Gas/Oil Mix for Chain Saw

Can someone tell me the correct gas/oil mix for the McCulloch Timber Bear Chain Saw? Thanks, Marvin E.

Try 32:1. If unsure,I've found it best to be strong on the oil rather than not quite enough. With too much oil,it can foul the plug or plug the spark arrestor. Not enough and you will be looking for another saw.

Per Mike Acres' website (Chainsaw Collectors Corner), the McCulloch TimberBear wanted 40:1.

You should be more than adequately lubricated and protected at this ratio with a modern oil. Heck, you should be fine at 50:1 with a good oil, too, for what that's worth. The quality of two-stroke oils has increased so dramatically since the days of mixing straight 30wt motor oil in with the gas (at 16:1 or 32:1, no less), that it is no longer necessary to use these ultra-rich ratios to get the appropriate degree of protection.

I now run full-synthetic Mobil Racing MX2T in all my two-stroke equipment (43:1, 6oz to 2 gallons), but was very pleased with the more practical and readily available Echo semi-synthetic stuff I ran for a number of years. You can buy the Echo semi-synthetic oil at most OPE dealers and I believe you can even get it at Home Depot, too. I believe that the Echo mix has fuel stabilizer in it, too, which is nice if you're not burning through your can of mixed gas every few days.

Certain models seems to be initially hard starting 440 maybe one.. I don't like the start switch setup, supposeable when you pull the choke out it flips the switch to the start mood. I guessing it probably was flooded. I would Try it again in the morning but only push the primer bulb once twice at most, choke on, two pull then choke off. two pulls see if that does anything. If you can get it to run I'm sure you will be satified with the preformance. But sounds like you are determined to take it back and I don't blame you. Nothing more aggrevating to get something new and it don't work. I've got 345 and it will slice right through oak with little effort. It has never been hard starting, never boggs, and easy on gas. with the forced air induction system sounds like it's turbo charged.

I would say take it to the dealer and let them take a look at it. They should be happy to do so for no charge since you just bought it. It could be that the fuel mixture needs to be adjusted after breaking in a little bit. I have no direct experience with this model saw, but several of the newer 2-cycle engines I have come across seem to be set quite lean, and if too lean will bog when attempting to accelerate the engine. Will your saw idle and then bog when you attempt to accelerate, or not stay idling? If it is only a "won't idle" problem, then it may be as simple as a small increase in the idle speed screw.

Hi, Years ago when gasoline was "real" gasoline, the shelf life was much longer. What I mean is, originally all gasoline was simply made from distilling gasoline from crude oil. Today because there is so much demand for gasoline, a large percentage is made by "Cracking" other distilates to form gasoline. This gasoline is more prone to breakdown because it is more chemically unstable. Stabil and other similar products serve as a preservative. Oil companies usually do not put such preservative in their products because most consumers will go through a tank of gasoline in their cars in about a week or so. So it would be an additional expense which would not be required. Lawn mower folks, only get though maybe a can of gas in a month or two. And in some gardening products, such as blowers are only used during the autum season. Any petrol / gasoline left in the tank will break down to form varnishes and other esters. I actually have never emptied out the gas tanks of my gardening stuff. I do though always use stabil in my petrol. It is not that expensive. I think a $US 7 Stabil will last me a whole year or more. I use about a gallon of gas a week in the mowing season. Best, Mike.

Thanks - sounds good - I didn't know there was light bar oil. In the interim, I remembered that I stopped filling the oil tank and just used a spray oil on the chain years ago for some reason. I guess I'll pick up some light bar oil tomorrow since I need some for the gas saw anyway. After the recent Hurricane, I used the gas saw more in two days than I had in my whole prior life. I realized that the electric is very stealthy and great for small jobs. The neighbors (and I do it too) come out to see what's going down (joke) when they hear a gas saw fire up. The electric just sounds like some kind of power tool. :)

The Echo oil is top drawer. I would mix it at 50:1
