Shovel Prunned Already This Spring

Actually I should have written shovel pruned already this spring today.

I just hate weak growers and poor doers. So today I shovel prunned the DOUBLE DELIGHT that I bought and planted last spring as a bagged rose in Home Depot. It just struggled along last year while roses around it took off and thrived. I replaced it with the TRAVIATA that I bought afew days ago.

Next today I also shovel prunned my EBB TIDE. I was very dissapointed with how poorly this roses did for me. I even transplanted it last spring thinking a new location would fix it up but no luck. I had it in a really great spot too, right next to THE PRINCE and TAMORA in front of FALSTAFF. The heck with it, its history. I replaced it today with the DISNEYLAND that I also bought the other day.

I also played the Grim Reaper today. I have had it with Iceberg...4 years of weak growth. I also SP's Burgundy Iceberg...faded blooms, blows too quickly. We Salute You is also in the trash...didn't make it through the winter. My dear Papa Meilland is also history. I failed to winter protect enough. I will replace it...love the fragrance and blooms. Octoberfest didn't make it through winter. Aromatherapy was too puny after 3 years...gone.
I ordered a dozen own root Bucks and several more DA's. I planted Marmalade Skies. I have Sally Holmes (own root) and Enchanted Evening soaking, ready to go in tomorrow.

The only one to go for me is a climbing Iceberg too. Same thing as Artemis - about 4 years of waiting for something good to come from it - however I must be honest - it was a HD purchase so possibly it was just a weak plant to start with.

I am getting rid of a few of my knockouts just to make room for more interesting roses. Intrigue is on the list too, I have a tree rose intruige that is a one cane wonder, it looks bad compared to the other bushy full tree roses I have. The intruigue rose in the ground is not much better, it is still under a foot tall after being in the ground for over a year. It was a body bag purchase, so I didn't expect much. Europeana is coming close to being gone, in our cool and rainy spring it has become a PM magnet. I never have had powdery mildew before and the fungicides I am using don't seem to put a dent in it. Hopefully it will clear up with some warm weather.

Yes: Like other summer bloomers both are cut back early in the year. The butterfly bush starts into growth well before April, so that would be late. Each time you do it you prune a little farther out than the previous year. Study the growths and cut with more than one set of overwintering buds left from last season. Look at some illustrated pruning books to see what to do. Do not keep cutting back to the same point each time. The pestiferous one is B. davidii. I have also had one of its presumed hybrids (a local selection raised from seed of B. fallowiana but having B. davidii characteristics and resembling other such introductions) seed into a parking area near the original planting. Other kinds (BB. japonica, globosa etc.) being grown in this region have not shown this same propensity.

Hoob I'm glad you kept your Laguna. Yours is what inspired me to get mine! Jasmine4U...I love Sadie! Shes such a cutie..there's just something about cats and roses that makes me smile :) My grafted Love Song does not look healthy. It has many branches that died back and just a few green ones. There is a big main branch that keep dying back and the green ones are attached to the bottom of it so I don't know if its doomed yet. I'm not gonna sp it but it might commit suicide :/ Its in a pot I am debating putting it in the ground for a last ditch effort to save it. Its on Doc Huey and we have nematodes though..sigh.

Unless you say otherwise, I'm presuming that you want these to be single leader, straight trunked trees ...? And that when they're full grown, they'll be many tens of feet tall ... 50', 60', 70', etc....? And that they'll have a canopy whose bottom will clear the ground by at least 10' or more ...? If all that is true, then every branch that exists now will not exist in the finished tree. Relative to that, their only truly important function now is to capture sunlight to feed the main tree, especially the trunk and root system. Only the trunk and roots will exist and therefore, it is the important thing to focus on. A main thing to watch out for is the development of competing trunks that originate during the first several years of the tree's life. Any branch that has vigor and whose direction of growth becomes more vertical than 45*, poses a danger of becoming a competing trunk. I see such a branch in the first picture, coming off of the trunk toward the right, beginning lower down. (Some other pictures have similar situations.) This is nothing to fear or necessarily want to get rid of immediately, because it has a proper role for a while as one of the tree's food factories. But before it gets too large, it must go. If you adopt a general practice of removing the lower branches from a tree as it grows, whatever problems they could potentially bring would be gone as well, resolving the problem of having more than one trunk for example. (BTW, once you get within the adult tree canopy itself, I don't think it much matters that there are multiple trunks. They're not compromising the looks of the tree anyway.) A person can obsess about all kinds of details about plants & their maintenance, but what I find is that doing so tends to get in the way of maintaining trees at all. People don't know when "the best time" to prune them is, so they figure that NEVER is super safe time! In a very general sense, I like to prune woody plants (trees and shrubs) in late winter/early spring BEFORE the new spring growth occurs. But that time could really be extended to anytime in the fall after the plant has gone dormant, which is a huge window of pruning opportunity. Most people don't want to prune in the winter because they think it's not the best look and it's not going to be cured until the plant grows again. If pruned in early spring, the growth happens right afterward and fixes everything. There are some big advantages to pruning in the winter: it's not too hot ... and it can be an unhurried time when there are not other yard chores demanding attention. [Here, I must mention that there are two main divisions of bloom when it comes to woody plants: those that bloom on new wood (current year's growth) and those that bloom on old (last year's growth.) Don't prune plants that bloom on old wood after they've set bed (which is often not long after they bloom.) If you prune them in fall, winter or early spring, you'll be cutting off all their flowers for the current year. Plants that bloom on new wood are more forgiving and pruning anytime from fall to spring usually works ... but just once per year. If you don't care about the flowers of a tree or shrub you can prune anytime. Another thing, the main reason the annual pruning of most woody plants occurs sometime during dormancy is because the spring flush of growth will be forced to put all of its oomph into whatever of the plant remains. If one waited until after the flush of growth, and then pruned a lot of the plant away, they're only going to get a smaller portion of it back. Back to pruning off lower branches, my rule of thumb is to remove all branches that emanate below the middle of the tree's total height ... the lower 50%. That leaves you with half the tree looking normal and half of it is trunk. What happens right afterward is that the tree grows taller and branches more. Within a couple of months of branches being only at the top 50% of the tree turns into them being in the top 60% or even more. If It's a good year, and the tree has water and fertilizer, it could easily be back to a ratio of 70/30 by season's end. The net effect is massaging the tree into upward growth, while inadvertently fixing branching errors along the way.

You guys are too funny with all your shovel pruning. I bought a couple the other day at HD but they were potted in dirt and very, very healthy. I hope they stay healthy. I have several body bags this year I hope do good. I wish I would have kept up with which ones were body bags so I would know how they did and if I needed to not get anymore. Hey the burgundy iceberg does much better inside in a vase instead of out on the plant. As soon as they start to bud open I cut it and bring them in. Judy

I have an HD body bag Iceberg too. This year I put up wire and stretched the canes out horizontally and I'm getting a lot more growth which hopefully will bloom.

It is a BS magnet and must be sprayed. Also I think mine may be virused, but it's been ok so far.

In general..only one year is way too soon to shovel prune for me..I've had several that really come into their own after 2 or 3 years. I just won't give up until I am sure it's a poor performer. I give all of mine at least 3 years. Each to his own! Donna

Life is short. Get the shovel. Once I move to the acreage I have in mind, I can afford to be patient as I will have massive acres to play with. Not so much here. Enjoy the heady power of playing rose emperor and deciding who goes.

You guys are so helpful. I wait until a rose has been around for years and then I break down and buy from the best supplier I know of. In the 6 years I've grown own-roots in the south I've shovel-pruned two-- both bad plants, one was replaced because I told Chamblees right away, the other not because I waited too long. In the 30 years I grew grafted roses (from what is now Palatine's mostly) I SP'd two-- both too tender for my climate. I take forever to decide on a rose-- and pay top dollar-- maybe I just have trouble admitting my mistakes??? But really even roses that are different than what I expected-- like Night Owl, the only new intro I've ever bought-- I'm able to love for what they ARE. YMMV! (Barbara, from 200 roses to 20, from 1978 to 2008!)

Well, I have a small garden, in which I have crammed as many roses as I can, plus a few in pots. Happily, my limping-along Just Joey seems to have died (thanks to this forum, I learned JJ is better in the West, not my humid climate) so I can now replace with the golden oldie Oklahoma. Also the disappointing purple Intrigue, that never did much and is now deceased. On the plus side, my brutally summer-transplanted Eglantyne was morphing out octopus canes already! and had to be whacked back, and also thanks to some wonderful pictures on this forum I am trying "Heaven on Earth" this year and hoping mine will be as nice as the pictures I have seen.

my purple tiger died so that is gone. You must have gotten a bad dd..mine is getting ready to bloom already and it was new last year too. I have 2 ebb tide too that I would never think of sp'ing. My iceberg is a tree rose and that has been in bloom for weeks already.

I am keeping an eye on my scent from above. It has a bad rep for few blooms...if so it is gone by the fall.

I sent my Scent from Above to rose heaven two weeks ago. After four years, and lots of good food, I thought I deserved more than one stingy bloom every once in a while.

Gosh, you guys are making me feel better! LOL! I have been thinking of "shovel-pruning" at least one of my two Zephies. I didn;t get ONE bloom last year, although, to be fair, it was first season post-planting. I will give them a fighting chance, but I am a little trigger happy!

BTW, when I saw "shovel-prune" I immediately thought of "root-pruning..." you know, prior to transplanting an established plant? I was excited to read about that, becasue I think I should root-prune what appears to be a "Rose de Rescht' prior to moving to a much more favorable location.

Thanks for the laughs, and in the obsession thread. I am beginning to feel your pain, lol!

My DD has done very well the three years I have had it. I wouldn't dream of SP'ing it.
I have Perfect Moment, Cajun Moon, Madeline, Laura Bush, Chicago Peace,and Ronald Reagan on life support however as they didn't winter very well. So, they may end up getting SP'd. I will probably replace all four when all is said and done. I especially and hoping that RR perks up and thrives as I really like that one. Big and beautiful blooms on it all year long last year.
Time will tell, but I am not the most patient of rosarians.
If a rose doesn't perform in the garden I will replace it in a wink of an eye. There are way too many good roses out there available and in my pot ghetto just looking for a spot in the garden to show their stuff.
