Training roses up a trellis, complete beginner

I am a renter and in our front yard there is a existing rose plant. It has two long stems that stick out horizontally (the ends touch the ground) in opposite directions, as well as two smaller new ones that point up. I want to train them up a narrow trellis because one of them is over the sidewalk and the other gets caught under the garage door constantly. One problem is that the base of the plant is about a foot and a half from the wall that I have to lean the trellis against, so I stuck the base of the trellis in at the half way point and leaned it against the wall. The other problem is that one of the stems leans in the complete opposite direction, and although I can easily tie it to the trellis, it does look very awkward. Will this eventually grow in the direction I want?

I am a complete beginner at gardening, although I am trying very hard to learn. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!
