Tell me about Caroline Hairston

I've got this pretty Pioneer lady in a pot, fell for her last fall at ARE because she was apricot, smelled wonderful, and because of her pedigree, LOL (Buff Beauty x Heritage.) I'm getting ready to do some garden placements and would love to hear about her growth habit (does she want to be a really big girl?) does she hold her leaves well, does she want to be bushy or more tall and naked at the bottom, does she bloom a lot, can she stand the heat????

I can't believe no one has answered this. I also have a Caroline Hairston baby and want to know more about it.
That pedigree suggests a very large plant.
I am even more excited to have this rose now that I know Buff Beauty and Heritage are in her background!

I was hoping someone would weigh in on her growth habits and size in this zone, too! But I can tell you from what she's doing in the pot on my porch that the flowers are gorgeous...tall, classic HT-style big buds and blooms of a pale apricot fading to a sort of apricot buff, blooms last a long time and stems are long. Normally I am much more attracted to "old rose" type blooms but the color and heritage of this one made me buy her; hey, she might *look* like one of those prissy HTs, but she's a Pioneer gal! ;~)

I'd still like to know if she wants to be really big, though, whether she has good repeat bloom, and whether she stays leafy most of the year or gets sort of naked on the bottom.

Texas Agricultural college says that either white, yellow or blue sticky traps will work for thrips. There are different types of thrips and I would think that since rose thrips are attracted to light colored roses, I would try the white traps first, which can be done by simply buying white plastic plates and covering the surface with Vasoline. If that didn't work well I might try adding sugar to the Vasoline to encourage the thrips to come and feed and stick to the trap. At Texas Agricultural and M., sugar has been found useful in insecticidal sprays to attract aphids to feed on it. Here is my recipe for garlic spray: I used this a few years ago and it worked well, though its' a bit of a bother to make. Thrip-be-gone spray Put a gallon of hot water in a large pot or bowl. add: 12 cloves of garlic. You don't need to peel the cloves, because it's going in the blender 1 chopped onion 7 Jalepeno peppers, split lengthwise. (Tabasco and chilli pepper sauce was not effective, when I tried substituting them for the jalapenos) 1 tsp soap (heck after reading your freinds advice I'd use Palmolive) 1 T. canola oil to make it stick to the leaves. Canola oil will disperse in oil, unlike many other oils. Let this sit for at least 24 hours, up to 48 hours. then strain and spray.I had spray left over, and it kept for a week in my fridge. Marin county rose website reccomends flooding the soil in spring after rose thrips first show up, in order to drown thrip pupae. No information about how much water to use, but more than saturation. I've never heard this advice before and would like to ask an entomologist more about it. die thrips die! , ooops I meant R.I.P..thrips, may angels sing thee to thy rest. Lux.

Elie Beauvilain -- Blooms are beautiful, but my patience is at an end. If she doesn't do something exciting VERY soon, this rose will be gone. All two feet of her. It's been close on five years. Perhaps she will love Texas heat. Gilbert Nabonnand -- It took him a good four years to really establish, but he is finally a graceful plant of some four feet, which covers itself in opalescent blooms. In coastal Southern California, he's a winner. Le Pactole -- This rose was returned to commerce, having been discovered in Sonora by Botanist and Rosarian Fred Boutin. I LOVE IT! I saw it first in the Sacramento City Cemetery, where it is at least 8 ft. tall. The bloom color is very like Lamarque, but the form is different. Twisting ribbon-like petals give it a unique look. Le Pactole may take a while to mature, but once it does, it's a winner. Radiance -- It has been said of the Radiance clan that they can be grown successfully in any place where civilized man (or woman!) has managed to live. That's probably no exaggeration. They are disease-free, beautiful, and vigorous. I have Red Radiance, and intend to get Radiance. Lady Anne Kidwell -- Among my favorite Poly-Teas. A graceful plant which can get big if not pruned. Disease-resistant in California. Blooms in volume. You won't regret this one. Sprays are very open (this is not a prospect for rose shows -- judges hate it). -Elie Beauvilein" I'd agree with Vintage, the latter flushes are lighter than the first, it is lovely though and to my nose, fragrant. Because you mentioned repeat bloom to be important to you, there are many lovely pink blend Tea roses to choose from, with very good repeat. -Le Pactole" A rose that requires patience. Mine took 2 years to reach 2 1/2 feet tall, yet it gave such heartlongingly beautiful roses, I did not mind a bit that it was slow to build. I gave it away to a neighbor when I moved, and remember "Le Pactole" fondly. -"Westside Road Cream Tea" is a useful shorter Tea that matures to a height of c. 4 feet tall in Northern California. The first Tea to bloom in spring, very bushy and pretty foliage. Healthy enough to be grown with organic methods in our region, for me, the blooms of "Westside Road Cream Tea" are not as breathtakingly lovely as "Le Pactole". I consider the merits of W.R. C.T. to be in its' early bloom, fast repeat, and pretty growth habit. -My "Victor Velidan" wanted to die, and I let it. "V.V." had an upright growth habit, similar to a Hybrid Tea, that I could not abide. It did produce a strongly seductive perfume under warm and humid conditions, but I see growth habit more than I smell roses. Adeiu Victor! I confess compared to L. d. Messimy, I love "Comtesse du Cayla" beter. It is a larger China-Tea, with larger blooms than L. d. M., that range from orange, buff-yellow, pink and red. Hi Cory, I'm about 20 mins west of Greensboro in a 7a zone. You may want to check out a zone map as this state varies quite a bit depending on which part you settle in. I can drive about 15 minutes south of here and be in 7b, then about an hour north of me I could get into some zone 6. Part of the coast I think goes up to 8. I'm a transplant to the Carolinas myself. It's a beautiful state with much to offer. Mountains, beaches, sandhills, I think we've got it all. Of course each area has its own growing challenges. I love the extended growing season. We tend to have some problems in the spring. Some things get nipped, which can be a problem for fruiting trees. Depending on where you live, how the house is sited, etc., can create some interesting microclimates too. Check out Tony Avents nursery at PlantDelights.com. He's in that area of NC and is notorious for zone pushing. We also have a wonderful bunch of gardeners in Carolina, that love helping and sharing with one another. We (Carolina Forum) get together a couple times a year for a plant swap in Garner and then there are several other swaps that go on in other areas of the state. There are a couple people that post regularly that are into roses. I am sure they could answer your rose questions in more detail. As to the fresh tortillas, not that I've ever heard of, but ask around and you might find some place that does it. Hope you find what you're looking for! D

I just bought this rose on the strength of one fading, fragrant bloom last weekend at the Antique Rose Emporium. I love apricots, so should like this rose. I, too, would like to hear something of her growth habits so to know where to plant her. Perhaps someone has grown her during the summer? Thanks!

I grew her during the summer. Remember, she's only a baby, so these growth habits may fill out once she matures.
This is a tall rose. We're talking 7 ft or so. Not wide at all, but not stiff and gangly like a ht or grandiflora. More vase shaped and loose at the top. I'm kind of scared about what the future growth will bring, because it looks like this could have been grown as a climber - at least a leaning type climber. The habit is pretty enough that I am not thinking of pruning her down next spring - I'm going to treat her like the other Austins and let her get a strong structure of growth before pruniing for height- maybe that's not what I'm supposed to do with Austins, but that's what I like to do.
The blooms are wonderful. Very fragrant, very full petaled like the Austins. The repeat was slow this year, but the blooms were worth the wait. Out of the new rose garden with 70 or so roses that were new to me this year, Caroline Hairston is one of 10 or so that I LOVE LOVE LOVE. Now that I've grown it I will never be without it.
Another ARE introduction worth trying is Star of the Republic. Breathtaking apricot blooms. Same upright vase shaped growth. Blooms aren't as fragrant as Caroline Hairston and it actually repeats a little less, but this is another rose I wouldn't live without.

Where is Melva? She's grown Caroline Hairston longer than I have.
