Transplanted Crabapple Today (what did she just say??? lol)

My friend had sewer work done three days ago and they decided his Malus Coralburst was in the way so they dug it out w/ the backhoe. It was just laying in his front yard.

With all of the drama going on in his yard he was going to just have them haul it away. (insert sound of me screaming "nooooooo!!!").

so...yesterday I drove over, somehow got it bagged and in the back of my SUV and drove it home. Miracle of all miracles, we went from temps in the 20s to temps of 35 wednesday....45 yesterday and 60 today! The ground thawed beautifully for me to dig a whole and plop that bad boy in there.

The tree is about 6' tall and had roots that were chopped that were around 1.5-2 inches in diameter. There was still a fair sized root ball intact but there was definitely major chopping that went on in the root zone.

It laid out on his lawn for a day w/ no coverage but it was cool outside.

obviously the tree was fully dormant but that's a lot of trauma and it's the end of december...any chance it will make it? advice?

Assuming you planted and mulched it correctly, I'd place my bet for it surviving.

Dug a hole almost wide enough for a VW - lol - and set it to the same height as the pre-existing location (a little higher for settling). Watered and am going to mulch today.

Now I just stalk it until Spring.....

thanks for placing your bets, Brandon. I know it doesn't change its fate but it makes me feel better. :D

Thanks for starting this. It also drives me nuts when people write loose for lose, or the other way around. Also the misuse of I and me. My former boss did that all the time. In fact, she even "corrected" me when I wrote it correctly. Maybe I should say she corrected I. Hah. How about "I could care less" when the correct phrase is "I couldn't care less". If you say I could care less, you are saying that you DO care, since it is possible for you to care less than you do. If you say I couldn't care less, you are saying it is not possible for you to care less than you do now. In other words, you don't care. Is that as clear as mud?

no, I'm not interested in the classes, either. I just want to see what's available for the bits and pieces of glass, so I can piece together a GOG.... I have a number of windows that I've been guarding for a greenhouse and I think the time has come that I can safely say that it isn't going to happen. but the plants that I have, have wintered over for the past number of years, without croaking, so I guess I don't need the greenhouse as much as I need to mosaic..lol I have mostly hearty plants..hosta, geraniums, tree babies, grasses, lung wort, daylilies and others that don't seem to need protection. the windows are from sales and they just look like they want attention..lol I have glass cutters and have watched a number of the 'crafters coast to coast' and others on HGTV, so it's not completely foreign to me. and seeing all that's been posted here...I just gotta do it! I finally made a work area in the front room this weekend. I'd been putting it off and going bonkers, wanting to work on a vase. oh, and by the way...I got lots of circuit boards and old dead hard drives from a computer store and after all of that...I decided it would look just too junkie/techie for my liking. so now I have all the junk and don't want to glue it all on the monitor after all...lol I could decoupage it with crazy fabrics....that's much softer and less prickly...those danged boards kept sticking me, while I loaded them in the car! or really, I think I'll get a flat screen monitor and just give the boat anchor to someone else...I got it on freecycle, so it could go back there.. anyway...now that the little table is set up, I will be able to stack some milk crates up, to hold a lot of what is in boxes.... I've been working on a vase today and have it almost half cemented...it's a curved design, like the frying pan...no moss though..lol gotta get the momentum up for the vases... thanks for the encouragement..it makes my days much brighter. Mattie I have no clue what bm has done with her past dogs and cats she gets everytime her and her bf get their own place. I do feel sorry for those pets though. I almost think that people should go through some kind of adoption process when getting a pet! Too many people do not have stable living situations or the money to properly take care of pets but they get them anyways. Then they ruin that pets life just like you said. LH the kids don't know what to think about the party. Older sd just rolls her eyes at bm's promises, middle sd has times where she does the same and other times she gets excited and then let down. SS is going through the believe all bm says and then get let down phase. It is sad to see, but we can't shelter them from it all unfortunately. The welfare system makes me so mad! I really think that if you need welfare then you should have some guidelines to follow such as: -no pets -no brand new vehicles -monthly drug testing -a time limit on being on welfare It really makes me mad when I see people on welfare walking around in their brand name clothes, with their highlighted hair and carrying Coach purses. I just want to grab their link card out of their hand and tell them they could pay for their groceries if they stopped spending their money on the extras in life. Sometimes I wish I could just sit outside bm's places as she moves and leaves behind all kinds of new items they can't bring with them. Moving from state to state all the time I know they don't bring everything with. Such a waste!

presuming it was otherwise healthy ...

i give it a 95% chance of success ...

was it pretty cloudy while it sat on the ground.. no intense sun .. that would help ... humidity very high with the cold and melting snow??? etc ...

i just dont see a downside with a totally dormant tree ...

now if it were august.. i would give you 5% success rate ...

you had nothing to lose, but some good exercise...

what will be .. will be ...

dont water it into an ice cube when the ground refreezes .. but start watering as soon as the soil needs it in spring.. insert finger ..

it was super healthy to begin with.

it was fully cloudy but there is a chance that it was in the cold-cold for a day w/ no major humidity b/c it wasn't melting yet...but it was on its way.

i watered the dogmess out of it yesterday and it rained like crazy last night. we are moving back into a freeze so i thought i'd just mulch it today and say "see ya" until spring.

I accidentally uprooted a fairly large tree peony in december a couple of years ago with my snowplow. It came up with a decent amount of root but not much soil on the roots. I planted it back. I was sure it would be a goner, but in the spring it budded out at normal.

It will probably be ok.

Stake as well. With any missing roots it will sway a bit lessening chances of survival. And before the ground freezes...

I would trim back the branches as there won't be enuff roots left to feed all of them. A good pruning has never hurt a tree.

TOTALLY UNTRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This would be one of the worst things you could possibly do! Robbing the tree of stored food and making it cover over those wounds instead of growing roots is a horrible idea. This old idea/practice has been completely debunked and long ago shown to be detrimental to the health and establishment of newly planted trees. Beegood, there are countless references, that describe why this is a bad idea, scattered throughout newer text books, internet material, and here in this forum.
