I grow fresh berries far cheaper than I could possibly buy them, and I can have them when they're not available fresh at any cost (I have everbearers that produce 2 crops or sometimes even are true day-neutrals that trickle out their crops; farmers prefer single-croppers because of their harvesting overhead). We're going to have chickens next year to convert our scraps into valuable eggs and, um, fertilizer. I plant a high ratio of semi-permanent crops, because it gets labor-intensive to till the soil every year. My fruit trees, berries, artichokes, asparagus, perennial herbs, and rhubarb don't need annual tilling. I use the best hand-tools I can find. Cheaper to buy and operate than mechanized tools, and more effective and longer-lived than shoddy tools. My produce requires far less processing and handling than its commercial counterpart to reach my table. Pick, pick, waddle over to kitchen sink, rinse, and it's at the point where the commercial produce was after days of processing and transport. So, they are not always correct that it is cheaper to "just buy it". But savings on fresh produce is not the only objective, as many of you have already pointed out. There are crops I want but could not get fresh at any price, but can grow, there is a quality factor to consider (my produce is fresher and my fruit is fully ripe), and the garden keeps me off the streets and is cheap recreation.

Northern- Last year i bought the rest of the stock of Menards 32oz Ortho TotalKill ...2.5% ... It was clearance...might have been around the same price. I see they aren't carrying it anymore so its getting tougher to find the stuff (Permethrin). I'm still still finishing up the 6 year old bottle of Permethrin i had (which is going bad ..had chunky stuff in the bottle). Right now Menards has 11% and if you have Discover card you can get another 5%...

Jim get Safer's insecticidal soap and they will die! they're much easier to treat than thrips, because thrips will fly away. Those buggers should die immediately when insecticidal soap is applied to them. Soft bodied larvae like what you've got die immediately with those kinds of applications. My heirloom roses: one was 3" with eight tiny yellowed leaves about the size of 1/2 a penny and a yellow stem, and the other was 5", had a healthy green stem, and had 5 healthy leaves on it. Both were my Special Occasion Roses. The Gardenville Sea Tea and the Potting soil with Rosetone helped them to be the healthy plants that they are now. Sometimes when a plant is weak you can't plant them into the ground straightaway as Heirloom's instructions specify. You just have to baby them before transplanting. Before it's too late tell your sister to make sure her baby roses have very moist soil with a super dilute solution of watered down DrammaticK. Maybe lend her a small bottle (pour out some into one of those tiny juice bottles). Your sister's roses are undergoing transplant shock right now, it's nothing to do with rose care I believe but the condition of the roots when re-planted. Younger plants usually have more problems with being re-planted. I think your DrammaticK has the same dosage as my Gardenville Sea Tea. Mine is 4TBS. per gallon (2 oz.) What she needs to do is put a teaspoon of Drammatic in a gallon and drench the soil around it. Keep the soil very moist but not soggy and feed any excess to a different plant. Moisture helps bathe and replenish the traumatized roots. Again, your sister will need to use her observation and instinct with her new roses. Usually the dilute Drammatic K needs to be continued for about 2 weeks until the plant re-establishes itself, then regular feedings can be resumed. Jim, I am praying and wishing for a very successful treatment for your wife Sue. Does the IV treatment last just for that 7 days' time? What medication are they giving her? Add corn, a good pinch of salt and 2 to 3 turns freshly ground pepper. Toss corn to coat lightly with EVOO and cook until slightly browned and caramelized, approximately 2-3 minutes. I blanch it and freeze for later use during winter and spring. Recipe: As much field corn as you want. Cream it [I use a Lee corn creamer.] Add butter to suit yourself to a thick bottomed pot, then add corn and cook on low until bubbly and heated through, stirring so it won't scorch on the bottom. Add enough cream or milk to cut thickness to your liking, then salt and pepper to taste, then heat to good and hot. Remove from heat; place cooker under cold running water. Remove lid. Drain bean mixture; rinse with cold water. Drain and cool. Shuck it and heat just enough so butter melts on it. Eat. And if the butter runs down your arms as you eat, so much the better! As for using it in things, forget it. No way I'd ruin perfectly good other ingredients by mixing with corn. The corn is not quite ready, but he can't wait. He is also the one that picks an ear, strips back the shuck and silk for a taste or two. Our 4 year DGS does the same thing. I have to agree with Rusty on fresh sweet corn. Bring the water to a boil, put the corn in it and turn off the burner. I cover the pot and move it off the burner so the corn stays hot. We freeze alot of corn, cut off the cob and creamed and enjoy it all year. Here I forgot to take a picture, but Elery grilled some corn that we bought at Meijer's for 7 ears for $1.00, then we cut it from the cob and mixed it with black beans and salsa. It wasn't bad. Today we took the rest of the corn, cut it from the cob and made vegetarian vegetable soup, although it was sunny and 74. It was good with the leftover dill cottage cheese bread that I made for the 4th of July party yesterday. It's supposed to be a knock-off of the Cheesecake Factory's recipe. Never eaten there, but my family likes these a lot. This last time I made them a lot smaller, more like drop cookies. SWEET CORN TAMALE CAKES Ingredients: 1-1/2 C Frozen Sweet Corn 1 Stick Butter, softened 3 T Sugar 1/8 tsp. salt 1/2 C Masa Harina (corn flour) 2 T All-Purpose Flour Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Chop 1 C frozen corn in processor until it's coarsely pureed. Combine pureed corn with softened butter, sugar, and salt. Blend well with mixer until smooth. Add masa and flour and blend well. Mix in remaining 1/2 C frozen corn by hand. Measure 1/2 cup portions and form into 3 inch wide patties. Arrange on baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes. Carefully flip all cakes and bake an additional 5-7 minutes until browned.
