Peggy Martin in Container?

I had hoped to put my Peggy Martin in a large container because the utility lines pass under the area that I want to use. The guy at Antique Rose Emporium said that climbers wouldn't be happy.

Anybody have any other experience?

I'm in Zone 9 in Texas and I am growing Peggy Martin in a 20" pot. I'm pretty sure the rose broke through the bottom of the pot because now she has giant canes that are easily over 12 ft tall.

I bought two last year and planted one and the other sat in a 5 gallon pot. Irritatingly, the one in the pot always looked better! With that said, it made a giant sprawling thing - not a particularly attractive potted shape. I planted the potted one this year when I finally had a spot.

I have several Peggy Martins in Zone 5b, central Illinois. They have done well over winter even with temperatures dipping below zero. I don't have to trim much dead wood. I planted the first ones in summer 2019 and in just three years, some have grown to 15 feet covering a massive amount of height and space. I even did cuttings and they sprouted and grew. I ordered more this year and will line all my fence with them. I will post several pictures

OK, I may have to start from scratch on this one; meaning I may have to purchase a new rose for this spot. This picture was taken spring before last and you can see that LB makes a wonderful display, but the show is much too short and the space it takes is far too great. The area in front of the wrought iron fence is a flower bed that now contains several roses and many daylilies (my current passion) and behind the fence is lawn. The canes reaching out to the lawn are well disliked by DH as he has to keep skirting them all year long. I tied most of the canes this last year, but there were so many canes competing for space that the flowers were not displayed as beautifully as when the canes were "free". Is Crepescule less vigorous than Rev D'Or or Peggy? What about thorns? This bed is at the end of our driveway (100 feet long DW) and it is highly visible, so I want a real show-off. What a wonderful (and timely) post this is! Such inspiring photos and ideas shared above. The Peggy Martin rose is a stunner–and only has prickles during her youngest years, interestingly. I have a young one heading up to a second-floor balcony, and hope that she will mature to the degree of loveliness pictured in this thread. Having heard that a friend growing a similarly young Peggy Martin in zone 6a discovered brown canes (and no sign of spring growth as of yet), there has been concern about winter frost damage, can anyone kindly advise as to spring behavior for zone 6? I have suggested morning Superthrive–the breakfast of champions!–but I too have become curious and concerned about Peggy's apparent struggle there. Many thanks in advance for any guidance and/or assurances offered.

justkristyj I love your propagating bench! I've recently started trying to propogate roses from cuttings because I noticed a beautiful bush blooming in my community garden and had to have it. I immediately came to this forum and now have 3 potted cuttings with new leaves sprouting on them. I'm addicted... I too wonder why not everyone is running around taking cuttings and rooting roses, lol. To be honest, I've not been interested in roses until recently and the fragrance is more important to me then the color or shape. The rose I took cuttings from is a very subtle cream/very light peach color but the fragrance is divine.

You can grow ANY rose in a container -- providing the container is large enough.
BUT -- HOW LARGE IS "LARGE ENOUGH"?

We had 5 Tea Roses in containers on our patio. The containers were approximately the size of a 30-G Trash Can. After 5 years, we transferred all of the roses to spots in the ground, and they immediately doubled in size -- indicating clearly that the containers had held them back from reaching mature size.

I would say, if it is impossible to plant in the ground in that location, you'd be best-served by planting your Peggy Martin rose in a different location.

I can't for the life of me believe that this hard climber couldn't be pampered properly in a large container.

First, I am not sure I'd care about the utility lines.
Is your concern that some day you might have to dig up the lines?

Second, you can grow any rose in a container. It will not be as happy as in the ground (provided your ground has good soil and drainage). As mentioned, it will grow quite a bit smaller. I am not sure if that's a problem for you or not.

I am growing "Climbing Royal Sunset in what is probably a 15 gallon pot. This particular climber tends to get about 15 feet tall, which is moderate in size. (As compared to a large rose like Cecile Brunner which grows to 30 feet or more.) It is now 7 years old and it is about 8 feet tall. It is clearly much smaller than it would be had it been in the ground. On the other hand, it is healthy, blooms well, and I enjoy having it. I have it climbing on a trellis I mounted in the pot.

I got the idea from a local nursery which is growing a few climbers in large whiskey barrels for display on their asphalt growing area. They are probably 15 feet tall and look fabulous, so it clearly can be done. It just depends on what your expectations are.
