You're a great bunch of people and if I was doing this on my own, I'd be blowing snow again before the tiller was fixed.
