I'd say it's green even though it looks brown, though the fact that it's dormant might make it less green than if it's not.

Of course, the only reason you ask is so that you can keep your ratio of greens to brown "correct". Unless you like to tinker and tweak to get a perfect mix (which seems like a lot of work for something that's been happening for all of time without our help), then the best approach, IMHO, is to toss it all in a pile, water, feed regularly with anything that isn't meat, bone, or fat, and wait. Turn occasionally when you feel the need for exercise and marvel as your pile shrinks on a daily basis, hopefully steaming hot too.

BTW, stinky compost is easy to fix, lots of browns. I use shredded newspaper. IALBTC

A compost pile needs vegetable fiber, some air, some moisture, and some nitrogen. Since cellulose contains a lot of carbon, and plant fiber is mostly cellulose, I generally think of these as browns. Our pile is mostly shredded maple leaves, and it rarely gets warm, much less hot. But it still makes good compost, eventually. Since a bigger pile holds more heat than a small one, it will generally get warmer, and that accelerates the composting process. If you need as much compost as you can get, as soon as possible, then you will likely need to find a source of nitrogen.

If you cut it green and dried it, it's still a green, even though it's brown in color. If it turned brown before you cut it, it's a brown.

It's sort of like the difference between hay and straw. Hay is harvested while the plant is green and then dried to provide food for the winter. Straw is cut after the grain is harvested and the plant has gone dry and is used for bedding because it doesn't have enough protein to be used as feed.

If you cut the Bermuda while it's green, then dry it until it's brown, it's a green. If you let it go dormant and turn brown, then cut it, it's a brown.

I just hope that stuff is good and dead. I got Bermuda around my compost bin from bringing in curbside bags of grass clippings, I think. It's all in my garden beds now, impossible to kill it off. I can only try to contain it.

Thank you all so much for answering! I really appreciate your responses. I guess I'll consider it as a brown. Should I not use Bermuda grass clippings if it may root in my garden when I use it as compost? This will be my first batch of compost. I doubt I'll be able to get it right with it being real hot or the right temperature and all. Has anyone else used Bermuda grass clippings in their compost and had problems with them growing in their garden?

I have never composted bermuda grass, but I have composted dandelion root, and crabgrass, successfully. It takes a long time in the pile, a year or more, to be certain that all of the seeds have been made not-viable.

Oh, that really stinks. I have a bunch of the clippings. I don't know what I'll do with it besides throw it in the woods maybe.

I have composted bermuda grass in all stages - green, dormant, seeding, roots, etc. Never had a problem with it invading my garden. Sometimes my compost piles are hot, sometimes not. I can't guarantee the same results for you, but I hate to see you throw out good compost material without giving it a try....

I had a dump pile that the landscapers and previous owners and then ourselves dumped into. It’s been sitting there for years. It’s turned into soil or compost but I had to clean out ivy roots that grew through it and it seems very dry can I still use this as a compost also our grass is full of weeds right now so when i cut it it’s not all green either some of the grass clippings are brown due to stress. In the fall we are reseeding. When we moved in house had been empty for five years. Anyway I’m trying to get it looking darker and richer how can I do this. Also the pile is very large. I did use some of it in a garden bed i weeded. Just trying to figure out if I can get it richer. This year I’ve been adding kitchen scraps and turning it. I’m in some 6.
